    There's a pleasure in making things for yourself -- especially something unexpected. At TEDYouth 2012, William Gurstelle shows how to make your own speakers from objects probably already laying around your house, like copper wire and an empty yogurt cup.

    Marvelous! I just wanna give this guy a hug, if for nothing else then for the couple of kids he managed to wonder and inspired during the recording of this video.

    The two end of the wire coil are just like the ends of the speaker wire you use to hook up store bought speakers. Just attach the ends of the wire coils to the output of the amplifier and you're good to go.

    I'm much more likely to keep a hand-made Christmas card than a lazy store-bought one. If something is made well, it is well loved.

    you'd use a headphone jack, connect the two wires to the two wires on the coil.
    It could also be a microphone.

    It look like he connected the ipod to an amplifier and the amplifier to the two copper ends of his coil. It might work connecting a 3.5 mm cable directly to his copper coil but the voltage could be too low.

  • @Gamez4eveR
    @Gamez4eveR 11 років тому

    He did it through an amp with a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

    I think the critical difference between 'magic' and 'magic show' is that you know the latter is a trick. 'Magic', you would bow down and worship.

    I love making. I haven't been able to make much yet. But I absolutely love mechanics and whatnot. I agree. Also, 3d printers. Making a 3d printer. I highly recommend it. I want to invent. Thanks for the upload. (Also what he said about hot glue, it doesn't work well for metal. apoxy for that.)

    When I try to make something I usually end up covered in melted plastic, solder, glue and various other substances, with damaged parts lying in front of me and a hideous "thingie" that doesn't work. And then I go out and just buy something that looks great, works well and is cheap :)

    Can anyone explain to me how he connects the speaker to the audio source? If I were to make this (and dammit, I'm GOING to make this) how do I plug it into my iPod? I notice he has what looks like a big amplifier as well.

    • @DJScopeSOFM
      @DJScopeSOFM 9 років тому +1

      You connect the 2 ends of the coil to a mono audio jack like a 3.5mm mini TRS. One end will be a positive and the other the ground. Plug it in and enjoy!

      Because meanwhile you can discover something new and actually useful.
      Things like microwave ovens weren't invented with specific intentions. It was a side-product of other stuff.
      And also, modern economy is based on the fact that people buy useless shit like iPhones and RGB controlled wifi light bulbs.
