  • Continuing our Apocalypse series we look at the Tragic fall of Septimus 3. in just a few short hours a resounding klingon victory degenerates into a brutal massacre of the defeated cardassian soldiers, and the civillians caught in between. Many seemingly insignificant decisions made by allied officers would add up to a complete breakdown in disipline, an demonstrate the true horror of what a klingon invasion can look like.

Say what you would like about the Klingons. Historically, They're supremely talented at two things: Waging war against enemies who can easily surpass the firepower of their warships, oftentimes winning through sheer aggression, superior tactics and greater numbers. And holding the territories that they've conquered. In a lot of ways, they remind me of a space borne Mongol Empire.

Yet it was a battle with a game changing in respect of the wilder was as the dominions callous abandonment of the 11 order proved how horrifically cavalier they would be with Cardassian lives as nothing more than cannon folder, causing the spark of rebellion to burn within damar.

Harrowing. Brilliantly written, acted and edited. Wow, this was amazingly well done - and horrifying to contemplate. And Martok using things for political leverage is yet another necessary evil - or so one might call it.
And the Federation is also guilty at some level - at least of indifference by letting these be prosecuted internally by the Klingons. War is always a matter of failures and compromises of so many levels, but I can't think that this is among the worst enabled (or at least tolerated) parts of the Federation Coalition. The intelligence operation that brought the Romulans into the war had but a few small incidental casualties and arguably was one of the main things that saved the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. The disease wrought on hte Founders by Section 31 was done by a secret intelligence agency - and then sanctioned by the Federation Council.
It's a crime on par with the Founder's virus - and worse because it served no true 'higher' purpose as one might justify or define it. Leaving the Klingons to tend to thier own house is as shameful a lapse as almost anything else done over the conflict. And the breakdown in communications that had the reports being sent to Klingon High Command and the theatre commander of the operations but never shared with the Starfleet forces on blockade duty or from Chin'toka itself makes one have to wonder if unoffiically.. That indifference was high enough to have said reports but never to act upon them at the time.
War makes everyone callous to the enemy. Even to the best of us.

  • @Redshirt434
    @Redshirt434 3 місяці тому

So, in my head canon, The Federation ultimately forced the Dominion hand by going to war too early by mining the wormhole, because once they were able to withstand the initial onslaught, and the Romulans joined the Frey, the Dominion weakness of not fully fortifying theur Alpha Quadrant foothold, and the substandard Cardassian infrastructure, we can see how the war fell into a war of attrition.

@MrGunlover12 Ordering fire missions on civilian structures? Klingon honor considers it wrong to prey on the weak. Theoretically, obviously.
And if that's not enough, there's definitely how he acted in Way of the Warrior. Bullying Quark? Assaulting Garak with a bunch of his buddies? These are not the actions of a brave man.

@@erikjaroy8214well that Martok had already been replaced by a Changling and the Changling was probably happy to have another bloodthirsty Klingon like Drex around for the upcoming attack on Cardassia...
But yeah I've no clue why the real Martok didn't properly train his son years earlier. Maybe it's a problem of a son not taking after his father and refusing his discipline. Or maybe it was the writers not knowing next season they would have the warmongering Martok be a Changling infiltrator and later on the real one being the most honorable Klingon we've ever seen besides Worf himself! ... Probably the second explanation but still overall the DS9 story is so compelling and coherent I wonder why all other Star Trek series couldn't have thought ahead like they clearly did when they made Deep Space 9!

In short, they do commit war crimes. But generally those are banned and heavily punished. For reminder IRL war crimes are banned not for moral reasons, but practical one. Those practices tend to heavily backfire. What we do see in war with Ukraine. Where Russia heavily compromised themselves, for minor gains. Same was true in Pacific War, where Japanese constantly break rules of law. It cost them more, as after several cases of wounded being used as cover for attack, throwing grenades in medics. Americans start simply prescriptively bombing hospitals. And they have full right to do so. As result more Japanese died then Americans.

God knows where I got this stuff but I need yo relax my nerves before I talk about this one. Sure I know what planetary sieges look like and I’ve watched a few. Septimus 3 was an unmitigated slaughter. The orders were to “ let the Klingons go”. Part of me wanted to punish them for attacking hospital ships but that’s why the RRTF was escorting them. I know the Darkside of vengeance, that’s what brought me back to Starfleet. Now I see a new purpose, to save those young idealist officers and people who have yet to join. General Martok became Chancellor by the end of the War, I am sure he placed many of the perpetrators of the Septimus III massacres in the Vanguard of the fleet prior to the fall of Cardassia.

@@venomgeekmedia9886 I'm pretty sure he meant he put the worst elements of the Klingons at the point of the spear for teh Invasion of Cardassia- i.e., telling them to GO WIN GLORY while expecting most of them to die in the first wave (removing the problem, while also allowing their families to retain their honor).

I always wondered what happened to Martok's son after Worf pimp slapped him since he never appears again or is even mentioned again in the show. I always thought that Worf's treatment of Martok's son is why Martok's wife didn't like him.

It's all Worf's fault. Worf stole his honor and embarrassed him in front of his subordinates. The only option left to renew his honor was to achieve victories against the Dominion during the war. That's also why he didn't show up for Worf and Dax's wedding.

Bonus points to the medical station that could detect a cloaked Bird of Prey.
You always take prisoners so that the others don't feel they have to fight to the death.
NOW; if you want to kill them after the battle is over, so be it.
But why work harder than you have too?

The 'Butcher' of El Adriel? Isn't El Adriel where Darmoc and Jillad went to Tanagra? I didn't think they had people there, only invisible beasts that made the walls fall.
But to the meat. Your perspective is very Federationist and humanist. The Klingons complained about this in one of their visits to the Enterprise. So I ask you, hooman, what did the pink skins think would happen when they unleashed the Klingon horde? It's like when 3 and 1/2 Men hired Charlie Sheen and then were shocked, shocked that he would do blow off a porn stars butt. What 'crime' did a people who know the call of blood commit? The only one I see is that the commanders dishonored the second wave of warriors who came down too late and saw the first wave, which included women, achieved all the glory. That's an actual Klingon crime (or it should be.)
Just as the West is not the world, the Federation is not the Alpha Quadrant. The Borg would probably agree that the Klingons are efficient. The Romulans would judge them as a savage subspecies as orbital bombardment and enslavement would be more helpful to the glory of the Emporer. The Breen would be cool with it. The Founders would secretly be impressed and scoff at the weakness of the Cardasians. I doubt even the Tholians would give a damn. Maybe the Kzinti would care. No, Hooman, you are just preaching your silly Federation values or as the Klingons call it, 'the white woman's burden.' Kaplah Baby!
    Awesome vidoe btw. Great topic.
