I opened a music store (compact discs) in 1988. We sold the heck out of this. Bobby Brown was a big deal then too. Other interesting new artists from that time whose first albums still sound great (fresh) today were: Living Colour-Vivid; Guns n Rises - Appetite for Destruction; Joe Satriani - Surfing With the Alien; and Melissa Etheridge - self titled. All were groundbreaking new bands and albums, and big sellers.

Paula was a former LA Lakers cheerleader/choreographer. Jackie Jackson pulled her to do some choreography. She ended up choreographing for Janet - What Have You Done for Me Lately, Control, When I think of You and Nasty. She also did the African dance sequence for Coming to America. Check out “Opposites Attract” to see more of her tap.

    Just a few fun facts:
She’s a professionally trained dancer choreographer, and you see it in her videos. If you really want to see her bring the dance moves, watch the Cold Hearted video. She also choreographed many of the videos in Janet’s Control album!
Also, the only reason Arsenio is in this video is because he was hanging out with her on set that day! He was watching her film and they asked if he wanted to be in the video! He and Paula are lifelong close friends and may have even been dating at this time ✌🏽

A straight up dope reaction ✨! She killed that tap dancing scene 💃🏼. The song is rumored to be about Arsenio Hall who was her man at the time. She was a guest judge on DWTS but she didn't dance. Straight Up was released as the third single from Paula Abdul's 1988 debut album: Forever Your Girl. It was written and produced by Elliot Wolff. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #2 on the R&B chart, #3 on the Dance Club chart and #39 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The single was certified Platinum by the RIAA. In the US, this was the best-selling single of 1989. "Straight Up" was a popular phrase at the time: "I'll meet you at 6 pm, straight up" or "That was straight up the worst Rocky movie ever", making the song very much in style at the time.
The music video was directed by David Fincher and choreographed by Paula Abdul. "I wanted to tap-dance, and it just came together - very simple", she told Entertainment Weekly. "It ended up defining a look and signature of the decade". The music video also features comedian-actor-talk show host Arsenio Hall, actor Elijah Wood and actor Djimon Hounsou. It won four 1989 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video, Best Editing, Best Choreography, and Best Dance Video.
The sassy single was the breakout hit for Paula Abdul's music career. The song finds Paula Abdul all aflutter over a guy who seems too good to be true. She's been hurt before, so she wants him to be straight up (honest) with her and tell her: does he really love her, or are they just fooling around.
This song was written and produced by Elliot Wolff whose demo tape made its way to Paula Abdul when she was looking for material for her first album. The demo tape was low quality, but Paula Abdul loved the song and convinced her record company to let her record it, which she did in Elliot Wolff's studio apartment.
"I never expected someone who wrote that song to look like you", she told Elliot Wolff, an unassuming white guy with strange mannerisms. Paula Abdul recalls using Elliot Wolff's shower as a vocal booth, and the neighbors banging on the walls to complain. "It was the most enjoyable time working with him because he was so different, and left-of-center", Paula Abdul said of working with Elliot Wolff. "He never would get mad".
Paula Abdul's record company didn't hear the hit potential in the song, and released a song called: "Knocked Out" as her debut single. That was an obvious choice, since it was written and produced by some of the hottest players in the game: Babyface and LA Reid. That one stalled at #41 on the Hot 100 in August 1988. Her next single was "(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me", which topped out at #88 on the Hot 100 in November.
When the San Francisco radio station KMEL started playing her song: "Straight Up", it forced the hand of her record company, which released it as her third single. Her first two singles established Paula Abdul as a dance singer, but the single: "Straight Up", brought her to the next level when it climbed to #1 on the Hot 100 in February 1989. Her next three releases, "Forever Your Girl", "Cold Hearted" and "Opposites Attract" all went to the top of the Hot 100, making her album: Forever Your Girl, one of the most successful debut albums in history.
    Song Credits 📝:

    Lyrics 🗒:
    Lost in a dream
I don't know which way to go
    (A-let me say it)
If you are all that you seem
Then, baby, I'm movin' (movin') way too slow
    I've been a fool before
Wouldn't like to get my love caught in the slammin' door
    How about some information, please?
    Straight up
Now tell me, do you really wanna love me forever
    (Oh, oh, oh)
    Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
    Straight up
Now tell me, is it gonna be you and me together
    (Oh, oh, oh)
Or are you just having fun?
    Time's standing still
    Waiting for some
    (Waiting for some) small clue
    (A-let me tell you know)
    I keep getting chills
When I think your love (when I think your love) is true
    I've been a fool before
Wouldn't like to get my love caught in the slammin' door
    How about some information, please?
    Straight up
Now tell me, do you really wanna love me forever
    (Oh, oh, oh)
    Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
    Straight up
Now tell me, is it gonna be you and me together
    (Oh, oh, oh)
Or are you just having fun?
You are so hard to read
    You play hide-and-seek
    With your true intentions
    If you're only playing games
    I'll just have to say
A-bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye
A-do-do you love me, do-do you love me, baby?
    Come on now
A-do-do you love me, do-do you love me?
    A-tell me, baby
    I've been a fool before
Wouldn't like to get my love caught in the slammin' door
Are you more than hot for me
Or am I a page in your history book?
I don't mean to make demands
But the word and the deed go hand in hand
    How about some information, please?
    (Please, please, ah, please, please)
Straight up, now tell me (tell me)
Straight up, now tell me (tell me)
Straight up, now tell me (tell me)
    Straight up, now tell me
    Straight up, now tell me
    Straight up
Now tell me, do you really wanna love me forever
    (Oh, oh, oh)
    Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
    Straight up
Now tell me, is it gonna be you and me together
    (Oh, oh, oh)
Or are you just having fun?
    Straight up
Now tell me, do you really wanna love me forever
    (Oh, oh, oh)
    Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
    Straight up
Now tell me, is it gonna be you and me together
    (Oh, oh, oh)
Or are you just having fun?

She attended Van Nuys High School, where she was a cheerleader and an honor student. At 15, she received a scholarship to a dance camp near Palm Springs, and in 1978, appeared in the independent musical film: Junior High School. In 1980, she graduated from Van Nuys High School. Within a year, she became head choreographer. She remained with the Laker Girls until 1986.
Paula Abdul was discovered by The Jacksons during her time as a Laker Girl. She was signed to do the choreography for the video to their 1984 single: "Torture". She recalled feeling intimidated by having to tell The Jacksons how to dance, stating that she was "not quite sure how [she] got through that". She was subsequently was chosen to be the choreographer for The Jacksons' 1984 Victory tour. The success of the choreography in the music video and tour led to her career as choreographer of music videos, notably Janet Jackson's: "What Have You Done For Me Lately", "Nasty", "When I Think Of You" and "Control", music videos.
She also choreographed music videos and tours for other artists including: Kool & The Gang, ZZ Top, Toto, Duran Duran, The Pointer Sisters, Angela Winbush, Debbie Gipson, George Michael, Steve Winwood, Taylor Dayne, INXS and more.

Her second album: Spellbound (1991), scored her two more chart-toppers: "Rush Rush" and "The Promise Of A New Day". With six number-one singles on Hot 100, Paula Abdul tied Diana Ross for the third-most chart-toppers among female solo artists at the time.
Following a short musical hiatus while dealing with personal issues, Paula Abdul released her third and final album: Head Over Heels, in 1995. Three singles were released from the album: "My Love Is For Real", was the only Top 40 single from the album, peaking at number 28 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Dance Club chart. The last single from the album: "Ain't Never Gonna Give You Up", reached number 12 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart.

Paula and Arsenio Hall dated from 1988 to 1989. They were dating when this song was released in 1988 so she may have talked him into doing a bit part in the music video. She was a dancer before becoming an LA Laker's cheerleader and tap dancing was her favorite jam. Aside from Janet Jackson music videos, Paula also choreographed the Running Man game show dancers in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film, "The Running Man". Her work on that film truly showcased her talent. 🙂

She was/is a very talented dancer (and choreographer), no doubt about that. The rest of her career was her image, she really cannot sing well. She's flat on her own records.
