I have an extremely strained relationship with my father, who is 80, i'm 46, and just about the only thing we can do together is watch sports or movies.
I took him to the movie theater to watch this after i had already seen it by myself. I could just tell how special this movie was and i thought my dad would be able to relate to it because of the time period and his love for cars.
We talked more about NON sports or movies during the ride home after the movie, then we've probably talked about ANYTHING over the last decade.
THIS is why i love movies (and sports)...they have the power to transcend.
This movie instantly made my Top 10 of all time!

It’s sad and truly shows how dangerous this sport is/was when you realize how many top racers depicted here would be dead in 5 years. Off the top of my head, two of the three team Ford finishers(Miles and McLaren) AND Kens Italian rival Enzo Bandini would all die in accidents soon after.

A few recommendations for auto racing films:
Grand Prix (1966) - A three-hour epic following a full Formula 1 season starring James Garner. Some of the scenes outside the racing are a bit dull, but the on-track action is incredible.
Le Mans (1971) - Stars Steve McQueen and uses footage from the 1970 24h of Le Mans. McQueen was actually an endurace racer himself.
Rush (2013) - Tells the story of James Hunt's and Niki Lauda's 1976 F1 championship battle, starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl and directed by Ron Howard.

As another note, this was the age of innovation. For the last twenty years I have raced vintage sportscars. and it fascinates me still the difference between a well engineered car with a poor driver, and a hand-built with a good one. I got protested one year in a Bocar XP-5 for illegal brakes by a Porsche 911rsr driver because I beat him into and out of three consecutive corners on two different laps.... Made him crack a wheel off and stare at the 12" drum brakes.... he became my best friend for the rest of the weekend.

There was a fun story from set, the crew talked about. One day the car with Christian Bale crashed. And one thing to know about it is that when an actor is inside, the car doesn't actually drive, it's attached to a rig, that's driven by professional drivers, while actor is... well, he only acts like he's driving. So, after the crash happened, and it did at a very high speed and didn't happen instantly as the rig lost control and couldn't stop, they looked into the footage of what what happened inside the car. All to see how Christian Bale struggled and spun the wheel to the very end, knowing that he had literally no control over the situation. The man thought he was about to die and decided to go out as a great actor.
The footage didn't make it to the final cut, as far as I know, though.

It's a great little piece (about 15 min - and pretty entertaining) and will give you a better understanding of the full story, not all of it but more than this film - which does a pretty good job but of course they did change things to fit the film, mostly compressing the time the story took place over.

Most of the CGI is actually regarding the car texture's and liveries. As well as the crowds and most of the architecture of Le Mans and Daytona (facilities obviously have changed since 1959 and 1966). Other notable CGI scenes is the glasses shot from Daytona and Ken Miles breaking the lap record for the last time. Most of the film is practical with models and the sound that was captured was from an authentic Ford GT40 engine revving at all different levels!
This film is a cinema miracle for real! For me it captured the real essence and feel of the sport like Steve McQueen's Le Mans and Grand Prix with the cinematic thrill of Rush. It feels so authentic!
You really should check out "Grand Prix" and "Le Mans", the only two films that feel so authentic and grounded in showcasing motorsport as dangerous and exhilarating. "Rush" also captures the danger and allure of the sport too but also covers an amazing true to life narrative. My only problem with the film are its annoying zoom-ins which for me personally ruins the immersion.

If you have ever taken a breathalizer test, do ten breaths like that. I find holding a "magic talisman" (eg a random coin) and focusing on that, then sticking it in your shirt pocket (so the magic really works where it is needed most) helps.
Alternatively, if you have eaten bread, cake, chips or the like too quickly or swallowed suddenly, this can cause hiccups by food or air trapped in your gullet pressing against your windpipe. Drinking a glass of water works in these cases.

The worst motor sports racing accident in history happened at a Le Mans race in 1955. 83 spectators killed, and nearly 200 more were injured. There is footage of it, and you can find it on youtube. It's horrific though.

For the record most races don't require you to run to the car. That is just something they do at the 24 hours of Le Mans. That's why it's referred to in the racing community as a "Le Mans Start".

Miles was noted for being both a fine driver and a fine engineer, which is exactly what is wanted when you're developing a car. he had worked with Shelby before the GT40 effort started and Shelby wanted him onboard very badly.

the running was called a "LeMans start" and has been forbidden for a long, long time. drivers tended to take off without being fully ready, for example, not being strapped in.

I love the speech Shelby gives at the Mustang launch event. Truly showcases that the absolute GOATs of most things, don't do it because they love it, they do it because they HAVE to. Nothing else makes them feel like that thing. So they live and breath it.

If your up for more racing movies I suggest TT: Closer to the Edge. It's a documentary about the Isle of Man TT motorbike race. It has some pretty jaw dropping moments and gives a nice insight into the mentality of people who race super fast vehicles. You may need subtitles though as there are some fairly impenetrable English accents, and that's coming from someone from the UK. Love your stuff dude.

First, great reactions, you're very perceptive of subtle choices that are made in great movies to make them great (if that makes any sense haha).
Sorry for the long comment, but I wanted to leave a few notes:
The scene where Ken Miles is listening to the radio broadcast of the 1965 Le Mans race is fictional. I don't think there was a broadcast of the race in Southern California then (probably anywhere in the US). He was one of the drivers there at Le Mans with the team, but all of the Ford cars broke down (most with transmission failures) and Ferrari won again.
At the 1966 Daytona 24 Hours, Miles didn't win on the last lap, he won by EIGHT laps. Ford locked out four of the first five places in a preview of how dominant they would be that year at Sebring and Le Mans as well.
The last year drivers had to run to the cars for the start at Le Mans was 1969. Incidentally, that year Jacky Ickx refused to do it and calmly walked to his car at the start because he felt it was unnecessarily dangerous. Despite being the last car to start, he won the race anyway (in a Ford GT40).
Leo Beebe wasn't as bad a guy as he is portrayed in the film. He was actually a big part of the whole Ford Total Performance era. In real life he took the blame for the screwup at the finish, but it was probably Henry Ford II's idea. The French organizers didn't appreciate the attempt to stage a dead heat finish, so they came up with a technicality to make sure it couldn't happen.
Although they made other changes from pure historical accuracy, I still love this movie. They did a great job of capturing the visceral thrill of this era of racing, plus the unique relationship between Miles and Shelby. While watching it in the theatre I was kind of amazed that a big budget Hollywood film was made about a relatively obscure (outside of sports car racing) subject. The fact that the filmmakers were passionate about the real people of the story really showed on screen. It's also a perfect example (along with Rush) of using CGI to fill in the background without distracting from real people interacting with real things.
I'll add another recommendation for Rush (2013), along with Senna (2010). Grand Prix (1966) is very entertaining if a bit too melodramatic with a soapy plot, where Le Mans (1971) is exactly the opposite in that there's barely any plot to distract from the amazing footage of the 1970 race. Both have incredible camera work using real cars at real tracks and real races.

Late 70's - 10 years behind this racing history, went to racing school, received professional license. Even offered a seat at Le Mans. (Oh. Hell. No.) But... You're a 'Top Tier' driver... Ok, Name a 'Top Tier Le Mans' driver that 'has-not' crashed a car at 175mph (281kph) or above. They couldn't, because they all had. Ford v Ferrari was 66, 67, 68, 69. & The rash of accidents that occurred over the next few years & the increasingly high number of drivers that were killed in auto racing scared the holy hell out of everyone, including me. Carried the license w/pride but refused to race any race car, in any race, anywhere, & this movie shows everybody why. Those deaths, including Ken Miles', are also what prompted the safety measures that started moving into the sport that save so many drivers lives to this day.

when you hickup it's your diaphragm spasming. like with any muscle you have to stretch it to stop the spasm. inhale as hard as you can to stretch the diaphragm and hold your breath for 12+ seconds. repeat if need be.

This film really is one of those rare can't-put-my-finger-on-it films. The more I try and pinpoint or dissect, I feel like I am getting further away from this gem. I could go on about the frames/shots, the colour temperature, Mangold at the helm, that script(!), but nah. It just is something bigger than it's parts (which reminds me of Moneyball). So glad you checked it out even though for some reason I knew you'd get to it ;)
My fave bit of trivia about FvF would be that it almost got made with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. It came so close that they even had a table read, WITH the same script. It's just fun to think that those two are on the look out for a movie to pair them up again (since Interview With A Vampire). Here's the clip:

Cure for Hiccups..draw deep breath through mouth. While holding this ..draw a small breath through mouth and then SWALLOW it. Do this 2 more times.....by the 3rd time it will be difficult but draw that last breath and swallow it all while holding 1st original breath. Now hold as long as you can and then SLOWLY exhale through mouth. Hiccups cured...Works every time!
