It’s always touching to see how gentle and kind you are with your babies. Not only are you a wonderful “dad”, but you’re a fabulous reptile ambassador!
I have a very similar outlook on working with monitors. They are very independent by their nature and the worst thing you can do is force your intention on them. I've always said, time in presence without crossing boundaries is the first and most important step. Let them see that you don't only exist to mess with them. These things are curious like you wouldn't believe and will do most of the heavy lifting for you. I agree 100% on the hand running - Even though these people attain desensitization to touch this way, it's still the emphasized time in presence outside of these "bad interactions" that is actually accomplishing the taming and not their forced handling of them... but since they never learned to read their animals behavior/demeanor in the first place, they don't understand that. This is the second, most passed around, misinformation regarding the "taming/socialization process" - second only to "hurr durr - just lead them onto your arm with food bro".
Excellent advice! I feel like some people have a hard time understanding that animals are their own beings & not objects. Cats require a similar approach & get a bad rap for being unloving/cold/mean, but you just have to respect them, their space, and their limits. Thank you for being such a good example to everyone as a kind & loving pet dad!! 😊
“Treadmilling”, they call it. Running the lizard from hand to hand. And they often refer to it as the ideal training exercise! Yet you say it’s horrible. I’m with you. We know these animals are highly intelligent and it doesn’t seem like something you’d do to a smart creature. Very interesting!
I appreciate the tips. Depends a,lot on the lizard, or gecko imho. I have a wc Painted Agama who is a complete love..his roommate a female cb has, until now (2years, got her as a tiny baby) has long detested me. All of a sudden, she is a total sweetheart..
My red ackie does NOT respond to treats. So, that's not an effective strategy in my case. Plus he has an early morning diurnal schedule when I’m on a night schedule. What do I do in that case?

Little Apollo is adorable!
I've been working with my new tortoise in the way you have taught us to make him ” friendly,” he is so curious.😊
Very helpful and informative, especially for new keepers. Thanks and have a wonderful day.
Love learning all about the lizards. I will never have one, but I do love knowing about them. Thank you.

4:23 Why does your Sav look like it's leaking fluid out of its nose/mouth? Guessing it's sick base on the little coughing
