20 years ago today, Dale took ‘em to school one last time. A masterful display of driving on the restrictor plate tracks he despised so much, but that last push from Kenny Wallace was what he truly needed. To think he would be gone four months later is haunting, but he went out doing what he loved the most. May you RIP, Dale...
I was there, by complete accident driving back to school and got 2 tickets from a guy at a gas station. Best race I ever saw and I lived in Daytona Beach. My buddy who was with me hated Dale and Chevy. The laughter I had to hear when Dale was down to almost 20th place with 10 to go. With 3 to go my buddy just couldn’t believe it. To this day he still can’t believe it. Greatest race I’ve ever seen, live or on tv.
I've never prided myself as an Earnhardt fan but that was the greatest display of driving I've ever seen. I remember that race like it was yesterday. He owed a big thanks to Kenny Wallace for the push.

Clean, fun, and really, really exciting without any of the wreck-wreck-wreck, and manufactured drama of a green-white-checker. I can't say I miss the current iteration of NASCAR. I do miss this stuff.
This must've been the tenth time I watched this race and it's actually more insane. Literally the second the Intimidator makes the big move, someone hits the grass! Not to mention, the front row was basically single file until the lap the Intimidator starts pushing. Then it's like three wide on the front! WOW what a move that was!
@TOPFUEL 173 What driver has won every single race and finished second in the standings? In 2003, under the old system, Newman had 8 wins and finished 6th in points. Kenseth had 1 win and won the championship.
@TOPFUEL 173 You brought up wins and finishing 2nd in the standings. Newman won 8 races and finished 6th. You can't have it both ways. I miss this NASCAR so much. I remember as a kid those summer nights with the fan blowing in the trailer we lived in.. watching these races. I was a Matt Kenseth fan from day one and still am but Mr. Restricter Plate will always be a big memory for me. Too bad modern NASCAR is watered down and geared so that those with the most money can win the most races..
Dude that's how its always been. How do you think Richard Petty won 200 races? He had the most money, therefore had the best equipment. He was talented, yes, but even the most talented drivers cant win in sub-par equipment (See Jimmie Johnson in his NNS years)
Yeah Petty had all that, plus he raced in eras where there were 40, 50, even 60-races a season. No contest, Petty is King. Had Earnhardt raced then, he may have won more.... He still won as many championships as Petty.
But even though Petty got a good chunk of those wins by racing more than once a week in the early days, well, it's just more work he and his men had to do. And they got it done. He didn't have it any easier. Jimmie Johnson, now that's another story. No way in hell to compare him to Petty and Earnhardt except for number of Cup Titles. I knew he'd win #7 eventually (Booooooo), i believe Nascar is somewhat rigged nowadays anyway, no way all that could have happened and he wins from starting dead last.......
I was born on February 19, 2001. The earliest NASCAR race I can remember was the 2006 Daytona 500 when Jimmie Johnson won. Unfortunately, i never got to experience these days in NASCAR. I'm pretty pissed at what Brian France is doing. He's trying to make NASCAR into football with the b.s. Caution clock and the stupid chase format in all the series. I really wish I could've seen Dale Earnhardt race, and watch some 90's NASCAR, because it seems like it was a lot of fun. Now adays we have people that take the lead and lead +300 laps, and you never see something like this. Man. What I wouldn't give to go back and watch tins race.
I think you'd like the races from the 80s. Lots of them are here on UA-cam. They have Earnhardt and Waltrip and Wallace (and occasionally Pearson and Yarborough) with Ned Jarrett and Benny Parsons announcing and very few cautions. There's nothing like it anymore.
I often got a kick out of all the driver's that said racing at Daytona or Talladega was not really racing since the restrictor plate always seemed to play a part and that it was all about the car and not the driver. So there is 6 laps to go and Dale is in the 2nd pack of cars and is able to make it through (with drafting help) to take the lead on the final lap. IMO that was ALL driver and there was nobody better at those 2 tracks than Earnhardt. He along with Jr. and Buddy Baker knew how to use the draft and how the airflow in and around the cars to work to their advantage. Why other driver's couldn't figure that out was a testament to how great Dale was.
Earnhardt may have had help from Kenny, but the Intimidator in that black #3 was the one who made the moves to get to the front and win. He could see the air, coupled with his driving style is what made him a 10-time winner at Talladega. If you just gave Dale Sr. a steering wheel, he could do anything!
They need to add those things back to the top of the cars, back from this race to 2003 were probably the best plate races ever. Lots of lead changes, passes, not "5 real passes a race, rest are during pit cycles." Wonder why they removed them?
The drivers complained about the crazy closure rate. But the cot created similar drafting and i agree I think they should bring this package back. The cars don't draft and pass very well right now.
