  • Welcome back to Nick's Drum Lessons! This is my lesson on a Train Beat and a very cool "Thrash" embellishment of it. This groove is one that I love showing students with a ton of benefits. Takes a lot of dynamic control to get this grooving as well as a great introduction into 4 way coordination! You can see the PDF of the lesson at NicksDrumLessons.com. Enjoy!

Great video! I always thought this was a great groove, but didn't know how to play correctly or what it was called. Thank you🇨🇦🙂

Great lesson!! Hey, I’m curious about your sound device. What are you using to record or amplify?

At the time it was a Presonus mixer and Shure mic but didn't have anything enhancing it.

Great lesson! Your video auto played after another video. When I heard you and quickly saw you, I thought you were Stanton Moore! 😃. I'm trying to figure out the best in Radar Love. Some people say it's a shuffle, but it seems like a swung train beat. Any thoughts? Thanks for the lesson!

It's definitely a shuffle. Watch an early UA-cam that shows his hands (don't forget he's playing Left Handed! ) Many drummers can't play the shuffle with just the one hand going at that speed so we sort of fall back to the single beat train shuffle. That's why his sounds so good!

There are some other ways to play that train beat. Each one sounds different.
