I love how my uncle (he's wealthy) bought a designer made apartment very much like this one, and he requested technologically advanced furniture. When me and my sisters went to stay there, I noticed a beautiful murphy bed just like these. And so I told him "Wow this is amazing" as I deployed the bed. He suddenly looks at me with a gaze of awe and says "Holy shit, how did you do that", and I noticed he was holding an inflatable bed he had bought not knowing anything about this. That weekend I found and showed him other five functionalities of other furniture he didn't know about.

These are cool, but the fact that they are so expensive defeats the purpose, those who can afford to fill there apartment with this kind of furniture can also probably afford more space. Maybe they could be cool toys for rich people in there Manhattan condos, but not space saving furniture for typical urban families/renters.

While I love seeing this great utilization of space, I hate knowing that this is going to be the justification for even higher costs of living for people in urban areas.
"Yes, it may only be 400 sq ft. of floor space, but it ACTS like you have 1000 sq ft., so that's what you're paying for". It'll be a clever way for people to pay more for less.
People will remember the "good old days" when they used to be able to afford an apartment that had a living room AND a bedroom.

Think about it though, space saving doesn't have to cost a ton. You can get a futon for like $200 at Ikea and lots of other space saving pieces for cheap. When I got married 8 years ago we went to Ikea because it was all we could afford. We still go to Ikea because you get good value for space saving furniture, it helps when you live in LA.

Yeah. There are different groups of people and the group that would go through the motions of transforming the beds daily is prolly smaller than the group who would get tired of doing it.
The sell pitch needs to reflect that, dropping the drama the bed space is 'dead'.

It is the leftist assumption and world view of the pressenter in the beginning that people don't agree with. Also, this set up works best for single or un married couples. Other than that it becomes old and uncomfarotable quickly. Much rather live in an RV.

Now, I love this furniture. It is fun if this is what you want for getaway in the city or a small space, or room conversions for the occcational desk or divorced weekend parenting. But it is not ideal for a permantnt living situation, unless you are one or two people.
A family should not have to go through constant conversions to utilize their space. It is not practica and it lacks privacy. If someone is tired or sick and wants to be in bed, and your partners wants to use the desk for work then you are in each others way just trying to live in the most comfortable respects.
I bleme snobby, upper class, elitist trying to push Agend 21 thinking of craming humans in to tiny spaces. These nut jobs don't want poorer people to own anything, so they can control society much easier. After all if you own next to nothing your whole livihood is dependent on someone else with a lot more resources to provide for you. The extreme rich can afford to buy where-ever they want. Money is not an issue. They would live in these tiny dwelling just for fun but not a a permanent situation in life themselves. What is untrue about what he's said? And what makes this leftist and condescending? (A really annoying jab by the way.) In a world that's getting more crowded, housing costs are ridiculous everywhere regardless of budget. And most people in the world don't just expect to live in 2500 sq ft of living space for 4 or 5 people. So if you compare standards of living it is, in fact, rather selfish what we insist upon and even call decent sized housing. Just because you don't see that kind of thing from your own window doesnt mean it isnt there.
Lets just stop assuming its our right to sprawl out everywhere. By the way its also killing us. It has us on the never ending hamster wheel of the American dream...working yourself to death to buy a house and fill it with shit you don't need that you don't have time to use because we are working so hard to keep the house and keep the utilities on to heat and cool rooms that no one is home to use...enough really.
So why can't small housing be perfectly acceptable esp if this guy is showing you how to do it? You don't have to buy his stuff. Just be inspired by it. Also he's not saying ev needs to bunk up 20 people deep in studio apartments to use his furniture. What he's saying is that when people are sleeping they aren't using other pieces of furniture and don't need access to storage. So if you can make a convertible bed that gives you daytime then you have more room to play and work, and store your stuff. That room is better utilized so you can live comfortably in smaller housing. That's spreading out without needing more house.
I do agree that a lot of tiny house type of design is ridiculously hard to use. I would not enjoy playing Tetris all day either but again this stuff is counterweighted and everything so its really not that hard. I would also like to hear more about safety features. Can stuff fall on a child? Can it pinch small fingers? Can you get stuck inside a piece of furniture? But he shows you how to use his bed units for day and night and how to use everyday pieces for a gathering of more people. So its not like you are flipping things around all the time. If its just a couple steps here and there, what's the big deal?
The point is scaling back and using everything we have more efficiently is important. It can really really liberate a family or anyone feeling like a worker bee with noting to show for it. If you have spaces and pieces (both in terms of furniture and other items) that are versatile by reliable and high quality, then you use them more so less becomes more. You can live comfortably in a smaller space that is easier to take care of and easier of pay for. If you are wanting to improve or grow, you can have a smaller house but a better house. Or a smaller house in a better neighborhood. Or a smaller house and use the money differently or save it and retire sooner. Or a smaller house and work less hours and have more free time. Or a smaller house that's harder to outgrow if you want another baby or if granny moves in. Etc etc. Its just a really easy way to improve your life. I don't see what makes that political. All this guy really said was...if you want the good life figure out what matters and do it efficiently.

are needed in big cities where housing accommodation is at sky high rate.

@@RichardChappell1 But when you move you can take the furniture with you, so the investment compounds with every move you make where you don't need as much space as you would otherwise have needed. Or if your kids are now teenagers but you can't afford to move to obtain more space so everyone isn't on top of each other.
1) furniture deteriorates with use - and in particular moves. If move more than a couple of times, your investment has little value.
2) If you can't afford more space, then you can't afford this furniture.

The couch/bed and table/desk/bed have been on the market for decades. They are what this guy refers to as 'clunky.' These types of units are in use in timeshares/hotels/etc. Check out a studio at Polo Towers in Las Vegas, for example.

This is great! I actually spotted the exact solution for me in this video. :) Being able to turn anything into a bed means being able to have a friend be your roomate (for some low rent, muahaha), have your spouse move in, have your kid move in, have another move in... You can calmly make the investment of buying a home you'll use for a looong time. :)
And there's more space for dancing, YAY!
I have a sweater that can be used on both sides, turn it inside out and voila, a new sweater. Makes me feel kinda smart. I also have curtains that can work as a table cloth if I lay it down on the table top. My toothbrush can also be used as drumsticks for my collapsible mini drum kit - AND my car (a mini of course) is a transformer! Now beat that.
I LOVE the duplicity of these items. I had an old fashioned Murphy bed in my single apartment and loved that I didn't have to make it - just fold it away. These are even better than that because there's continued functionality when the bed is folded away.
That dining room table that folds out is pretty cool.

This is exactly what I'm looking for! I'm moving to very small space. I've looked at day beds, hydraulic mattresses to store stuff under the bed, murphy beds but I still need to build shelves to utilize the vertical space in my very tiny odd shaped bedroom. The cost of materials, hiring someone to build for me is not cost effective. I'm happy to support this company! They have created a niche market and creating employment. I'm also self employed and applaud any company willing to take the risk and financial investment in trying something new! Looking at options now! wish me luck! :)
This stuff is cute. But it's also a sad statement on the fact that real-estate prices have become so outrageous that people are now being forced into these tiny, cramped boxes, made from the cheapest materials which leads them to resort to these measures to compensate.

No, it's partly because so many people want large homes that we're in our current situation. I'm Australia, cities don't stop sprawling out because everyone is so he'll bent on getting a house. So it becomes the norm to have a long commute, living in places with crappy urban planning, easily wasting 4 hours on transport everyday, adding to stress and pollution. Obviously there are many other factors at play in the price increase, like the advent of airbnb-like services, regulations that favour investors over live-in owners or no regulations on rental prices. But people need to realise we need to more densely. It's better for the environment and for people's health (long commutes bring about a whole host of physical, mental and emotional problems).
@@miyounova While I would NOT be able to enjoy living in a city and actually see my commute as relaxing even (especially with the motorcycle) there is some truth in that. I wonder how people will live in 10k years. :)
@@kontoname fair enough, but for a lot of people 2h commute every morning and then 2h back is not sustainable. If you work in Australia, 38h a week, and 4h commute 5 days a week, it eats your life up. Imagine if you work a bit longer than that as well. Although to be fair, with long commutes, even if you worked 35h a week, which is the shortest full time I know of, it'd still be difficult.

By the time you finance this furntiture the monthly payments means you could have lived in a biggar space. After all the makers of this furniture want top dollar and could care less about being reasonable.

Fun and clever, but not practical. How long before the hinges and mechanisms start to break? Is it feasable for a household to live 100% tidy at all times? No leaving work on the desk to finish in the morning, because the bed folds down onto that desk.
I would also be very nervous around furniture that tips up (and comes down!) at the lightest touch.
An ingenious home, and perfect so long as you are tall, slim, able-bodied, super-organised and neat; and only ever entertain guests who are also tall, slim, and equally tidy. I do take offence at being called selfish and wasteful simply I can't use (or afford, frankly) this particular version of an Ideal Home.
Looks like we won't be going to work anytime soon.

I think it’s a fantastic idea.we are creating similar at our cottage for extra guests, flip bed down from wall. Similar to Murphy. Love almost everything about this saving space way of life. Especially with many people I know wanting to live life free of “stuff”.
those beds are only really useful for spare bedrooms though because otherwise you have to remake them every night, which very few people will have the patience to do

Welllllll, the problem he brings up is that with the growing population, we are becoming tighter on space. hence space saving furniture... thus allowing for a larger population-> more consumption -> more "carbon footprint".... so in perspective.... the exact opposite of what you want is happening. Its cool stuff, but if you want an answer to a global crisis, it is certainly not a bunch of friggin murphy beds.

The only piece of furniture that may be truly needed is either a daybed or futon couch. All items can be stored in pull-out baskets beneath a bed, including one set of kitchenware, dry goods and a two-week wardrobe.
There is a lot of space beneath a slightly elevated bed. No need for a loft.
Sit on your bed to dine, study, lounge, entertain, etc. Eat with your plate in your lap. Rather than a desk, use a handheld computer or clipboard. Store handy items in a tote bag on a nearby hook.
Store towels and cosmetic baskets on open narrow shelving over a toilet. Try a small 12" triangular bathroom sink without a vanity.
Additional closets, cupboards, shelving, tables and chairs may not be needed. Try floor cushions.
It's not about seeing how much stuff you can cram into a small space that you would ordinarily use in a larger home. It's about changing your behavior!
Ok, but some people like to have guests and stuff, and it's a little uncomfortable and awkward to eat around a bed with 4 people. I agree that people should do with less, but there's a point where it becomes a little ridiculous.

I see some of these products being really good for a quest bedroom that isn't just a quest bedroom. Like maybe you have a home office or something but need a bed for someone who visits. I also see things like this becoming really popular in japan or other areas where you don't have a whole lot of space. Obviously if you live in a smaller town or city most of this stuff wouldn't make cents to you.
