New Software Defined Radio software! Pi/Windows/Linux/Mac

  • For Linux/RaspberryPi, Software Defined Radio (SDR) software was generally limited to GQRX, which works great, but now we also have SDR++. This new cross-platform SDR waterfall works perfectly with your favorite SDR dongle, allowing you to see large portions of a band and pounce on unsuspecting transmitters. As a bonus, I'm including a PL-tone command-line filter that works on Pi/Linux, letting you listen to repeaters without the annoying PL-tone. SDR++ Let's listen!
    To get rid repeater PL-tones, fire up SDR++ and set the audio sink to "network", or fire up GQRX and press the [UDP] button.
    then run:
    nc -l -u 7355 | play --buffer 100 -t raw -b 16 -e signed -r 48k - -r 16k sinc 0.3k -n 3000
    Good bye PL Tone!
    apt install sox, if you haven't already

    I can tell you for a fact that at the time this video was posted, we were not just limited to GQRX on linux. We had SDRAngel, LinRad, CubicSDR, GNURadio, and SDR++, which has had a stable linux build since August 2021.

    I've been using SDR# for a long time. That has had a "filter audio" checkbox as long as I can remember so is another program to try out if you're interested. It also has lots of plugins like for decoding digital voice modes.

    I built a portable SDR receiver using SDR++, Nexus 7 tablet, custom designed 3D printed case, 12Ahr of 18650's and RTLSDRv3. The only thing missing from SDR++ is some good noise reduction. Then I would consider SDR++ perfect!

      @@caaande Haven't tried any LNAs specifically but do use it with a K-180WLA loop antenna. It's nice as I can connect it directly and use the RTLSDRv3 bias T, reducing cables and extra hardware.

    Hello Craig, thank you for that excellent presentation!
    In Debian 12 "bookworm" I had to use this slightly modified syntax for nc :
    nc -lup 7355 | play --buffer 100 -t raw -b 16 -e signed -r 48k - -r 16k sinc 0.3k -n 3000
    Anyway there is now a "High Pass" option in the "Radio" section of the latest build, that does the same thing for NFM.

    Theoretically, you could also use a mixer to reduce background noise if your music mixer has that capability. Never tried it before but its the same as white and pink noise in music production.

    Great. For those who run Linux and are considering buying an RTL-SDR V4, the Debian terminal commands on the SDR++ website take care of the necessary drivers for Mint. V4 is much better than V3 on HF because of the up-converter. Now, if I can just get rid of all the spikes across HF from the SPS on my desktop... As is, it's only clean by using it on my Mint laptop with the desktop turned off. Running it on battery, not the charger, also lowers the noise floor quite a bit,

    • @SomeTechGuy666
      @SomeTechGuy666 6 місяців тому

      Does it get better if you run it using a long USB B extension cable, moving it away from the computer ? Should be pretty easy to put a noise filter on the +5VDC USB wire as well.

    • @JCO2002
      @JCO2002 6 місяців тому

      @@SomeTechGuy666 Tried that with a 2m cable. No help. It has to be right outside. Got a 6m cable a few days ago, which will allow me to put the dongle itself outside on the concrete roof of the house I rent here in Jamaica. Have to make a little waterproof enclosure for it. Experimented with my laptop, and I'm fairly sure that will take care of the SPS problem with the desktop. Certainly hope so.

    The RTLSDR wasn't the radio that started it all. The USRP and GNU Radio was out for years before RTLSDR was a thing, it's just that the USRP was very expensive. RTLSDR was the first super cheap SDR that was widely available, with the limitation that it's only 2MHz bandwidth, which for audio is fine, but makes it rather useless for many things. And it's not like the USRP or GNU Radio was the first software defined radio either - GNU Radio was the first open source SDR framework (I believe).

    • @Martinroadsguy
      @Martinroadsguy Рік тому

      So you're saying it wasn't the one that started it all, but it was the first one that was popular and accessable. Got it.

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis Рік тому

      @@Martinroadsguy What started the popularity was the availability of very cheap DVB-T dongles that could be hacked for use a general SDR, with some limitations.

    SDR++ allowed me to ditch windows basically lol, really been digging it. Haven't figured out how plugins work, or whatever they are calling them, but haven't spent much time on it either. From what I can tell the default install is missing some modules that are available.

    Heyo! I've been searching forever for a way to use my Raspberry Pi 3B+ as a transceiver, problem is most RTL SDRs are like 5W, and won't get me any contacts. Do you have any recommendations for SDRs for the Pi that you can set up to transmit like an actual transceiver? Thanks for any help in advance :D

    I recently installed SDR++ on a Raspberry Pi 4, using the RTL-SDR V4 and I'm running into a strange problem. The frequencies are shifted totally off. I'm trying to tune the 6m band and I'm receiving broadcast FM in the 95 kilohertz range instead. How can it be that far off?

    • @BamaChad-W4CHD

      Are you familiar with how to change your ppm? All sdr dongles are off frequency from the factory and need a adjustment. For example my first one and most used always has to be set to plus 55 ppm. That's it's sweet spot.
