The ice pick looks terrific, almost too nice to use. Really well done. A fun collaboration. Happy to have helped. You made the wood shine. The cold bluing on the cap was a good call. I always enjoy the history. Dave.
That was good of LV Woodturner to help you out Magdad, what a great community this is ! That little ice pick came out great, can't beat the holy trinity of brass, wood & steel, and once again the early American stain was spot on for a vintage tool !
Great Pokey Thing Restoration that came out very beautiful looking and the screw choice was spot on keeping it original looking ... Take care Mr 357magdad and also Mr Chuck nice to see him back in the shop ... I am always looking forward to next Sundays Video
Finding time to watch tool restoration videos (or make shop time) has been cut down to about once every 6/8 weeks! Great work, nice to see your still at it! Great work!
Very cool. That really turned out well. My parents had an ice pick virtually identical to this one. Growing up before self-defrosting freezers, as a chore I had to manually defrost the freezer from time to time and this was the tool of choice to remove sheets of accumulated ice. We also used it to chip ice from a large block of ice. It was much cheaper to buy a large block rather than cubed ice back in the day. Great video. It's appreciated.
Excellent job, like the lag screw conversion you did, the handle was well done, enhanced by the choice of the wood. Finished out great. Thanks for the video sir.
Very nice Magdad 👍🏻👍🏻 You didn’t have a lot to start with but it turned out awesome. I have a screwdriver just like that. I was surprised to see it was a ice pick. Thank You for sharing
I think I would have tried to repair the handle. If it wasn’t successful then I would have turned a new one. Yours turned out beautiful, nice restoration. Thank You
I would have liked to see an attempt at gluing the original handle back together. It looked like the pieces fit pretty well so it should have worked. I just love the character of old wood. It’s hard to beat.
Really nice result. Well done. I’m looking at a n accumulation of user metal files that could use some handles. Maybe time to fire up the wood lathe and the metal lathe. Great ideas in your video. Thanks.
Absolutely wonderful restoration. From trash to treasure. I agree completely with the decision to use a slotted screw on the end cap. Have you noticed that it's getting harder to get the slotted screws you want at the hardware store? Looks to me like the stores are pushing Phillips head fasteners. Great video as usual.
Fantastic job on the ice pick as always I have seen all your videos and have really enjoyed them. You have shown Jack several times and I would like to see his videos where would I find them
Thanks for watching Michael! Jack was a viewer who passed away. His wife sent me some of collection to work on and include in my charity auction. Jack did not have a UA-cam channel.
It looks absolutely beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of spalted honey locust. Do you know where that type of tree grows? The wood grain of that handle is top notch.
Hi, I have an old ice pick from local ice house in the 50’s. The handle is good still with the name, filters ice, phone # and Rensselaer, NY on the 4 sides of the handle. It’s missing that little metal collar. Where can I get one? I want to keep it. It reminds me of going to that ice house with my dad.
You can find similar ice picks at flea markets and antique stores. You could use the ferrule off one that is in worse shape. Another option is to find a section of copper pipe at the hardware store that fits and make one.
Thanks Martin! In the old days, before every house had a refrigerator, ice was sold in large blocks. People store the block in ice boxes. An ice pick was used to break smaller pieces off of the block. Also, early refrigerators did not have auto defrost, many folks used ice picks to chip the accumulated frost out of their freezers.
I’d there any kind of file that could file between lettering like on that butt cap? I s see m picturing something like a slotted screwdriver shaped as a file on the tip and also picturing something like a split tipped flathead screwdriver that holds strips of sandpaper or abrasive if you wanted to crisp up the lettering. I just never heard of such tools outside of a dentist office
Thanks! It was a fun collaboration project! I've since gotten my own "lathe". Check out my tiny lathe playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL2LUCgmdqpXO1J5MYEHZJ4rjVGHGIgbad.html

“Assorted wire flinging dremel bits”. 😂😂
No truer words……
The worst part is when one of those tiny wires ends up in Mrs Magdad's foot!
A very professional looking “pokey thing”…..I love it! She never looked that good when new!
Thanks John! It is definitely "better than need be"!
Now that's a cool ice pick.
Thanks Larry!
That flat tip screw you made is 1000% the right way to go. Great video.
Thanks! I'm glad you like it!
Who would've thought that an ice pick could turn out so nice?!
The wood Dave chose transformed it into something special!

Your friendly wood turner did an excellent replication. This turned out so cool. This right up there with all the excellent things you do.
Thanks Gayle! It was a fun collaboration!
GLORIOUS! LV, Chuck and yourself deserve a big congrats for putting Gilchrist back on the map!
Thanks Keith! It was a fun project!
You’ve elevated that tool to a piece of art. Magnificent job mate.
Thanks! It is pretty now!
@@357magdad now I thought Americans pronounced it “Purdy”. 😂
@@shedmanx3640 My buddy Big Vic would probably say purdy!

I think the wood Dave chose has plenty of character!
Beautiful grain pattern and nice blueing 👍🏻🛠️

Love seeing different wood varieties. I tried arborvitae once. Thanks
Thanks Tony! I would have made it out of cherry...again!
You are an artist, stuck in creativity like others like Chuky

Thanks Mike! Pokey things are fun!
That wood replacement handle turned out great. The metal cap looks terrific, also.

A + for the homemade slotted screw the end does look better with the bluing on it

Holy Wow Batman! That looks so good!

I have a decent collection of slotted screws from my grandfather. Almost threw them away. Even have square he’d lag screws.
Hold on to that vintage hardware!
That screw turned out great!!
Thanks! I bought two just in case I didn't get the slot centered on the first try, but I nailed it!
@@357magdad Sure did!
It looks absolutely beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of spalted honey locust. Do you know where that type of tree grows? The wood grain of that handle is top notch.
I think honey locust is pretty common. Usually grows near water. Spalting refers to the dark streaks caused by fungus.
What a nice restoration. Great.
Thank you!
Beautiful...Excellent job...Excellent...
Thanks Uncle Black!
What a coincidence, I just got a 8inch cabinet screwdriver. Wood, steel, and brass. Weekend
Steel, wood and brass is my favorite combination!

Great restoration!

Thanks Jerry! I don't have any special 357 mag brass.
Beautiful
Thanks!
Turned out absolutely stunning!
This might be a silly question, but what exactly was/is an ice pick used for?
Thanks Martin! In the old days, before every house had a refrigerator, ice was sold in large blocks. People store the block in ice boxes. An ice pick was used to break smaller pieces off of the block. Also, early refrigerators did not have auto defrost, many folks used ice picks to chip the accumulated frost out of their freezers.

Now if we can only find the recipe for ice!
Try time release water in your search.
I think even Chuck could make ice without a recipe!
I've heard of crushed ice, but a crushed ice pick?
It is amazing that the wood handle was damaged like that without bending the shaft!
Looks like a scratch all to me , a tool use to mark your work both metal and wood.
Pokey things are very versatile. Gilchrist definitely made this one for chipping ice. The metal butt cap is usually found on ice picks
