The meaning of Schandjogen, which is written on the tattered flag carried to the cliff by the young man at the end of this film, is roughly “disgraced boys” from my research. From this I understand that the surviving lover is claiming the land in honor of his lost love.
Schandjongen is written to shame the surviving boy, the word 'gay' or homosexual did not exist yet. The deed of same-sex love was considered so disgraceful that as a punishment it was written on his cuffs (the flag). I think, to memorize his lover and as an early queer act he carries the flag with a certain pride.

However, not knowing either Dutch or German and curious about what was written on the flag I had to piece together the meaning of the word schandjogen, which I discovered is actually two words joined together. "schandjongen" is singular, thus it means "disgraced boy". Plural would be "schandjongens". By the way, one would rather say "schandknaap" in Middle Dutch. Yes, I am a native speaker of Dutch.
Nicely done. An important, but sad, chapter in LGBTQ history and typically, one that ends in tragedy. This is still a current story if we allow bigots and zealots to rule over us again, and frankly, we’re in danger of that happening in the US again, among other places.
The intensity of the senseless execution is shocking: Stonewall has a long history. The Greeks, esp the Spartans, might have had intense sex without punishment: this is taking S & M a bit too far. I do wonder why the brutality is justified?
The brutality was (and is sometimes still) justified by certain chapters in the bible. The story of Sodom & Gommorah, the name sodomites is from that book. In this story it is falsely believed that God punishes the men of Sodom and Gomorrah for having sexual intercourse with men, who at that time were guests of Abraham. The true explination is that the men of Sodom and Gomorroh disrespect the rules of hospitality and brutally try to rape the guests of Abraham. Abraham in return tries to calm the men by offering his own daughters to satisfy them. Christianity was (and is) an important lecture for sailors, especially during the hardships of the VOC-era. In this story, the bearded man with the crucifix, adressed as captain had a function as keeper of the law and minister.
I am not sure if it was intentional irony or not but it occurs to me that the younger brother still does not know how to tie a knot properly - at least not consistently properly with a heavy rock included. Sloppy work there for a seaman.
