As long as you're not racing, the answer to most such questions is 'yes'.

Bought my proper bike, a Cannondale Topstone 5 Carbon, I am genuienly blown away by this bike, the range of 2 by, I absolutely love the road bike handle bars and the ability to shred in the dirt, bravo for the gravel bike movement.

This was my intention when I was getting my first gravel bike. To have one bike to fit all my rides. So I got myself Canyon Grail with 2by drivetrain and set of Fulcrum Racing DB5 wheels. I even opted for 11 - 28 cassette for roadwheels since I ride mostly flats. so having 2by gravel bike with more or less equal geometry to endurance bike of same brand with extra wheelset is totally equal having two bikes to me. Usually after heavy rainfalls I go for pure tarmac spin, though having 28mm tires still gives me an option to take shortcut via unpaved road or path. Narrow road tires fitted to bike with 42mm tire clearance look a bit awkward, but hey.. you dont have bike for looking at it. Grail on roadwheels feels great, nimble responsive and most importantly to me, comfy.

I second this. I bought the Di2 Grail and an extra set of wheels and I am ready to go. I do have other bikes as well S-Works SL3 Tarmac, Giant OCR aluminium frame with 10 speed Ultegra for commuting, Giant TCR Advanced T-Mobile, the pink and black team bike, and a 1982 Raleigh Corsa with Dura-Ace 7800 and down tube shifters and ridiculously expensive tubular wheels but the Grail has become my go to bike

Merida Silex 400 2018, 48/32 Chainring; Merida Comp SL Gravel wheelset rolling on Maxxis Razzo 35mm, Shimano 11-34 cassette and 105 chain; DT-Swiss 470db rolling on WTB Exposure Tubeless 36mm sleeks, Shimano 11-28 Cassette and Ultegra chain. Bike setup is sweet for all my riding abilities and needs. Didn't break the bank either.

@@samuelkmaina That does sound like a great bang for buck combo. Well thought-out. But tyre widths are wide on your road tyre? And you could go wider for your off road tyre? But that just shows how versatile your setup is. I was going to get a gravel bike but was shocked at how great my commuter felt when I just put on some 40mm schwalbe G Ones on it and went tubeless for lower pressure. New gravel bike. Done.

@@liamconnor99 I love comfort hence the wide road tyres. I initially had 26mm Specialised Turbos, they are fast in places but a very hard ride. Gravel biking is about adventure not suffering. Interestingly my average speed hasn't suffered. I guess the difference is more noticeable on much higher speeds.

I hav head one for about a year (E5 Comp) and I imagine you are have a hoot as well. LOVE mine...all gravel, all day every day...BUT...mine came with Pathfinder 38's, and thinking of swapping out for 32's or 28's...the trails here are fairly hard packed and fast rolling, so no issues there...I keep them up around 60 psi as well..but when I take it on the road, it is a bit of a chore to get up to speed and maintain. Ya..I know..38's? duh. Any recommendations or experience?

Great video! I basically did the same thing: Since my road bike lives on the turbo in autumn/winter, I got myself a set of 50mm deep carbon wheels with 28mm road tyres for my gravel bike to still be able to ride outside as well (also didn't want to do such an upgrade to my 10 year old rim brake road bike). I noticed that I'm faster now with my gravel bike compared to the shallow wheel setup on my road bike! Gear ratios are also not the biggest problem since the gravel bike has a 2x11 GRX800, so compared to a 50-11as biggest gear, it's 48-11, which is noticeable but in most circumstances it's absolutely fine!

I basically ride an 11-24 cassette with HED Jet-55s and Conti GP5000TLs on the road and 11-36 with HED Ardennes and Gravel King SK 32s on gravel. I've ridden this frame 4,500 miles - only about 500 off road. I have no trouble riding with A groups averaging 22mph and riding Strava segments over 35mph. I also lead tours at slower speed and ride some gravel. The Aspero is definitely a true all-road bicycle.

And then my Road set up is a 50/34 crankset with a 11-30 cassette with 30 mm Continental Grand Prix 5000 tires. thanks, you solidfy what I experienced... I took my gravel on a group ride near Austin, TX a few years back, and even though I had road tires on my gravel bike, it just felt substantially hard, due to the "rolling hills effect" as you mentioned. Austin is up and down back to back, rolling hills... so weight does matter. Aero always matters, and optimization equals specificity. But for non racers... it will work just fine.

@@renehaitjema7841 Mechanically, a fixed gear is more efficient as far as power losses go. You get more out of what you put in and the inertia of the spinning wheel is a real bonus on climbs. That doesn't have much to do with winter.
Besides the simplicity, reliability and very little maintenance in the slopiest months, pedaling always is a great workout and it keeps you warmer due to never coasting. You get a better workout in a shorter period of time. Fixed gears and pedaling always naturally teaches you to pedal properly in circles, instead of simply pushing the pedals. You'd soon realize you have lots more muscles in your legs to put more power to the wheels. Professional road riders used to train fixed often in winter to keep their legs supple. Google the French term 'souplesse'. It refers to a smoothness and expertise in pedaling. Pedaling always builds endurance and stamina. Pedaling always in hilly terrain will train you to pedal at all different cadences and develop muscles you never knew you had.
A single speed will encourage you to pick better lines through obstacles, maintain your momentum better and you are much more aware of what you do on the bike. A lack of gearS forces the rider to concentrate and make a better effort.
A fixed gear allows you to control your speed with your feet and avoid braking too much. In low traction situations such as dirt, sand rain, snow and mud, even ice, a fixed gear gives you a much better sense of traction.

I pretty much solved the problem by changing my 12 speed 10/50 SRAM cassette to a 9/46 E*thirteen cassette (42T chainring) - you sacrifice very little in the climb but gain 10% on the top end - that may not seem like much but it's actually very significant when riding downhill or with a good tailwind.

I would agree. With a carbon frame, a double chainring and a set of carbon wheels there really isn't much difference other than the road bike frame is probably more aero. I think you are right about the limitations of the single ring set up for descending. The only problem I've found with the additional set of road wheels is brake disc rub on the road set so tend to just stick to the gravel wheels.

What size chainring you got on there?
I'm finding the single bike setup is working well for me... I always used to love my road bike, but since getting a gravel bike I often found myself tempted by little trails or interesting looking back roads and farm roads. I've now got two sets of wheels - and both with 38mm tyres - one set of knobbles and one set of slicks. The slicks for road rides... roll plenty quick enough to not feel sluggish but still got the cushion for a bit of off road if something tempts me. I also sometimes lower my stem by 10 or 15mm for lengthy road rides, to get a touch more aero.

hey dave, great video again. you mentioned in the last few minutes having a gravel bike wiith an extra set of wheels is a good compromise.. you also said if you swapped chainring out you sacrifice gearing, but what about having a 2x front cog, perhaps running GRX, on a gravel bike, with a set of road wheels, would this solve all the issues? Is having 1x for gravel more beneficial than having a 2x that could be perfect for both road and gravel (but comes wiith extra weightt, maintenance, and less of a clean look)... Genuinely curious, love road riding, love off road, cant afford both.... Seems like my perfect option would be a road biased gravel frame with GRX 2x or even 105, and a sett of 650B for gravel, and some 56mm deep clinchers for the road. all in one bikes are supposed to be all you need, but its impossible when you love really gravely gravel bikes and really roady road bikes.. thanks again for the video

I have now a few wheel sets, different tires & gear ratios, for my road & commuter bikes. Takes me less time going to work than using a car (traffic) & stay healthier at 66. Some NYC streets are no smoother than a gravel trail. Couldn't care about clubs. In 2, model RR & bike clubs. Was also in a car club,. Hi dave - thanks for this useful vid. I grew up in moreton so know the doccombe climb well :-) Considering this option as well at the moment (a gravel bike with some separate lighter road wheels to run on it) partly as the hills around east devon are killer but also because of it being almost impossible to get road bike stock at the moment. I did the same thing, put 32mm road tires on my gravel bike, and it rides remarkably well on roads. It's basically an endurance road bike with decent fender mounts. It's not as fast as a true road bike, but it's fast enough if you're not racing, and totally fun to ride. Plus, if you want to ride on dirt, just swap out the wheels and you're good to go!

Ich ride a Cube Cross Race C62 SL CX bike (1×).
I think for most people it is the perfect compromise. The geometry is closer to a road bike than a gravel bike would be. But so think most people don't ride their gravel bikes in XC terrain / on single trails anyway, so they don't need the smaller head tube angle or being able to fit 650B 2.1".
I have a 700x40mm Schwalbe G-One bite wheelset and one Speedsafe (Chinese carbon) 45mm deep road wheelset with 25mm GP 5000s. Gravel wheelset has a 11-40, while the road wheels have 11-36.
I own two chain rings, a 38 (gravel) and a 40 (road). It all runs with the same chain and a medium size cage.
Couldn't be more happy with the range of stuff I can ride with that.

I ride my gravel cannondale topstone 105 alloy with my friends who all have carbon aero road bikes. Always faster than them up climbs and long rides even though I have a weight, aero, and geometry disadvantage. I definitely have to put in more watts (as the frame is also much too big for me and I run gravel tires on it not road), but I still manage to be a fast rider. In essence, you can use a gravel bike with gravel tires as a road bike. It'll make you a stronger rider and for normal rides that don't race, a gravel bike is more than enough.

A resounding yes from me Dave. It's not the ball it's the pitcher. Same with cycling. I bet unless it's a fixed gear you could race your gravel bike in a crit with proper tyres. And yeah I wanted the GRX crank for a while but couldn’t justify it. Yet stages power meters make a dedicated GrX for like $250 which is cheaper than most and so if I do grx I could get a power meeter cheap so it worked out!
Then right now one project I’m working on is how to get cheap high engagement gravel wheels. I picked up a $350 dt swiss spline 1800 wheelset with 24 mm internal width which is much better than the 21mm stock as I’m running 42mm pathfinder tires (highly recommend these btw hands down great grip, don’t wear out fast, and on road they have a like roadbike fastrolling center I’ve been keeping up with roadbikers and peaking 34mph flat kind of best of both worlds). Anyways the cheap dt swiss wheel comes with their cheap 370 hub and I’m looking to swap in the 240 or something else with the star ratchet system to do the 54 star ratchet upgrade.

Today I was overtaken by a lighter, younger and stronger man on a racebike. He got 20 meters instantly. I tried to close the gap and did hold 20-30-20-30 meters for ca 3 km, and then an uphill came, and he disappeared. There vere several factors in his advantage. Fitness, bikeweight, tyres and gear ratio did matter. I was for more than a kilometer at my cadence limit with heaviest 40-11 gear. The weight of innertube, suspensionfork , larger tyres, aluminiumwheels and dropperpost gives this gravelbike 3 kg extra. I am considering a set-up that is more road-fast, and that is uprgrading from 1x11 to 2x 11 gear and swopping tyres from 44mm with tube to 37 mm tubeless. I guess this would have closed that 20 meter gap, but he would got away up the hill anyway. Maybe this upgrade is a bad idea. I dont need to go faster and ther will be a penalty for smaller tyres on the gravelroad. And it is nice to avoid front-gear.
