- I honestly wasn't really sure if I'd like this movie since I don't know a lot about cars or racing, but WHAT A RIDE! Ford v Ferrari was an amazing mix of top-notch acting, incredible camera angles, sound, and solid humor - all against the backdrop of a great true story. I loved it.

I can't even fully explain why, but "You're not Henry Ford, you're Henry Ford the Second." is one of the most savage and devastating insults I've ever heard in film lol
Yes!! It’s funny you say that because of all the great lines in this movie, that is definitely one that I thought about afterwards.
"You're not the original, you're a second-rate copy."
9:53... "A week at Disney World with your family." 😅🤣😂😅🤣😂
IYKYK lol
I went into this film not expecting much as I’m not exactly a fan of cars or racing. By the end I was bawling my eyes out and it’s still one of my faves. Great reaction 😊 x
Yes!!! That's exactly how I felt. I really didn't think I'd enjoy this nearly as much as I did. Thank you so much :)
In answer to your wondering...the first car race was probably the Paris-Rouen Motor Race in 1894, the first running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was in 1923...the earliest running of a "stock car" race on Daytona Beach was in 1936 and by 1948 NASCAR had been founded. Each type of auto racing...drag racing, touring car racing, rallying, Grand Prix, etc... has its own history, but those are the ones that are most relevant to the movie and your comments.
Also, as usual with any movie involving actual history, you should absolutely check out the article on History vs Hollywood. This movie is amazing, but obviously does take liberties with the real history of events.
Thank you SO MUCH!! This was the comment I was hoping for. And wow- I can’t imagine what it must have been like in the early 20s, let alone the late 1800s! They’ve come a long way.
The first race in America was in 1895 around Chicago. The first Indy 500 was in 1911 one of the longest running sporting events in the world. They didn't race the Indy 500 during both World War, so the Indy 500 this year will be the 108th running. It is also the biggest attended sporting event in the world, the track (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) has 250,000 seats, so on race day they get over 300,000 people with the standing crowd in the infield. Formula 1 (aka F1) started in 1950 after WW2 and is the highest for of motorsport in the planet they annually get 1.5 billion people watching on TV a year.
@DavidvsFilm The first auto race occurred the first time two autos pulled-up alongside each other...
@@DavidvsFilm A great movie about the early days of NASCAR is Greased Lightning. Another great racing film is Heart Like A Wheel, about the first woman in drag racing.
After doing my own wiki dive on the historical parts of the movie when I watched it a year ago or so, it seems Ken Miles truly was the unsung hero.
As someone who doesn’t know, or really care, about cars or car culture, I know of Shelby and McLaren, mainly the specific cars, but the legacy of Miles is lost to time and profit.
I’m glad I gave this movie a shot, because like you I don’t know much about racing, but that was just the setting of a wonderfully written and character-driven story.
Btw the folder scene was my favorite, or the moment he shows The Deuce what is possible rather than was always worked.
Totally!! Yeah I loved how he used the folder as a metaphor. Pretty quick thinking on his feet with that too.
Growing up in Texas in the '60's I idolized Carroll Shelby. He was just the best.
I bet! Isn’t there a Shelby version of a Mustang? If I’m not mistaken..
@@DavidvsFilm indeed there is a Shelby Mustang (and also pure Shelbys not from Ford but from the Shelby factory). Fun fact: there was a Shelby Mustang that you could rent at Hertz. Also, there was Shelby Chili Sauce, I think. He also had a rabbit farm or something.
Carroll Shelby's Chili Kit is still sold in stores today. Weird knowing Chef Boyardee and Carroll Shelby were real people while Betty Crocker was fake.
Kevin here - SO GLAD YOU LIKED IT! always stressful when making a recommendation! Excellent reaction as always!! Keep up the great work David and crew!
Liked? Liked, Kevin?? I’ve watched it 4 times now. Thank you.
:)
The young lad playing Ken’s son is Noah Jupe, a British actor and you’re right, he is very talented. Another beautiful film he was in that is also based on a true story is ‘Wonder.’ Jacob Tremblay who I also love and is an incredible young actor plays the lead role. I won’t say anything about the movie, just watch it. I had it requested by one of my followers and went into it expecting absolutely nothing, just thought it would be another film about some kid. By the end I was crying and willing to walk through fire for the kid that Jacob plays. ❤️
Oh yes!! Is that the movie with Julia Roberts also, I think? I didn't see it, but I remember it coming out. Thank you for the recommendation!!
Yeah the Oscar nominations (and I think a win) were all sound related. Surprise surprise, old race cars sound amazing, they didn't need much help with it.
One of my favorite movies of all time, being a huge car guy myself. All the name-drops of old drivers, the time (and money) they spent to get all those priceless cars together, the love they put into doing this right, it meant a lot to people like me. Us petrolheads are a dying breed, sadly, so it's always awesome to see that there are other people who love cars as much as me.
You're right. That was a great movie.
Thank you! Yeah, I mean it came highly recommended but you never know. And I'm generally not a big car person, so that made it even more rewarding that it hit me.
Took a chance on this when it was in theaters. So glad I did. Such a great movie! ♥
Lotsa great actors in this! ♥ that 'fight' scene 😃 BTW - in case you didn't know this is from a true story
Completely agree wiht you. I didn't know what to expect going in, but wow. I saw that the new Ferrari movie came out recently, but I don't even care. I don't want to dilute my FvF experience haha
Great reaction. I love this movie❤
I'm just like you David....I was like," A car movie🤔I dunno..." And then watched it and thought it was great!!!!
And Christian Bale never disappoints. He is one of my all time favorite actors...ever since he was a cute kid in Empire of the Sun. Another great war film you might want to check out sometime.
Much love from the liquid sunshine state!💚💚😊😊
Watch rush that is a movie about f1's greatest rivalry you'll njoy that too
17:00 in answer to your question, a lot of the very old and prestigious races like Daytona, Le Mans, Indianapolis, etc. date back to almost the beginning of the automobile. But the governing bodies that now oversee these races mostly formed in the years right after WWII. That's when auto racing started to settle into its formalized genres and categories, like NASCAR, Formula 1, endurance racing (this movie), etc.
I love this film! Glad you enjoyed it too David! It is a great story with such amazing acting! The young man who plays Ken's son is also in A Quiet Place, another movie with fabulous acting! It's a bit of a thriller but it's got a very emotional story at its core, highly recommend if you havent seen it yet. Might be a good option for spooky season upcoming 😊
Whaaaaaatttttt???? I totally forgot about that movie. I didn’t even recognize him. Ok now I want to go back and watch that again. Thank you!
Brilliant cast, brilliant storytelling, brilliant movie. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did but damn was it good.🏎🏎
Took the words out of my mouth ;)
As of last year, that message at the end of the credits became outdated when Corvette Racing won Le Mans. Ford also won again in 2016 with an updated version of the GT
Ahhhh thank you!! I really appreciate info like this.
I’ve been waiting on this! 🤩 I was meaning to watch this movie since it premiered but finally did it when you announced you would be reacting to it haha.
Such an awesome reaction again! When you were like “I kind of want him to win but it would also be a good movie moment if he didn’t” I was like 😬 you will get kinda both lol. I didn’t know this story so the result of the race upset me to my core. I was crying angry tears haha. And THEN they hit you with the bombshell that he actually died. I was a sobbing mess. As you said, this movie hits, and much like you, I didn’t expect it to hit me so hard. Christian Bale never disappoints, I love that man so much. ❤️
Also, I’m writing down your quote: “That’s the attitude that comes with the cowboy hat.” Love it! 😊
Oh can we talk about Christian Bale?? My Lord. He’s so good!! I just can’t get over it. I’ve seen actors who I feel like I could reasonably guess what they’re probably like in real life, but him? No idea. He is a true chameleon actor.
This movie was insanely good. This is another reminder of why I’m so grateful to have this channel.
@@DavidvsFilm If you want another Christian Bale movie that is one of my favorites, try Equilibrium. If not for the channel, watch it at least for yourself. ❤️ He’s definitely one of my favorites.
@@Katie_Snow oooh ok. I have heard of it, but don’t know anything.
@@DavidvsFilm I saw YT short about Damon wanting this role so badly specifically to work with Bale for once. We got a goldmine in this one!
Damon is totally Damon always, but Bale is incredible, and my personal diet Gary Oldman with his versatility
Velvet Goldmine isn’t YT appropriate, but it’ll definitely make yourself look at Bale and Ewan McGregor in a… different way.
Love Your Reaction Videos!😊
Hey thank you so much!! I really appreciate you watching them. :)
Showed up for the movie and it ended with "subscribe". Have a good one
Hey you’re awesome! Thank you
10:29 That's why chamois cloth and interns were invented for. Let them touch metal.
Great reaction!
Thank you!!! It was a great movie ;)
You are 100% right saying that cars have been raced since the first few were in invented in late 1890s and early turn of the century. Nascar was referenced a few times in this film. It started in the prohibition era of America. Bootleggers would build extra fast cars to out run the law if need be and raced them to make extra money. Once the Prohibition act was lifted...eventually the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing was formed. Nascar for short. This was the first American Made car to win at Le mans.
Thank you so much! This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
Since you liked this movie, check out "Rush". Also based on a true story, directed by Ron Howard, and music by Hans Zimmer. It's an excellent film!
Hey thank you!! I don’t think I know that one, so I appreciate the recommendation.
Jon Bernthal aka Shane is fantastic in The Punisher...it's gritty, bloody and compelling with some interesting social commentary. It's almost like seeing 'Shane' fighting for the good guy and punishes those who genuinely deseve it.
Ken miles RIP the ending played out just like in the movie on that day they were testing a new car something happened with his brakes. He rolled over and crashed. It was so violent it ripped the seatbelt off. He’s found dead on the dirt RIP.😔
If you like racing movies set in the same era, watch 'Grand Prix' witch was made during the 1966 Formula 1 season... while the acting may be stiff.. but the racing sequences... and the camera agnles are just top notch!
Thanks so much for the recommendation! Sounds great.
Great film. Great chemistry between the leads. Great performances top to bottom. Great pacing. The film shows Miles getting screwed over and over - from Bill with the trunk to the IRS to Leo - and he overcomes each time. We are rooting for him because his natural passion keeps winning against cold cynicism. By the time we see him lose Le Mans on a technicality, our initial outrage is quelled by Miles' calm resignation because he has nothing to prove to us. We are satisfied that he will prevail once again. That's how we are set up for the heartbreak of the accident on the test track.
David, while I am not a racing aficionado, I do like to keep up with what the car companies are putting out and regularly watch Motor Week on our local PBS station. They had done a segment about this movie, Ford and Shelby and so when it played on TV, I had to watch! What an entertaining movie and yes, it does make want to see a documentary about the real people! Also, your reference about Pontiac Le Mans made me think about the fact that I took my driver's test to get my driver's license in my sister's new 1970 Le Mans. Wow!!! I can't believe she let her baby brother drive around in her new car (and it was sweet.)
That’s awesome!! And hey- you can’t beat the Le Mans. Lol. And 1970- that’s when they were built like tanks! You could have taken a direct hit from a missile and still not knocked over the potato salad in the back seat lol.
@@DavidvsFilm Love me some potato salad!
Happy Movie Monday David! 😊
Great reaction!
This is such a great movie. Definitely one of my favorite Matt Damon and Christian Bale films. And I totally forgot that Josh Lucas was in this as well.
Another great race car movie that I highly recommend is the 1990 "Days of Thunder" starring Tom Cruise.
And a great movie starring Josh Lucas that I very highly recommend is the 2002 movie "Sweet Home Alabama". Marc might actually love that one as well.
Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊
Thank you so much!! Ohhh yes, I have seen Sweet Home Alabama about 63,000 times ;) Not recently, but back in the day it was on repeat essentially. (And I still want one of those lightning sculptures lol).
I didn’t see Days of Thunder though, so thanks for reminding me!
It's a nearly perfect movie, very, very close to the true story. There wasn't nearly that much pushback against Ken. He did race at Le Mans the first time but was knocked out with a gear box failure. When they talk about the perfect lap, you can feel it. Should check out when Top Gear reviews the Ford GT.
Totally agree. Yeah I’d be interested in watching a documentary or something on the real folks. And thanks for the heads up about the Ford GT Top Gear! You are going to turn me into a car person yet.
16:55 I feel like racing has always been a human institution… (btw when is Ben-Hur gonna happen??)…
Anyway, I’ve always heard, and maybe someone will fact check me, that Prohibition in the US set the roots of NASCAR. Dukes of Hazard style, those that slightly modified their “stock cars” to outrun police somehow inspired a sport to be created.
Oh Ben-Hur!! Yeah that’s one that would be good watch along, don’t you think?
If you liked this you should watch Rush. Can’t decide which one I like better
I remember seeing the cover to that movie, but I wasn't sure if it was good or not. Thanks for the recommendation! Also, side anecdote- I watched this movie twice back to back (once for the reaction and once during the edit), and then I noticed it was on tv the other day. Kept saying I'd only watch for 5 more minutes, but then I finished the whole movie again lol. It's good!
@DavidvsFilm great movie isn't it. I watched rush first and that got me in the mood for another racing film so I watched F v F and loved them both. I've still got racing fever and that has led me to you. This is the first reaction of yours I have watched. Looking forward to seeing a rush reaction in the future 👍
Oh I Love this Movie so Much❤ My Second Favorite Jon Bernthal movie after The Accountant, Matt Damon & Christian Bale are Phenomenal and Josh Lucas in a role where I absolutely Hate him, I had to go rewatch Sweet Home Alabama lol Oh and Caitriona Balfe as Mollie was Fabulous ❤ Noah Jupe played Peter he was in the film Wonder 2017 with Owen Wilson & Julia Roberts
Completely agree!!! Such a great core cast, and also excellent performances from the smaller roles as well. I hear ya on Josh Lucas- I ended up cutting it from the UA-cam edit, but I said something similar about wishing the Alabama Josh Lucas was here lol
The le mans race celebrated 100 years this year
Oh wow! And thank you- These are exactly the kind of comments I love because I would not have probably known that otherwise.
@@DavidvsFilm also, this year was the first time since 1965 that ferrari won the top class
I love this movie but Leo Beebe is so misrepresented in this. They made him the villain when it should have been beating Ferrari. Ken raced the first that Ford went to Le Mans. It wasn’t his decision for the photo finish. Carrol said that was his biggest regret in his life because he was part of making that decision. Still love the movie and great reaction.
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate you checking out the video. I also really appreciate you adding more detail to the true events.
Well horse racing been a thing since forever so much so there were laws against horse racing on the streets so yeah since cars were first about same as motorbikes
Excellllenntttt point. Thanks for the feedback!
Hard to believe this was directed by the same guy that worked on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 🤦♂️
Really??? I hadn’t heard that yet. Oh wow.
@@DavidvsFilm Well it his name on the box, my guess is that he had a LOT of interference from the head of Lucasfilm.
He did another masterpiece, I believe Logan, basically Wolverine and Professor X years after the first X-Men movie. That's a very, very good movie.
That makes sense. X-Men is a genre that I definitely need to get more into. I’ve only seen the original film way back in the day, as well as the crossover stuff they did recently with Wandavision/Dr Strange. I’ve heard how great Logan is though.
Seat belts back then were seen as a negative. If your car needed seat belts it meant the car was unsafe. Most cars before 1950's didn't have them. And it wasn't until the 70's that it started to become law in progressive states like California.
Yeah I knew most cars didn’t have them back in the day, but I hadn’t considered it from a consumer confidence angle. That’s interesting. Thank you!
You said when was racing invented?
The story goes it was the day after the second automobile was made
That’s about what I figured lol
