    Hey, Mark, great lesson! Very well explained. My first exposure to this beat was as a kid back in the 1970's when The Sweet's drummer Mick Tucker used this beat with some different accents on "Ballroom Blitz", one of my all-time favorite songs to practice to. I can remember practicing this until my forearms started to ache. By the way, your snare sounds phenomenal!

    Thank you so much man, Country has a simple rhythm got it but people always underestimate it. Did this back in the 70's and was so easy back then, just went brain dead, thanks again.

      +Jimmie Nahas hi Jimmie. Totally agreed. The guys that do that stuff for a living in Nashville are extremely focused, and playing that feel is tough! thanks, ML

    Interesting video. I always do a train beat with the hi hat, to make a metallic chug-a-chug sound. The snare is an interesting option. Good video.

    Hi Great Lesson, Im a self taught drummer and This beat is more challenging then I thought. You break it down great. I guess it's a matter initially to practice slow with a metronome right? How do you increase your time each day? By 2 BPM every day? IE: 100, 102, 104, etc.. Should I practice 10 mins daily? THX for your help

    • @mletalien
      @mletalien  7 років тому +2

      Well, those are great questions. I would suggest working with a click, and practice the beat for five minutes without stopping. Trust me five minutes is a long time when you do it that way. I would not increase the BPM by more than five beats a day, and I would make sure that the beat "grooves" at all tempos. I am sure you know this, but faster doesn't always mean harder! Playing things slow and in the pocket can be difficult as well!

    The most frustrating part of my musical experience playing in bands for 30 years was how few drummers know how to do this! Every drummer on the planet has nailed the straight ahead 4/4 rock beat, and they think "i've got it. I'm good to go." Then you need them to play a train beat to cover "Liza Jane" or something similar and they try to bang out 8th notes on the high hat and just speed up their standard rock beat. It's stilted and horrible. And don't get me started on when you try to have these guys lay down a convincing funk groove. They feel compelled to play EVERY accent that's voiced by the horns and vocalists in the original recording. But drummers get bored and think MORE is the answer to everything.

    so by playing the train beat with brushes . just use the same pattern as you do with sticks.

      Hello and thanks for watching and the question! TBH I am not sure...although I have to say that I play that song A LOT with different bands and after hearing the original version a few weeks back for the first time in a while, I thought to myself "Man, we play that a lot faster than the original version!" :) Take care and sorry I couldn't answer your question!

    I struggle with this beat.. I really want to nail it but my time is a mess.. I play guitar and i love country chicken picking which i can pull some things off on guitar but i want to be able to lay this beat down on a recording so i can go back and practice my guitar over it and its just a mess. Ugh!! I will not give up!!

    Is the train used on ballroom blitz, or different sticking?

    • @mletalien
      @mletalien  9 років тому

      Lawrence Dimech The sticking would basically be the same (single strokes) , but what changes it, at least IMO, is the accent pattern. Thanks for watching!

      @@mletalien Is it the same as The Beatles - Get Back ?

    • @mletalien
      @mletalien  3 роки тому

      I would say very similar, but I haven't listened to "Get Back" in a while. I can tell you, like a lot of Ringo's stuff, it is a lot more difficult to play right then it sounds! Hope you are well and thanks for commenting!
