    Hi all, I have done a very similar setup on my CNC using the RNR USB breakout board,
    i also use a spindle.
    My setup uses the Spindle output Clockwise "M3" for the Spindle and spindle Anticlockwise "M4"for the laser, as well as the PWM for the Speed \ Intensity.
    I have also created a custom Vectric Post process to use M3 for all my spindle work, as the spindle I use only works in clockwise operation,
    and M4 to switch the laser on and off.
    I have had great success using this method so far,
    Nice job and keep the videos coming .

      Thank you for sharing! I still have to get the laser out of the basement to the garage where the CNC is located. I just bought a metal lathe so that took priority right now. Canada is wonderful in the summer so lots of out door activities. Winter is cold so that is when most of my electronics/programming/cnc work is done. I will give your ideas a try when "I get around to it"!

      I tried many Post processes from other 3rd parties outlets, keeping in mind there are other types of break-out boards that are not compatible with the RNR, none the less Have fun while the sun is out, if you run into a snag regarding the post-processor please feel free to give me shout, I'm happy to share, I also have my wiring diagram also available. 🍻

    Steve, were you able to finish the laser assembly? I would like to know how the final work turned out and if it would be possible to provide us with the wiring diagrams. I believe that many are having difficulties in getting the laser to operate properly with the RNR Motion Control. Have a nice week!

    man I coulda used this video a month ago lol. I tried looking everywhere for how to connect my laser to my new mach3 cnc after using grbl forever debating if i should go back to grbl but not wanting to lose the proper 4 axis control of mach3 and ended up building a motion rig for the laser based off grbl and keeping my cnc mach3. thanks for this now i can simplify things. Also what software will you be running it with for making the laser gcode?

      Hi KatMan Dude, thanks for watching the video! Some things look easy (and are) some things look easy (and are not!). It sounds easy to grab a bunch of items, interconnect and away you go....the lack of documentation makes this difficult and time consuming. I am going to attempt to use vectric aspire. It will need a new postprocessor for laser use. When I get around to hooking it up to the CNC I will create a video to document the process. I like making these videos as it refreshes my memory. Sometimes when I do not do or use something for a while, I kinda forget how it was done....these videos are helpful to remind me!

    Excellent job! What Post Processor did you use? I tried several times and the laser is always turn on. Did you use an external relay to turn the laser on and off when cutting? If possible, could you show us the connections on the USBCNC board? So people will fully understand your wonderful work.

      Hi Washington, thanks for the kind words! I will be using vectric aspire for the designs and I found a post processor for laser that I will likely use. I am going to use an external relay to turn the laser power on/off, and the PWM signal to control the intensity (mach3 will think it is the spindle speed). I am trying to find time to tear down the CNC control box so I can add the connections for the laser and finally install the laser on the machine. Hopefully I will get to it this weekend and I will make a video of the process. I will make up a diagram showing the relays etc to help others out :-) Too many toys, not enough time!

      @@nix12m I would think the intensity would be with M3. Wikipedia: The speed of the spindle is determined by the address S, in either revolutions per minute (G97 mode; default) or surface feet per minute or [surface] meters per minute (G96 mode [CSS] under either G20 or G21). The right-hand rule can be used to determine which direction is clockwise and which direction is counter-clockwise.

The grounds are also connected together (ACM on the board, and GND on the 12V power supply). The AVI on the board goes to the PWM pin on the S9 connector. I hope this helps clarify things! Wiring
    The wiring connections are marked ACM, AVI and 10v, this is commonly used on VFD's
    ACM = Analog common ( ground )
    AVI = Analog Variable
    10v = Reference voltage
    this used on an external potentiometer or PLC for VFD's ...
    In closing, the 10v ( reference voltage ) could be anything from 5v to24v ,
    DO NOT CONNECT THE ANALOG GROUND TO DIGITAL GROUND
    as it will create ground loop and create endless problems.

    I intend to use Sculpfun S9 Laser Engraver Module 90W with CNC Shield V3.0 Expansion Board With Arduino Uno. CNC Shield V3.0 has 3.3v on pwm output. I wonder if the output is strong enough or if the pwm voltage needs to be increased to 12V.
    Thanks for the video..

    • @stevesfascinations1516
      @stevesfascinations1516  Рік тому

      Hi Martin Matjasic, the laser needs 12V, I am not familiar with the CNC Shield, but if it puts out 3.3V, you may want to use that voltage to trigger a FET to switch the 12VDC to the laser.

    Hello, thank you for the video. Few things i do not understand:
    1. Normaly laser frequency is around 1Khz, why did u set 5 in the PWM Base Frequency in Mach3? Souldnt you have put e.g. 1000?
    2. At a certain point you mentioned that having 12V on AVI would allow to have higher laser power but my understanding is that power is drawn from VCC so 12/24V and it has nothing to do with the PWM Voltage but only with the PWM duty cycle.
    How is it that CNC board, did you ahve any issue with lasers?
    Regards,

      Hi Massimiliano Gilli, thanks for watching the video! I am pretty new to lasers. I have experimented with laser diodes with various power levels. I have made PWM controllers and power supplies for them. I was not aware that the freq is supposed to be 1KHz - thanks for letting me know! The PWM allows you to vary the power to the laser by chopping the DC power into pulses. If you increase the voltage you will get more power out of the diode. The diode is rated to 12VDC so that is what I used. I did not think it would be a problem for the control card and I was correct, it works fine.

    • @massimilianogilli1164
      @massimilianogilli1164 Рік тому

      @@stevesfascinations1516 My point is that Pulses are between 0 and VCC (either 12V or 24V) and not really related to PWM voltage. The PWM can be either TTL (5V) or 12V and what matters is the duty cycle. But i guess we are on the same page. What about the breakout board is it good?

    Shouldn't ACM be -12VDC instead of +12VDC since it is a ground negative common pin? DCM should also be marked with a - 24 volt Negative sign

      Sounds like a defective laser or you are changing the pwm over time. I believe the spindle speed can modify the intensity, check to make sure your code does not change the spindle speed in the area that is causing you trouble.

      Hola Jose! Thank you for watching the video. Turning it on is easy, controlling the power is the tricky part. To turn on, simply connect the VCC (Positive DC Power) to the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) pins together and then power them both up. It will then be ON at 100%. You can do this either with a relay or a switch. I hope this helps?
