Rescued some garlic from my neighbors yard who passed 2 years ago. The idiots working on the property just mowed down the garlic, so I went over and dug up as much as I could. Planted in grow bags last fall, no where else to put it. Harvested about 10 days ago, turned out pretty good, in hind sight I should have amended the bags, had cucumbers growing all summer. I do not know the varieties of garlic, some are kinda purple, just naming it all Martin. So many videos on harvesting and curing garlic, yours was the most clear and precise. Why I did not seek this video out sooner is beyond me. Garlic is still curing, gave some away and will find a better home for it this fall. Enjoy your videos! Stay Well!!!!
You answered all of my questions. Thank you. I was so impressed with the clear and helpful advice that I liked and subscribed. This was my first visit to your channel.
Thank you, Jenna. Your video has the best information and pictures that I have found. Simple and to the point. I am a senior woman living in a senior community that I am fortunate enough to be able to garden. My challenge is the drying space. I have around 100 plants and I think I found a place to dry them. HAPPY ME.
Your neighbors from Ontario say Thank You! Great suggestions...I had just harvested my first batch, and as they were drying in the hot sun (ten mins) I literally ran 🏃♂️ out and now they rest in the shed with their fan :)😅
Definitely helpful content for me. I recently harvested my Hardneck Garlic (1st time). I washed off the dirt before putting to dry. I saw a video that stated that you should never wash or get the garlic wet 😞. I am in Zone 6b, planted my garlic in early November and harvested in mid July.
I have dipped my harneck bulbs quickly to remove most soil before drying indoors on an upstairs railing & haven't had any problems with storing through the winter👍🧄Planted in Nov & will harvest in early August 🧄👍
Great video. The first video I watched which came up higher on youtube, the person clearly has never done it before but she thinks putting out a how-to video is perfectly acceptable.
Thank you for sharing this! My first year growing garlic, also here in Ohio. I grew it in a 4’x8’ raised bed and now have ~150 bulbs of garlic hanging and curing in our garage with about 80 shallots planted in a similar bed at the same time last fall. Checking this as refresher to make sure I remember when curing is done and what comes next. Very helpful, thank you!
Jenna, thanks for the Ohio zone 6 video on garlic. I live in NE Stark County and it is mostly in 6B. late October in '23 I planted hard neck garlic in a raised bed. It's now 6/24/24 and not ready yet. I feel that I should wait until around mid July to harvest. I cut off the scapes 2 weeks ago. Well done on your video, one of the very best among the numerous garlic blogs. So happy to hear from an experienced garlic grower in Ohio.

@@GrowfullywithJenna i harvest one from 3 different containers and they were tiny but I’m confused bc the leaf/ stalk has dead leaves in the bottom and they are fallen over not straight up anymore like before.
Yes our garlic is early this year. It fell over and I picked a few The cloves aren't very big yet. Kept garlic all last winter and still have a little left from last year. The extreme heat must have made it bolt. Going to hold off picking until beginning of July.
My garlic has seemed strange. I was thinking that I should be harvesting it, but it wasn't ready when I checked, but that has been a few weeks. I kinda forgot about it. We just got a soaker of a rain today, but I may try digging around one tomorrow to see how things are going. YOU have a LOT of garlic! 😍 My dozen garlic won't be much to deal with. lol
@@GrowfullywithJenna Yes I did and it was perfect. It's been curing for the last week or so. It's not much compared to what those of you with established gardens have, but it was what I could get in the ground fast before winter last year. On another note, my tomato trellis collapsed today. 😞 I'm amazed at how many huge tomatoes are on these plants, the the top pole just bent and then it eventually fell over. I'll try to prop it up tomorrow when it's not 90 out. I can't drive a stake in my ground here because of too many rocks.
Hello Jenna, Thank you for the information concerning garlic. The last time I wrote I shared the idea of electrical fence to keep critters out of the garden. It still works for me and if you tried it I hope it worked for you. Also we spoke of growing potatoes in a container. I used a 55 gal plastic barrel cut to 1/3. It appears to be working. Also planted in extended garden area just in case. This process is never ending when it comes to learning, but I love it and thanks to people like you sharing your knowledge has made it doable.
You are spot on! The process is indeed neverending, but I also love it! I'm glad to hear the potato planter appears to be working. I hope you have a great harvest!
Hello Jenna, harvested the garlic today and I am very thankful for your classroom education knowledge. The garlic looks amazing and the wife is very happy as we are garlic lovers. Will continue to follow your information on drying and storing. Once again, thank you.
Great video indeed. A question for all you garlic growers. Some of the garlic in this video are purple in colour and some are just well the normal garlic colour. Is the purple drying or more cured than the garlic that is as I’m saying garlic colour ? I’ve been told the purple has been dried longer. Thanks in advance for any and all answers
Great question! The reason you're seeing variance in color is due to the different varieties I grow. Some do have a tinge of rosy or purple color and some actually have purple stripes (examples include Deerfield Purple, Chesnok Red, Purple Glazer and others). It has nothing to do with the length of drying time.
I have much more garlic to harvest this year but I got kinda ahead of myself and pulled half of it a little early. I had planted raspberries in that bed, (it was the best bed for it) and I noticed that the raspberry near the garlic wasn't growing as well as the others so I pulled some. I probably shouldn't have pulled as much as I did however. AND of course the weather (15% chance of rain) turned into 70 % chance since this morning and it rained on the garlic I had laid out outside. It's hanging up on my porch now, dry warm and with air flow. Lets see how different the rest I am leaving in will be in a few weeks.
Chicken Johnny thank you! You absolutely should try some garlic this year! I love it because it’s an ‘off-season’ crop and overall is fairly easy to grow. I hope you try it!
Thanks Regina! The wife and I live on the side of a hill near Athens. So, rock and clay. I've dug literally tons of rock out of my garden beds, added some sand (not too much) and I cover everything in the fall with leaves except for the beds that I plant clover in (green mulch). Just getting serious about gardening which is why I subscribed to your channel. You are a very good teacher who doesn't assume that I know too much. What part of Ohio do you live in?

Hi Jenna, do you use your barn mostly for harvest storage? Sounds silly but I would love to see a tour of your lovely barn 😊And thanks again for such an informative lesson on garlic!

I have my garlic in my basement in Michigan next to a humidifier, in a veggie cardboard box from Costco all spread out! Will that be okay or should I spread them out more? Thanks again for your help!
Thanks for this great video, Jenna...very informative and helpful. I have a question regarding some of the bulbs I harvested...some of the outer cloves were individually exposed, while the inner layer was fully covered. What would cause that to happen? I would attach photos but can't figure out how! Thanks in advance for your help.
I'd definitely wait, late October to early-November would be your best bet. You want to give the bulbs just enough time to get some roots established before they go into the cold, semi-dormant period of winter. If you plant too early you end up with too much tender, green top growth going into winter, making them susceptible to cold damage & stunted bulb growth.

Two sites state different opinions on when to cut o ff the stems. One states before currying, one states after. Another issue sites offer opposing opinions is planting: with skin or without skins on. Either is correct but which is better and why?
I always leave stems on when curing and skins on when planting. My gut is this offers more protection from potential pathogens entering (particularly the stem thing), but I've not done any testing to prove this.
I've not personally tried this, Michele, but as long as they are in a single layer, with good air circulation and in a warm, dry room, I suspect this should work.
