My Final REVIEW of the Continental TKC 70 Rocks - 8000km

  • I finally got to the point where I could give the Continental TKC 70 Rocks a proper ride on gravel and mix terrain. After a 3000km trip in Sweden I got a much better understanding of why this tire is so popular. A great ADV Tire I most definitely will choose again. I got one in backorder and will be testing it even more on future adventures.

    There are tyre reviews and then there are your tyre reviews. The information you provide is very detailed but what makes your videos head and shoulders above some other, similar content is the phenomenal camera work editing, colour grading and breath-taking locations!

    Thanks for making the video Thomas. The English word is sleet - sounds the same. After trying every tire out there, from Alaskan back roads, British Columbia Backroads, highways, and rain, to Mexican sand, I'm now married to Motoz Adventure for durability, and overall traction. I don't think any one tire is perfect however, all have limitations. I used TKC 80 (on the front) on my last Baja tour spending a week in soft Mexican sand - it did OK, nothing remarkable. It's just what is the best balance for you as the rider. I know professional Baja racers and trainers that like Kenda Big Blocks on their ADV bikes ( Jimmy Lewis - KTM 1090R/ 1190R) - I've never tried them but know they are pretty soft compounds. With Jimmy, I'm sure he could ride with bald tires more effectively than 99% of riders anyway, so not sure how much tires play into his selection, besides sponsors....So there you go.

      Appreciate it Shayne. Sleet is a word I have never used before so I'm learning new stuff every day 👏🏻 Thank you. I had the Motoz Adventure on my 690 back a some years ago, I should probably try them again on this bigger bike. They can be a little bit hard to come by here in Norway, and the price is normally higher than the other tires I get. And as you say, there is no perfect tire, there is just rubber between the surface and the rider that suits you or not. Cheers mate.

    Hi Thomas, nice review...and nice filming and editing too. Sounds like a good tyre...but it's such a personal thing. I have TKC 80's on my XR650R...but very happy with the Pirelli Scorpion Rally str's on the T7. My order of importance is wet/cold grip on the road and ' reasonable ' grip off road. I know they are not great in mud and wet grass, but not many so called adventure tyres are. The Pirelli's do fine on the hard pack trails and little grey lanes i love and are brilliant on the road rain or shine! It's a confidence thing i guess. Cheers, Steve

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  Рік тому

      Hello Stephen… i could not agree more. It always amaze me how much attention something silly as a tire review can get. It seams like the average joe is terrified of buying the “wrong” tire. But the fact is, it is so damn personal, style, bike etc. So you just need to try out a couple for yourself and find what you love and stick to it. I loved the Pirelli on road, but not off-road so much. I have my combo that i love, and i understand that people want to know why and what tires i recommend, but it can still be completely wrong for you or the next person. Cheers mate. Appreciate your comment.

    Hey Thomas, I watched attentively your review of these tires. I am on my third different brand since getting my ATAS (Shinko when I purchased, Motoz for my x Canada trip and now Dunlops). I find it difficult to see the difference between the Shinko and the Dunlops. I feel that the TKC look similar to the Dunlops. So far my favorite are the Motoz although they are noisy as f*** on the highway! Thanks for the review and glad to see that you are home safe and sound. Cheers!

      Hello Roger. I think that in todays market, tires are pretty much the same except the tread pattern. You can’t hardly miss on choosing any tire in a certain category, but like you say. You need to find the tires that fits your style, type of surface and noise if you think that is bad. I had the anakee 3 on my R1200… those are the most noisy tires i have ridden. Holy crap. Sing me a song every time you hit about 50-60 km/h 😂 Back to work today, back out on the road again tomorrow 🤌🏻 Cheers

    Ahh, alot of great things in this video Tjommi 😁. Top quality! It is as much a hint on a ADV trip as the review. I have never thought of TKC 80 as a really great offroad tyre, but for many years one of few options for heavy ADV bikes. These TKC 70 looks a tad less "aggressive" than the E07+ but both seems great for the travel with a few surprises. I have some footage from the last ride where i really tried the limits of the E07+ 😂👍. Let's see what i can do with that. One of the riding buddies just said in the end of the day "Mattias, those tires have really delivered today", i was teh only one at that meeting with "road tyres" 👀😅. Thats how it goes when you are stubborn, cheap and want to try things out...

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  Рік тому +1

      Hahaha, you know it Tjommi, always a secret message in between the lines 😂 That’s the way we do it. That is actually a really good point. The TKC80 was probably the only knobby tires in the size for large adventure bikes, and made it way into the myth or legend about being the best adventure tire. Never thought of it like that, but it make perfect sense. Hahaha, was that the trip when you had a little bath? 😂 You better make that a video. We all want to see how that tire delivered. Yes, i think the mitas looks more aggressive as well, but there is just something about the logs on the rear on the Rocks that makes it really easy to control (when spinning in corners) and it bites better in some of the loose stuff. Hard to explain. Stubborn is a treat my good friend 👏🏻👏🏻🔥 Cheers

    in 2021 I did a trip to spain and portugal riding a mix of twisties, tet and act routes. I did it on my heavy r1200gs mounted with a tkc 70 rocks rear. I loved almost everything about the tyre, it did decent on gravel and sand, it did great on twisty roads, it was less noisy and vibrated less on highways than the e-07. The major downsides to me were price and durability, where I am the tkc 70 cost about twice of the e-07 and lasts half as long. I know the e-07 sacrifices some road performance to get more durability but the tkc-70 rocks just melted too quickly for me to buy it again, I just barely got over 6000km out of it.

    • @tshansen

      Yeah, that is just to fast and for mixed use, i think a tire should last around 10.000km. Mine was gone after 8000, but i will try it again to see if i get similar result. If not, I’m sticking to the mitas my self.

    Thanks for the great review, had my TKC70 Rocks fitted yesterday, was torn between the TKC80 front or the 70 but opted for the 70 as most of my travelling will be tarmac with some gravel roads mixed in. One thing I have noticed is that the back tyre wanders a little from side to side causing a slight wobble, did you have the same? Paul. 😎🏍️

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  Рік тому

      Hello Paul. Would love to hear how you experience the 70 front. I found it to be cupping a lot. Funny you mention it, I can't remember the wobble feeling on the tkc70 rocks. but I put on a new rear mitas e-07+ and that felt a little bit wandering on the freeway today. So I do imagine it is a brand new tire feel. It will settle when the tire is ridden in. Cheers

    Interesting... I had a pair on my BMW r1200GSA last year - Rocks back and TKC70 in front (not 80, like you). I found the noise to be really loud. More than acceptable. And I wore them out much sooner then I expected - with a lot of 'stepping' in the front... In addition I felt the rear 'slipping' when cornering on tarmac, so I didn't feel comfortable with them at all...
    Since I had to replace them in Montenegro, my only option in the little town were a pair of Metzeler Tourance Next 2. Fantastic road tires, which were OK, since I was going on tarmac all the way home to Norway. I think my next set will be Dunlop TrailMax Mission... Thanks for good videos!

      Strange. I ride winter in uk and below freezing on wet tarmac I have never had a slide on the rocks rear. Agree with noise on front and actually find the 80 about as loud if on a slightly different pitch. 80 just gives me a lot more confidence on broken roads and gravel. Will be riding this combo to Nordcapp this summer after visiting my parents in Sweden. I ride a GSA1250 for reference.

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  Рік тому

      I had the tkc70 front on my BMW R1200 GSA back in 2016. And the cupping on that tire was just crazy. So I don't think I would ever ride that tire on a big bike again. The rocks I have never feel slipping, and I find them to be really predictable when spinning in corners on gravel. Interesting to hear that we have so different opinions on this matter, and that is not wrong. It just prove that you really need to test this things out yourself and find the tire that suits your style and bike best. I have tried the Tourance next 2 as well, the front wear out way to fast for my liking, but I think that could have something to do with my suspension leaking on the R1200. They was really stable road tires, but nothing I would prefer on the gravel. The trailmax I have not tried my self, but are on the list of tires I will try If I can get my hands on them. Cheers mate

      I had the TKC 70 Rocks in the rear and the TKC 70 in front on my GS 1250. The noise level rose at about 80km/h and went down again at 85. The front was good on tarmac but lousy on deeper gravel etc. No guidance! So I took the advice given by Kyle Bradshaw. TKC80 in front and TKC70 Rocks in the rear. Some noise due to the nobby but very stable on deep gravel terrains. Good enough on dry and wet tarmac roads to bridge between offroad sections. Bad (rear) on wet grass and in mud. Lasted close to 7.000km. However, for TET/ACT I use either Anakee Wild or the new Karoo4. Karoo4 rear performs much better in wet road conditions than the Wild. Off-road both tyres are superb. It is a matter of availability which of the sets I put on. My next long trip will be in the North again. TET Sweden, TET Finland. This summer😊

    I have a 70 Rocks rear and a TKC70 front, I feel maybe the TKC80 front maybe a better option especially for the gritty roads around the UK countryside as the are less likely to slip out on gravel. What’s your experience of the TKC80 front on the road and in wet conditions. Is there a lot of road noise and are they slippery in the wet?

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  11 місяців тому +1

      Well, i have been riding with the tkc80 front for many years now, and i run them in all possible “Norwegian” conditions without a slip or any bad feeling. It is absolutely the best road/gravel tire i have tested. And they are really cheap here in Norway compared to other brands. Cheers

    Hi, just a question about a possible recommendation for a Trip to Norway. My daughter will follow us this year to Norway with her CB125R from Honda. Final Destination so fare ( Geiranger ) Our plan was to take also some parts of the TET Section 1 and 2. We are well equipped with our GS1250 but Im not sure about the Honda. How difficult will be the TET for that kind of Motorcycle ? What is your opinion on that?

    Enig. Har du prøvd max mission? Disse er meget utrygge på grov grus, som å kjøre på gelé, sammenlignet med rocks. Skal til Island i sommer, så da må det bli rocks til den turen. (GSA)

    You have been riding the Dunlop Trailmax Raid now, how do you find them vs. the Rock rear and tkc80 front?

    Good, versatile tyres are always a compromise, Thomas. The Heidenau K60 Scout on my old Transalp 600 last longer (about 10.500 km), are better offroad. I ride 50-50 oder 40-60 mostly gravel tracks. I don't know how well the Saxonian tyres (Heidenau) perform in your Norwegian combination of rain and snow (sleet). I've met quite a few people who are perfectly happy with the Conti TKC 70 Rocks (or the Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR). I'm surprised that you still ride the TKC 80 front in wet weather. There are more modern alternatives, but all of them are harder to change on the rims. Cheers from Nürnberg, Günter

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  Рік тому +1

      That is so true Günter... if a tire is good at one thing, it lack in another. I always try to find the best compromise for my kind of adventure riding. And I'm sorry to say that I travel way more on tarmac then I like, but I always explore a gravel road when I come by them 🤣 I have not tried the K60 my self, but I hear they are really dangerous on wet tarmac? The TKC80 up front is the best front tire I have come across, the 90/90 R21 profile with the small knobs are just perfekt for all conditions. I have yet to find a front that does so well on gravel and on tarmac at the same time. Cheers mate.

      @enduromotorradtouren Рік тому

      @@tshansen The Heidenau K60 Scout is better on the rear than on the front. Especially in mud. Traction from behind, yes, more than expected. But the front is twitchy in such conditions, you're not as planted as on a TKC 80. That's why I'm changing to a bit more aggressive Heidenau Ranger for Romania this summer. Hope that the front performs better in mud. But having said that - I come from a Metzeler Tourance on my Transalp 600, with very rare tipovers offroad ;-) Apart from mud the Heidenau K60 Scout perform very well on my old Honda, also on wet tarmac. Much better than Mitas (which are fairly similar elsewhere). But beware: There are three different tyres called K60 Scout. The narrow one (120/130) with a central groove that I ride. Good traction, good longevity. The middle segment 140/150 without a central groove but with a central strip. Good longevity, but not much traction offroad. And then there is another tyre for the GS heavyweights with a 170 rear. Also not much traction offroad because of rubber in the rear centre for longevity instead of grooves. People tend to talk about the one and only K60 Scout, but there is a difference. UA-camr Frankythereal from Germany loved the K60 Scout on his Africa Twin 750, hated them on his newer Tenere 700. Has to do with the construction/width of the rear tyre. For your T7 you have found your personal best combination, Thomas. Enjoy the season, Günter

      @@enduromotorradtouren This is really valuable information for me Günter. I know this is true about the tkc80 front as well, you have two different tires, the narrow good one that fits the 21 inch, and the more like a rear wheel for the lower rims, that is not as good. Yeah, i think there will always be a search for the perfect tires. I love my setup, but also enjoy trying new combinations. Cheers

I just put on a new e-07+ my self, I got some of them earlier for a really nice price 1200,- Nok for a rear tire is gold! But now the prices has gone up like crazy over here. So you are lucky to get a rear tire under 2000,-

      Problem with tires that hold so long is that the rubber is hard (more plastic og silica and other stuff) ...
      Hard rubber is not good on cold and wet tarmac. Specially not on Norwegian twisty coast roads with lot of salt on them...
