For diabetics who do not do well on a micronutrient rich high carb vegan diet, it is possible to try increasing fat and decreasing carb. Vegan high fat diets are unable to go too low on carb bec most vegan foods have carb. It is possible to go very low carb on vegetarian diets or animal based diets. High fat diets to treat diabetics are as old as the early 1900s and were the main treatment before the discovery of insulin. Even after insulin, Sir Frederick Banting was still using high fat diets.

For vegan diabetic, can try Dr Joel Fuhrman advice first to get the basic nutrition fixed & get all the micronutrients from food like vitamin a, vitamin b12, vitamin d, to zinc. Getting all the micronutrients from food for at least one month could fix the bodies of vegan diabetics even on the high carb diet. The body does prefer to burn carb first over fat. Eating healthy vegan food with micronutrients could temporarily raise blood sugar so patience is needed to wait if the body can fix itself.

High fat diets tend to bring immediate good results so many diabetics who micro manage their blood sugar levels are usually low carbers. Since most humans burn carb most of the time, the long term dangers of high fat diets are not well known whether high fat vegan, high fat vegetarian, or high fat omnivore. Most vegan heart doctors do not like high fat diets bec of some evidence for high fat diets causing heart disease. Very few studies so far on plant fat which seem healthier than animal fat.
