There's a pleasure in making things for yourself -- especially something unexpected. At TEDYouth 2012, William Gurstelle shows how to make your own speakers from objects probably already laying around your house, like copper wire and an empty yogurt cup.
Talk by William Gurstelle.
Marvelous! I just wanna give this guy a hug, if for nothing else then for the couple of kids he managed to wonder and inspired during the recording of this video.
The two end of the wire coil are just like the ends of the speaker wire you use to hook up store bought speakers. Just attach the ends of the wire coils to the output of the amplifier and you're good to go.
This guy is awsome, wish all physic teachers were like that. You just can't resist loving this. And he makes it nearly out of thin air.
you can hear that crisp clear sound
it gots that special crisp sound those audiophiles are always talking about.
This guy is an incredible teacher
"If music be the food of love, play on."
---William Shakespeare
It's videos like this one that make me so happy I am subscribed to TEDEd.
best Jeff Bridges impression ever...
I'm much more likely to keep a hand-made Christmas card than a lazy store-bought one. If something is made well, it is well loved.
Now, you truly know the evil behind the statement: "I'll take a patato chip...........and eat it!"
Wow, that chip really sounded... crisp...
you'd use a headphone jack, connect the two wires to the two wires on the coil.
It could also be a microphone.
It look like he connected the ipod to an amplifier and the amplifier to the two copper ends of his coil. It might work connecting a 3.5 mm cable directly to his copper coil but the voltage could be too low.
He did it through an amp with a 3.5mm to RCA cable.
I think the critical difference between 'magic' and 'magic show' is that you know the latter is a trick. 'Magic', you would bow down and worship.
He got me when he said "a four story high trebuchet"
I love making. I haven't been able to make much yet. But I absolutely love mechanics and whatnot. I agree. Also, 3d printers. Making a 3d printer. I highly recommend it. I want to invent. Thanks for the upload. (Also what he said about hot glue, it doesn't work well for metal. apoxy for that.)
I think this is also how Phillips makes their products *giggle*.
6:00 Thats what I call crisp sound
cool invention
That potato chip speaker sounds so.....*puts on glasses*...crisp.
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." -- Arthur C. Clarke
Feels like i'm watching a magic show or something :p
Nice!
I am going to make a speaker out of a Jägermeister lid now
That speaker was still better quality then beats by Dre.
HELL YEAH!!!! MAN MADE STUFF IS 1000% BETTER!!
haha what kind a kitchen was that super smart kitchen
xD
Man, I gotta buy one of those! xD
When I try to make something I usually end up covered in melted plastic, solder, glue and various other substances, with damaged parts lying in front of me and a hideous "thingie" that doesn't work. And then I go out and just buy something that looks great, works well and is cheap :)
never play with food.. unless your that guy..
never mind food can be amazing!
I am gonna make one

how to make a speaker
step 1 find a potato
Any one else reminded of Household Hacker's $1 speaker prank?
how do i make that huge box thing the speaker and ipod are plugged into? definitely don't have that in my kitchen
I've done this before with a styrofoam cup 'cause I couldn't afford speakers so I bought some 3 dollar magnets instead lol
I knew that much - where do you connect this cable?
Fucking brilliant.
LOL. Necessity isn't always the mother of invention....
Can anyone explain to me how he connects the speaker to the audio source? If I were to make this (and dammit, I'm GOING to make this) how do I plug it into my iPod? I notice he has what looks like a big amplifier as well.
You connect the 2 ends of the coil to a mono audio jack like a 3.5mm mini TRS. One end will be a positive and the other the ground. Plug it in and enjoy!
One side at the speakers, one at the ipad
An Idea from Portal 2 LOL
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! (CSI)
Potato chip speaker. I guess you could say the sound was really "crisp"
How did he plug in the ipad to the "speakers"?
with a cable
Next up - potato chip ion drive!
how do you connect the cables?
That is not the point.
The purpose of the talk is to encourage everyone to try to be inventive.
oh, you got a beats by dre? here, try my potatoe.
How'd he connect the coil to his ipod?
welcome to a musicians life. building stuff for shits and giggles. oh and mostly to make something work better or more efficiently.
Materials cost.
I hate you ow I mean I love you
didn't you learn anything?! make it!
Probably sounds better too. Beats suck, %90 paying for the brand.
I C WAT CHUUU DIDDD THURRRR
potato chip speaker,... i guess organic sound is healthy ;)
geez if speakers so easy to make why my cost 100$~! haha
kip kay
:P
ba dum tsss
Black guy @5:50
Why do humans need more useless stuff ?
it's not always about having the stuff, but the journey of making it
Because meanwhile you can discover something new and actually useful.
Things like microwave ovens weren't invented with specific intentions. It was a side-product of other stuff.
And also, modern economy is based on the fact that people buy useless shit like iPhones and RGB controlled wifi light bulbs.
