So nice to see a mountain scene...especially a misty one.Good contrast of edges hard & soft between the trees & the mist also contrast of temperature..cold sky /warm mist.
You perfectly demonstrated how to paint clouds at a mountain top and I am so so glad that you did not skip through those steps as so many painters do, as if it's esoteric knowledge or a technique that must be kept a secret. I don't know why but I held my breath every time you sprayed the paint you just placed on but I realize that the effect is simply worth the effort and wow, it looks awesome. I never thought that much spray would be needed for cloud formation. Your color choices for the clouds are superb. Thanks for a valuable lesson and a beautiful mountain scene. I enjoyed this immensely.
Beautiful, thank you. I focused my attention on your treatment of the trees this time. Colour, shape and the impression of them disappearing into the valley. I think the type of brush is also important here- something I've learned watching your videos and trying your brushes. They can make a difference.
Once again--wonderful tutorial! Since the Midwest is receiving an abundant snowfall right now, this is a great lesson to try this weekend. Thank you again for sharing your talent and teaching with us.
Hi Rick it’s Julie! This is my favorite painting yet!! Cannot wait to try it this morning. Oh my.. . what joy painting brings!!! Thank you so much. You continually paint my favorite things-which is nature in all her beauty! 🎨❤️🏔
Enjoyed the short and the long version. I need to see if we still have some of our pictures from the Santa Fe area. I would be fun to try something similar. thank you
Absolutely stunning work Rick! This one is definitely a favorite. I’m trying to keep my watercolor as fresh and as transparent as possible and these tutorials are a blessing. Thank you (:
Awesome Rick. We went on an Alaska cruise a few years ago and we went on a plane ride and tried to fly to the peak of McKinley but she refused admission on this one day but it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Thanks so much for this beautiful painting.
The technique you used to suggest mist is very clever and complex. Do you get it right every time ? What’s the smallest paper size you suggest to give it a try ( mist and mountains)?
Margaret McLaughlin check his website where he lists all of his materials. Many people ask him these type of questions and he did that to offer information about what he uses.
As mentioned in the previous comment, I do list my materials on the studio page of my website. Here is the link: rsurowiczart.com/studio/. Regarding the "Royal Blue". It's a Holbein color. This is their brand name for their formulation of the pigment PB60. Other manufacturers call it indanthrone blue, indantherine blue, and delft blue.

You could work as small as 8" x 10". You need to make sure you have a spray that is a fine mist.
Love your videos
Thank you !
Fantastic. Sir what kind of paper you generally use?
Thank you Balaram. I work almost always on Lanaquarelle 140 lb Cold Press.
Rick - what brand of royal blue do you use?
