Troubleshooting a Hunter Valve that is not Opening - Quick Tip

- One of the most common reasons for a valve not to open when the controller sends low voltage electricity to the valve is because the exhaust port might be clogged with glue or debris. This video will show you how to unclog this port and give you some other helpful troubleshooting tips.

This was really helpful! Thank you
Thank you for sharing with your consumer! This is why I’m a fan of Hunter products.
Thank you
Tks for making this video.
Excellent insights. Thanks.
Thanks for the great information I have a issue with one zone on my system it worked a few hours ago then it didn’t I know that there is water pressure I turned on the valve and the sprinklers didn’t pop up so I’m guessing the exust port as you mentioned
Good video. Thanks.
Outstanding, succinct and useful video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great Video , good information. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
A common problem I get is some grit in the solenoid that prevents the plunger moving. Just unscrew solenoid and remove the plunger and clean.
Your solution worked for me. It took a bit! I have the node 100 B - DC solenoid. The plunger was very stiff. I had to move it in and out manually quite a bit. I used a spray cleaner also. Now it is working very well. Now it makes quite a snappy sound when turning on and off (before it sounded weak, almost inaudible). Thanks for your comment! Now to fix the leaking housing 😅
none of my valves resemble the one demonstrated so still confused
Coud you explain please how a DC hunter solenoid works. When timer activate it what timer does send? Momentary 9VDC or it constantly holding 9VDC.If it holds how much current is it drowning and how the timer shutting it down? Reverse polarity for a moment?
Yes, the DC latching solenoid only sends a momentary pulse to operate. Please see the attached article for more details:

Thank you again for contacting Hunter Technical Support. Please let us know if we can offer any other assistance.
quick question, when i removed the valve the plunger assembly was not attached to the valve. the washer was also broken. rolled the washer on the metal part of the plunger assembly all the down and then pushed the plunger back in to the valve. Screwed the solonoid back on. turned on the water and no water coming out after quarter turn or even half turn.
Thank you for contacting Hunter Technical Support.
If the solenoid was not assembled when you took it apart then I would think it's not going to function properly. But in any case, manually turning the solenoid counterclockwise it should allow the valve to open. There is also a chance that the exhaust ports within the irrigation valve are clogged. This would require you to clean the ports in the valve.
Very clear thank you
You are welcome
can you replace a HPV diaphragm with a PGV diaphragm?
Good question about compatibility. The HPV is a discontinued valve and the parts for valves we make now are not compatible with it. If a part breaks on your HPV valve, unfortunately, you have to replace the whole valve. You can replace the HPV with a PGV though. Use the link below to find a distributor near you to get a new valve or other parts and products we make.

The valve will not open if it is installed with the incorrect orientation. Solenoid side at the downstream side
Hunter valves all have an arrow to indicate the direction of flow. You're correct that it's important to install it in the correct direction.
Water is getting to my sprinklers but none of them will raise up out of the grass. I have a bunch of small puddles in my front and back yard where the sprinklers are located. Can anyone assist with this issue?
Hi. Something similar happened to me: A sprinkler was not tightly screwed and it was leaking where it connects to the pipe. Had to dig, unscrew, clean and rescrew. Hope that makes sense.
@@alcantar06 Did that one sprinkler affect all your sprinklers or was the issue only for that particular one? asking since none of mine are working !
Hi. I'm not sure if I'll get a reply but here goes anyway.
I was having problems with my system and recently replaced the solenoids and both of the valves worked fine but one of them worked only when the bleed screw was unscrewed to the point of leaking. Is it the bleed screw that need replacing? No blockages that I am aware of and I changed the diaphragms. It's just that when I tighten the bleed screw, the sprinklers stop
Thanks
I'm having the same issue, what did you end up doing?
Same problem for me! Bleed screw is supposed to discharge water on top of the valve. That is not faulty. Did you try cleaning the port in this video?
Hey guys can you please help? I have a 2 zone node.
Zone 1 does not always start (2am), whereas zone 2 always does (2:15am).
If I start zone 1 manually however, it will start with no problems.
I feel like the problem started since I changed to odd days, but maybe I simply didn't notice before.
Thanks.
Just programmed a different runtime and start time (B) to see if it does the same.
Sorry to read about the scheduling conflict. Please use the link below to reset your controller. I believe this is a glitch and performing the reset should fix it.
www.hunterindustries.com/support/node-resetting-and-clearing-controllers-memory
@@Hunter_Industries well it wasn't scheduling conflict it seems. So what if the valve actually actuates, the sprinkler comes up but then immediately goes down again? According to the node the zone is on. I can hear it actuate both on and off. Could it be the exhaust being clogged?
My issue is that I can get everything working as it should except when it "clicks" the heads pop up for .5 sec and nothing. It is like it cuts on and then right back off. Any ideas?
If your controller is displaying a station running but a valve not activating is most likely an indication of a problem at the irrigation valve or wiring to the valve. The most common reasons could be a either wire connection, broken wire, or a non-functional solenoid at the valve. Learn More: www.hunterindustries.com/support/valves-valve-not-opening
If the solenoid is good, there is also a chance that the exhaust ports within the irrigation valve are clogged. This would require you to clean the ports in the valve.
If the controller is producing the proper voltage at the wire connection of the irrigation valve, we would then recommend replacing the solenoid.
ORRRR... you are using a 24v ac solenoid on a 18v dc system lol
Thanks for sharing, mine is not closing 100 porcent ans the sprinklers are driping water. I have review everything ans I cannot see anything , the valve is New, in fact you can hear a buzz when the valve should be closed. Thanks
Thank you for contacting Hunter Technical Support.
An irrigation valve that is not closing is most likely the result of debris in the valve. Small debris that may get stuck in the valve may cause the diaphragm not to seat properly resulting in a valve that stays open. Check that the solenoid and bleeder screws are tightened down.

Thanks so are you suggesting I open the 4 screws and clean out debris in the diaphragm seat? That’s painful to do in the field… I would have to remove the entire contraption being it in the garage, clean it, and put back on. May as well replace the $25 part. Wish there was a flush feature to clean it out with water pressure. Pls consider as a design enhancement.
This is why UA-cam is awesome
Thanks for watching!
I just purchased 3 solenoids at Home Depot and 2 of them didn’t work at all? First time that has ever happened! Anyone else experiencing that?
Hunter Irrigation thanks for the info and reply back. I actually checked with multimeter and also did it with 3 - 9v batteries and nothing. It’s strange that is the first time. I took them back and got my money back. But thought it was strange and figured I would ask
