Yea ur allowed to ban them And like black and blue said, the only megas that break the game are the ones that are sitting in ubers (banned essentially). From the info I've gathered it seems the main argument as to why they shouldn't return is they're broken. But the Broken megas of the game are only allowed in Vgc. And that's purely because vgc only bans absurdly powerful legendaries. On Smogon those op megas are banned. It baffles me why they think game freak would get rid of the gimmick that got a lot of fans back into pokemon. It's just not good for business. I don't think Z moves are replacing megas at all, they're just offering a new playstyle for people who might not want to use megas.
I think it'll make sense if you have the option to switch between z moves and mega evolutions. For example, you can either equip the Gengar z move crystal or the Gengarite to the trainer's bracelet.
What I'm hoping to see with the Z-Stones is that they give a small stat boost (like Mega Evolutions but not as extreme), but the boost is lost when you use the Z-move. That way you can be more strategic with the Z-move while retaining the utility that Mega Evolution brought to mons that need it to stay competitive. And some kind of heads up to know which mon had the Z-stone would be appreciated, but not necessary.
A good back story for alolan raichu is that a bunch of surfing pikachus from kanto surfed all the way to kalos and on their way there they were caught in a storm and that once they woke up they had realized that they have evolved due to the exposure of the lightning from the storm and they realized that they couldn't surf anymore once they evolved so they evolved into alolan raichu to be able to surf. Idk anymore
That's actually amazing that they have that backstory for rattata. That actually happens in Hawaii (more specifically Maui), they have had to release mongoose to control small rodents. You see those little mongoose all over the place!
I reckon it's more than likely that Megas are hanging around. They probably won't be part of the story and the new vgc rules might outlaw them, but I think there might be another after story (like the Delta Ep) that allows Mega use after you beat the game (like DLC). I'm thinking that it might be a scenario where you choose though, between Mega or Z-move -- kinda like choosing between Mach and Acro in R/S/E -- and you can only have the bracelet for one at a time.
If Charizard has two megas (x&y) z may just be reserved for z moves, making you chose between buffed pokemon or superpowered moves (this would maybe explain why gengar wasnt mega when he used his move?)
Maybe they are not holding our hands. maybe it balances out because items are more expensive in alola, including pokeballs, so catching is more critical. those two moves could help if you don't like a challenge.
It's just like with Torchic with Blazikenite in X and Y. From release there was a window of like 3 months to claim a mystery gift that had the Torchic holding the mega stone. So this time for roughly the same amount of time, the game will have Munchlax holding the new item as a mystery gift. So unless your hold off several months buying the game you'll easily get it
I strongly feel Megas are a game mechanic that will forever follow the main games. By the looks of it there won't be any new ones but the old ones I'm sure will return. The Z-Moves and crystals is Sun and Moon's spice and that is interesting and cool. The Mega Stones will be kept just wait; other mechanics from exclusive games have been kept like Sky Forme Shaymin, Origin Forme Giratina, all Deoxys Formes, Light Ball breeding for Volt Tackle, Insence breeding for baby Pokemon, and I know there are others. Those Formes could of easily been canned but they kept them in.
dark normal has a perfect neutral covarage with its stab moves, if has a good speed stat and still has excess to swords dances with a decent atk stat this thing could be very hard to counter, barring a steel fairy type, so a good move set might be swords dance sucker punch/or crunch and last resort maybe tech on reversal with a focus sash and it could be very hard pokemon to deal with as very few pokemon so far get mach punch and whilst fight does reck it if it has enough speed to out pace most of its comp, it could be the stand out alolan form like kangaskhan became the stand out mega. (i.e the one noone though would be that good and just ends up on most teams.)
vacuum wave is a move tutor in gen 4 hgss and is only natural learned by scyther and hitmonchan (which both have terrible special attack stats) and can be breed to croagunk riolu and tyrogue, so the only real ones you will see running vacuum wave are croagunk/toxicroak and riolu/lucario. lucario has 4 slot syndrome as it is and vacuum wave doesnt really do much for it, same with toxicroak.
So one thing to point out. Megas are all but confirmed to be in the game, with a very high chance of new megas being added. Its been announced that new mega pokemon merchandise will be added in early 2017, which likely means that its probably going to be plushies of what ever new megas are being added. So here's hope that we see one of them on the 6th with our next batch of info. All of this coming from Serebii Joe.
Would this confirm that items are required to use Z-moves? It would make sense to me that you can't have a Pokemon that has both a Z-move and a mega evolution, but could have one Pokemon that can mega-evolve and another that will have access to Z-moves. After all, each Pokemon can only hold 1 item.
The bit about Rattatas and Yungoos really seem funny just because of what happens with their evolutions. It says Alolan Rattata are led by an Alolan Raticate "boss", which makes me think crime boss, and Yungoos's evolution, Gumshoo is supposed to be a "gumshoe", or a detective. Does anyone else realize that Yungoos pretty much confirms another region? If they aren't native to Alola, where did they originate? The obviously didn't come from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, or Kalos, seeing as not one Yungoos has been spotted anywhere there. So this just asks the question... @shofu don't you think Z moves could just be given to pokemon who don't actually need a mega evolution, because their stats or typing are already viable? Maybe they are just for pokemon that need that little bit of buffing to get them into their proper tier without giving them a full on mega, because the mega would make them either too good, or be the shittiest mega ever because it barely does anything more than the base form. I personally think its a new balancing concept to prevent every pokemon from just receiving a mega otherwise the power creep in pokemon would just scale up and out of control.

these special moves ARE mega evolutions, if we look at it interms of mechanics they moved the programming to moves, now the question is will they do it for Held items next? game freak has always been turning abilities to moves and pokemon moves to items etc etc they always shuffle them around e.g focus sash is the sturdy equivalent
Well mega evolution came about due to the use of Xerneas energy during the war so there might have been a max range on how many regions were affected by it. I really would like to see a few more megas but at the same time it wouldn't be all that unusual if we didn't see them pop up in every region.

I reckon it's more than likely that Megas are hanging around. They probably won't be part of the story and the new vgc rules might outlaw them, but I think there might be another after story (like the Delta Ep) that allows Mega use after you beat the game (like DLC).
I'm thinking that it might be a scenario where you choose though, between Mega or Z-move -- kinda like choosing between Mach and Acro in R/S/E -- and you can only have the bracelet for one at a time.
If Charizard has two megas (x&y) z may just be reserved for z moves, making you chose between buffed pokemon or superpowered moves (this would maybe explain why gengar wasnt mega when he used his move?)

Maybe they are not holding our hands. maybe it balances out because items are more expensive in alola, including pokeballs, so catching is more critical. those two moves could help if you don't like a challenge.

It's just like with Torchic with Blazikenite in X and Y. From release there was a window of like 3 months to claim a mystery gift that had the Torchic holding the mega stone. So this time for roughly the same amount of time, the game will have Munchlax holding the new item as a mystery gift. So unless your hold off several months buying the game you'll easily get it
I strongly feel Megas are a game mechanic that will forever follow the main games. By the looks of it there won't be any new ones but the old ones I'm sure will return. The Z-Moves and crystals is Sun and Moon's spice and that is interesting and cool. The Mega Stones will be kept just wait; other mechanics from exclusive games have been kept like Sky Forme Shaymin, Origin Forme Giratina, all Deoxys Formes, Light Ball breeding for Volt Tackle, Insence breeding for baby Pokemon, and I know there are others. Those Formes could of easily been canned but they kept them in.

dark normal has a perfect neutral covarage with its stab moves, if has a good speed stat and still has excess to swords dances with a decent atk stat this thing could be very hard to counter, barring a steel fairy type, so a good move set might be swords dance sucker punch/or crunch and last resort maybe tech on reversal with a focus sash and it could be very hard pokemon to deal with as very few pokemon so far get mach punch and whilst fight does reck it if it has enough speed to out pace most of its comp, it could be the stand out alolan form like kangaskhan became the stand out mega. (i.e the one noone though would be that good and just ends up on most teams.)

vacuum wave is a move tutor in gen 4 hgss and is only natural learned by scyther and hitmonchan (which both have terrible special attack stats) and can be breed to croagunk riolu and tyrogue, so the only real ones you will see running vacuum wave are croagunk/toxicroak and riolu/lucario. lucario has 4 slot syndrome as it is and vacuum wave doesnt really do much for it, same with toxicroak.
The shiny metang in ORAS also had Hold Back.

So one thing to point out. Megas are all but confirmed to be in the game, with a very high chance of new megas being added. Its been announced that new mega pokemon merchandise will be added in early 2017, which likely means that its probably going to be plushies of what ever new megas are being added. So here's hope that we see one of them on the 6th with our next batch of info. All of this coming from Serebii Joe.

Metagross was able to learn Hold Back in ORAS. Also, happy hour is basically just the amulet coin in move form.
I don't see them getting rid of Mega Evolutions, but they might not be obtainable till the post game, as some sort of import from Kalos.
Would this confirm that items are required to use Z-moves? It would make sense to me that you can't have a Pokemon that has both a Z-move and a mega evolution, but could have one Pokemon that can mega-evolve and another that will have access to Z-moves. After all, each Pokemon can only hold 1 item.

The bit about Rattatas and Yungoos really seem funny just because of what happens with their evolutions. It says Alolan Rattata are led by an Alolan Raticate "boss", which makes me think crime boss, and Yungoos's evolution, Gumshoo is supposed to be a "gumshoe", or a detective. So we have detectives vs crimelords here. They better make raticate look like the godfather or scarface

Does anyone else realize that Yungoos pretty much confirms another region? If they aren't native to Alola, where did they originate? The obviously didn't come from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, or Kalos, seeing as not one Yungoos has been spotted anywhere there. So this just asks the question... What region are they native to? Gen 8 confirmed?

don't you think Z moves could just be given to pokemon who don't actually need a mega evolution, because their stats or typing are already viable? Maybe they are just for pokemon that need that little bit of buffing to get them into their proper tier without giving them a full on mega, because the mega would make them either too good, or be the shittiest mega ever because it barely does anything more than the base form.
I personally think its a new balancing concept to prevent every pokemon from just receiving a mega otherwise the power creep in pokemon would just scale up and out of control.

these special moves ARE mega evolutions, if we look at it interms of mechanics they moved the programming to moves, now the question is will they do it for Held items next? game freak has always been turning abilities to moves and pokemon moves to items etc etc they always shuffle them around e.g focus sash is the sturdy equivalent
Well mega evolution came about due to the use of Xerneas energy during the war so there might have been a max range on how many regions were affected by it. I really would like to see a few more megas but at the same time it wouldn't be all that unusual if we didn't see them pop up in every region.
