I’ve written my best hooks without the intent of writing them to be one. Just wrote a bunch of lyrics and sometimes some of them just pop, stand out. Good advice. New to the channel but I already can see how passionate about music you are man. I dig it
I've been searching youtube for years to get exactly this video. I couldn't quite put my finger on the building blocks missing of writing a vocal melody and you just did it so simple. Thank you!
Thanks bro! Everything you are saying makes such sense. I have been struggling with being creative. I can play very well and I don't have trouble my guitar. But I have I guess "writer's block". I overthink it. This is a good approach and I have some ideas now.
This is great! 10:30 You are not being explicit about what I had found out, to my surprise: that you change chords while keeping up your thing. In other word: You do not want to "wait for the harmonies". They do not matter to you. So is the hook the notes you sing or is it the chords. Any good musician might say: it's with or without you. How do "hook" and "chorus line" relate to each other?
I wish the homework I had at school was writing hooks. Nope... Memorising the elements of the periodic table instead. Still, I'm glad. I use that information day in, day out 🙃
I would argue that perhaps the drums in "We Will Rock You" by Queen and in "Down With the Sickness" by Disturbed act as hooks since they help identify the song as soon as your hear them. But great video, great example of hook writing. Thank you for sharing!
Yep, agreed! The difficulty with hooks that aren't melodic is making them unique. Usually it's done through the production rather than the actual composition of the music (i.e. what the drums sound like rather than what the drummer is actually playing). As always, there are some exceptions, and I think you've highlighted two good ones!
Every song I sing has auto-tune because I can't sing. Lol. However I make sure to process everything in pentatonic scale. Hopefully someone will sing along. ☺️🤘
I can make up a tune wether it's good, bad, dreadful,,but thats it,,and they never get used... I actually need to actually get a frigging pen paper and actually write lyrics no matter what they are.and see what happens. . sounds like a plan.🎤🎸🏴🇬🇧.

It's not a talent, it's not a gift, it's a process.
Amen.

I think it is a talent a skill and a learnable a song is a chain of correct decisions
This is so helpful!. When I heard you singing the melody I immediately go "wooah". Thanks!
Wow....that was pretty simple. Making those sounds helps me get to a catchy hook sometimes.

I like okay
It’s hard to take you seriously when you’re not a known songwriter. Like if your process isn’t working for you why would it work for us ?
I think that some people are inherently better than others at writing music no matter how much you try

And this is exactly how Dua Lipa comes up with their hits.
You should turn this into an actual song
Sounds like the formula for writing another crappy, forgettable pop song 🙄
