Russel, this has helped me sooooo much! I'm really surprised at the lack of Reaper tutorials out there and I've been banging my head trying to figure it all out. You've seriously made my life so much easier! \M/
My man, I am so glad this helped you out bro :). I want to start doing more Reaper tutorials I just want to see how this one gets received and I will do more. anything specific that you want covered?
I picked up reaper and am learning completely on my own. This clarified a lot, like for instance, me being a numb nut for not knowing I need a cab sim as well. Lol thank you much!
can anyone help me with the cab simulator. The link for it just takes me to a blog and i cant find the download. Ive gotten everything else working but like I said i can not for the life of me find that cab simulator that your talking about
Thanks for the video! I had to find a different cab sim, used Mercuriall - seems good. Also added in ReaGate for noise and Reatune for guitar tuning - worked out really well. Now I have a decent way to play straight in versus using my (physical) amp signal. Now I have to work on the latency/scratchiness. Cheers bru.
Awesome video Russel!! More of these type of videos related to digital amp sims would be great. Do you find that single coil guitars like strats sound weak? Do I need to double track them to get a fatter sound. Do you adjust your Interface's Input level or the DAW's track level? Thanks again for the vids boet
Strats don't sound weak and there is nothing wrong with singlecoils. Double tracking and panning one guitar to the left and one to the right is necessarily to get a stereo image of that track. When this is to thin you can track a 3rd (left) and 4th (right) track. Before doing this I would add a center guitar track and a bass guitar. The bass is the most important part to make a guitar sound massive.
Hey man, my bud Riff Dude hit the nail perfectly, check out this video I did with a Squier Bullet Strat, those SIngle Coils sounded freaking massive. ua-cam.com/video/gXDrik3jQbY/v-deo.html
great tutorial man learned alot from this...i have 2 questions,1 - when i record my guitar cover in reaper it becomes very noisy like squeaks, slide sounds and other unwanted noise even when i play tight2 - is it better to record DI track first then apply amplitube fX or is it better to record with already applied FX (i am new to recording any help would be much appreciated )
Hey man, so I always record with the effect applied, just so that I can monitor it with an amp sim sound, especially for high gain stuff, it's hard to record it clean without any distortion :)
It's possible that the gain level on the amp and/or overdive/boost is set too high. You could try just lowering the volume knob on the guitar a little and see if that helps clean it up. Also, I haven't watched the whole video yet, but in case it's not mentioned, you can run a noise reduction or noise gate simulation before the amp and see if that helps.
What to do if you get a terrible noise in the background when you use the amp sims? I just have my guitar going into my interface into my pc using reaper and the same amp sims you showed, and whenever I arm my recording I get this terrible noise. Any idea on how to get rid of it? The problem only occurs when I attempt to use distortion. Any help would be incredibly appreciated as I can’t find a solution anywhere.
I got it all to work, but how do I get all of the background amp humming noise to go away? Also, I can still hear the clean guitar along with the sims. Is there a way to stop that?
Use a gate to get rid of the unwanted feedback. There should be an option on your audio interface where you can turn off direct monitoring. I have a focusrite scarlett solo, and that direct monitoring button is right above the volume knob to the right
It's silly but I couldn't figure out why my guitar was sound like ass in reaper... as you indicated, it turns out that having the cab sim before the amp plugin was the reason why.
Hope someone still checks these comments lol. I have everything setup right but my guitar just sounds real muddy and notes play on top of other notes I just played, theres reallllly bad lag when I monitor. How do I fix this?
Hi, can you help me? I can only hear the som distortioned by VST plugins when I record it on Reaper using the "Record Armed" red buton, but I CANT PLAY AND HEAR MY SOUND DISTORTIONED, ONLY CLEAN. Do you have any idea how to play hearing the sound with distortions of VST plugins? nice video and thank you.
Go to preferences (ctr + p) and then Device and look if your sound interface is selectet for the input. Does it work now? If not, then tell me I have some other ideas but this is the most common issue
Hey, how do you monitor your audio? I mean, you said on other coment that you create another track but to be able to export what you played during the video. But is there any way of being able to play and listen what you´re playing to be able to set up better volume, tone and etc?
it is tricky hey, but i usualy manage it with the routing inside reaper and I also use OBS Studio as my screen recording software, it has some cool audio routing options that allow me to capture everything in the software as well. I am thinking of putting together a tutorial on audio routing like this.
For all the people saying the OurCabSim link is broken, he also uploaded the file to Google Drive drive.google.com/open?id=1CkyGdfS5o4m3aWAPsAwkz_xD9qxLd0dI
I really don't know what I am doing wrong... I copy and pasted the plugins to the right destination and did the "Rescan" and re-open the program but they are not appearing on the plugin list. I need to finish an EP asap so hope would be very much needed if you have any idea how I messed this simple task up.
I copy and paste the .dll files (such as Emissary.dll) directly into the FX folder that is inside the Plugins folder inside the Reaper folder, e.g. Program Files (x86) - REAPER - Plugins - FX. It then should show up when you next pull up Reaper and click on the track's FX button and then click on the choice at the bottom that says 'Add.'
Quick question, how are you getting your audio playing live through Reaper. Been trying to find ways of playing and having it come out live as I play it and record audio/video at the same time, but am having issues finding a way to do it.Tried OBS and a voxengo recorder plug in but have pretty good delay going on.
Hey man actually quite a cool trick. Create a second track, route the output of your guitar track to that new track, then right click on the arm button and select record output -> Record output: mono. That will give you a track in Reaper that you can then export and then sync with your video in post.
Thanks man, I'll try and figure out where to set the output to the track but appreciate it, I have seen so many people be able to do it and for some reason just couldn't find a way myself haha. Thanks!
I track at 48,000khz with a 128 buffer size and have a 4.2ms latency, he mentioned his was 4.2ms also I believe which is very manageable, I get more of a delay when playing live especially large venues outdoors its way worse. try setting your interface and project settings to these numbers. hope this helps. also I record mostly with my amplifier miked up and record monitoring off and latency is never even an issue plus it sounds better to me.

Crotes1990 hey man. Is the input monitoring on your interface maybe enabled? That would monitor just your guitar DI and not the audio coming from your DAW.

Man i'm having this exact same problem and a gate isn't really working for me, if you've found a solution id really appreciate it.
When using free plugins, I use two noise gates in my signal chain. I just posted a video demonstrating free amp sims and what I used, links included.
Do you HAVE to have an audio interface JUST to sound THAT good with your guitar tones?
They’re not that expensive tho. You could use something like a rocksmith cable but then latency will be a big issue.
Why do you need a D.I. box when you already have an interface?
if your guitar has a high frequency you need a di to stabilise it. most audio interfaces have them built in
so you are talking specifically about active guitars then?
I don't know the theory, but practically i can say you can get a louder and cleanner sound without turning up the gain on you interface.
I got it all to work, but how do I get all of the background amp humming noise to go away? Also, I can still hear the clean guitar along with the sims. Is there a way to stop that?
