he is being honest so regardless of it sounding modest or not,he is just explaining that there is nothing special about him performing, its not like he is downplaying the value of his music.
EDM can clearly elicit emotions otherwise the vast amount of people wouldn't be attending the shows. The point of music is to create am emotional response. An instrument is a means of conveying a message. So technically he is doing something to bring thousands of people to each show. Times they are a changing. We are evolving, so are the means in which we communicate
I know what he's talking about. And i can tell that i know so fucking much bout Joel that i can say he's one of the few with actual knowledge who bring devotion and talent in what they do. But unfortunately talent is undervalued in our days. Anyone can tell. If anyone wants to chat about music follow me on twitter ( @Andrew_N_K )
Electronic music is just as hard as making Rock music, I do make Electronic music and Rock, and at times i find it harder o create electronic music. At times, it is more difficult to make your own sounds from scratch, patch them, program them, and use them in a live set, than it is to turn on an amplifier and start playing. I think he is underestimating what he does, yet he still is speaking the truth, somewhat. But that is only my opinion. ps He's not a dj.
A can being beat on with two sticks in a rhythmic pattern is still music. Pounding or stomping a beat is still music. Just because they are behind a switch board and a bunch of buttons doesn't make them a technician, which I keep hearing time and time again. To easy beat the argument we would really have to go look at primitive man and what they had. Rocks, sticks, logs, bones, hides, vocal and, so on, They did have much and they still came up with it. No matter what you think they are musicians
Well, being a producer myself who has also had some classical training of a classical instrument, I agree with you in the sense of that term applying to classical music, but not necessarily other genres. I'd say, not necessarily applying to this house producer... But lets say, an experimental producer such as Flying Lotus, Four Tet, or even myself... They put loads of time and effort into fine theirs? Even though they may not play instruments, is that not worthy, or applicable to 'musician'?
In my opinion, I think it is time for the majority of these artists to start bringing in band mates. Pretty Lights, Netsky, even solo artists like Trent Reznor as NIN bring in a full band for their performance aspect. I think Deadmau5 with some virtuoso synth players, even if the synth is running through midi, and the entire band wearing Mau5heads would be amazing to see and worth the hefty price ticket
But then you have Wilkinson who bring his band, has the drummer play an acustic drum rack the entire concert and an actual drum rack can be dope but frankly doesn't work on every track so in that case I'd rather have him DJ to be honest.
I use sampled inserts in my music, but its not samples of other songs. Its sound effects, speech cuts and the like...i dont think its fair to count someone who learned their instrument/s for years with someone who just makes dance tracks. I recognise that what he does is not easy, but its not that hard either.
as a guitarist in a jazz band that loves dubstep and fucking electronic music in general i always find it really funny if people talk that way :D the shit a lot of guitarists do is a lot less than what mister mau5 just explained here. it s a lot more about how you do it. how you present it. and the often mentioned feel and soul. and i think that is represented in electronic music too. a lot even often times. jazz guitar still is the highest form of music so fuck yo! jk
Let me define a musician for you who think Dubstep is nothing more then random noise... A musician is a person who makes NOISE using what ever they can find in the attempt to entertain others with it. To say a singer isn't a musician is wrong as well. I do this in defense of all musicians for I am sick of hearing "they are not musicians because they can't play a guitar," Let me point out a lot of musician don't know how to play a guitar, there are several different INSTRUMENTS out there.
he dj's. Dont know why he dances around it. though relating to playing an instrument...even at concerts musicians play thier songs the same way. They dont usually go off on massive tangents of new creative sounds during a song. So its also limited during a show imho. Im tired of this comparison.
No, it hasn't. Real music is created by people who learned their instruments in meditative style determination, who create music out of the ether of the ether of your ideas and the silent skins or strings or lungs of your instrument. Real music conveys the emotions and ideas of the author. You cant convey a damn thing with what he does.
The more I hear him speak, the more respect I have for him. Thanks for sharing how you make the music we all enjoy!
respect to deadmau5 .. for those interested in amazing live electronic music performance .. check out Keys N Krates also from Toronto.
I love this guy's energy.
4:48 "It's like you're stoned or something." Lol
If I wasn't studying music technology, I would have no idea what he's saying, but now I know exactly what he's talking about
I haven't and I know what he's talking about :p
ye kinda basic
lol Glenn Gould on the piano. I love that he mentioned that
he is being honest so regardless of it sounding modest or not,he is just explaining that there is nothing special about him performing, its not like he is downplaying the value of his music.
whoa. yeah, joel's a genius. yup. and very humble too.

3:58 I'm also like how do you even know how to do this awesome sh*t?! xD It would be so cool to know how to make epic music like this!!

deadmau5 should make a stage show, like cgi and his music over it no words.
in a way, it would be a little bit similar to humanoid city - tokio hotel
Genius.

@Vlad Drakilos Thank you for pointing that out to ignorants. Seriously.
Hallo ! do you really use modular analog synth ?
r u kidding

well... daft punk had a similar system in alive 2007... but they were still using ableton to run everything... so, deadmau5 still has a point
Method a la mau5.
because I was speaking in absolutes, right?! Even great bands dont go wandering off the path too much
1:12 YALA!
I understood what he was talking about in the cube >:D yeaaaaaaaaaaaa
*HOW LIVE COULD IT GET* oh.. NOW LOOK AT KREWELLA.. the drums, guitar, bass is live.. with those electronic stuff.. Joel, Here is the innovation
This was 4 years ago man, a lot has changed since then
for example?
oscar All the technology, and deadmau5 is actually pretty good since he actually mixes everything when he performs
"everything" ;)

I thought he just twisted random knobs...
Thumbs up if you got the new Rolling Stone issue!
patch them? so you work with analog?
In the studio yes he works with analog synths.
that is correct..i believe in that statement with all of my being and as a musician i will never accept the likes of him into our ranks
Define 'real musician'? Hasn't that term's meaning changed?
im sorry, are you implying hes not a real musician??
but he is a real musician....
lol, i c wat u did thurr
he dj's. Dont know why he dances around it.
though relating to playing an instrument...even at concerts musicians play thier songs the same way. They dont usually go off on massive tangents of new creative sounds during a song. So its also limited during a show imho. Im tired of this comparison.
ok ok deadmau5 , look at fucking daft punks live shows, THERES ALOT YOU CAN DO LIVE WITH ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Pinkie Pie Swear?
he's as much of a musician as someone pressing play on an ipod
You must go to some crap concerts... GOOD bands will stick to the song structure, GREAT bands expand upon it.
no idea what you just wrote, but im sure it can't be intelligent
If real musicians stop making music, he's out of a job.

Haha bro you have no clue what you’re talking about, unless you’ve updated your opinion since you wrote this :D
he is not a musician.
I would say he really has the mindset of engineering his music in his studio.
