I've looked up 8 or 9 of Kates songs & I'm STUNNED how passionate people are about her. I grew up listening to Kate. My Dad LOVED her!! I didn't relized how lucky i was to be a kid & grow up listening to her. NO ONE i knew ever heard of her, so it was just Dad & I that would listen to her records all evening. My Dad has passed, those memories are so precious to me. I am SO GLAD to see she has so many fans!!! There is NOBODY like Kate!!! :)
Even more disturbingly beautiful than Wuthering Heights, this masterpiece should have gone straight to Number 1 in the charts. The song made a profound impact on me the first time I heard it and still does to this very day. Genius.
A truly beautiful song & a beautiful piece of music classical overtones but WAY ahead of its time with sampling before sampling became common place. This also contains a message that was so ahead of its time & that most people unfortunately took no heed of it. Breathe in my mother ( earth/ nature) with a video of her in a plastic bubble that turned out to be the ultimate irony considering, the damage that we now know plastics ( not nuclear war!) have caused to our earth & our oceans. Strangling & suffocating them both, making it virtually impossible for them or anything else to BREATHE! :-(
I'm having a bit of a time with allergies today and this song, which I hadn't thought of in years, came to mind. I'm so glad to have found this video of it. Thank you for having posted it. Kate Bush, so brilliant, my very favorite female singer and quite possibly my very favorite singer of all time. A true treasure.
I discovered the lovely Ms. Bush back in 1985 and life has increased in awesomeness as a result ever since! I remember it like yesterday, the first time I heard the title cut of 'The Dreaming' (my first Kate album) I practically fainted with joy and total amazement! Really man, from that day on, everything has looked different. She's simply brilliant.
The reason I like it is because it has a very clear message. During the cold war many people where terrified of a nuclear explosion. I think Kate Bush might have possibly been warning people about how dangerous it was. Personally I think the video itself was very clever.
man, i have been listening to kate bush for 22 years or so and i still find new lovely things in her songs every time. i really really love her music. and her voice and everything...
There is more to this song than most even can imagine. Kate is a Visionary and a Revolutionary. And one of the Mothers of this EARTH, a Queen and a Goddess. I love Kate Bush for she has a knowledge she shares with us in her emotional content which it takes an initiated individual to comprehend but a common man like me can understand as well. Every song is even more powerful than I think she herself know when she created it. THAT is a sign of God.
It really has a sinister edge to it this one. It came out at a time when many of us expected something like this to actually HAPPEN. More than a song, you see. Kate is lovely and talented.
Your comment shocked me. I clearly remember playing this on cassette tape in the car, and my small son singing along to it, that must be 23 - 24 years ago. Yet I still listen and enjoy Kate's music, she *feels* the music like no one else I have heard.
Lord, a timeless masterpiece of pop music art that is almost 30 years young now... I always wonder who will ever hold a candle to Kate? I dare say: no one, never.
uh... she's actually better than many people in music history regardless of sex, and surely much better than many renowned men. You don't need to put her aside them just because she has a vagina ^^'
A truly beautiful song & a beautiful piece of music with classical overtones but WAY ahead of its time with sampling before sampling became common place. This also contains a message that was so ahead of its time & that most people unfortunately took no heed of it. this is prime kate...its pure genius....its what i have been waking up to for over 12 years now...helps me to remeber to be a proud wiccan and what others are prepared to do to us to withold the truth that wicca is the first and foremost relegion of all time...i thank kate for being brave enough to send this out to the world.
This is absolutely incredible. One of the most original artists in the history of music, PERIOD. One knows when a particular song is unique, or an artist, for it is their songs that you do not want to end, that you do not want to go away, that you just want to keep going and going and going, and this song in particular, "Breathing," is a song that I did not want to end! In fact, many of KB's songs are this way--just riveting, original and complexually-delighting in every possible facet.
Amazing! I'd always fancied her when I was a schoolboy (in late 70's and early 80's) but I had no idea (til now) just how very talented she is. An amazing song, thought provoking lyrics, and powerful video to go with it.
There will never be another Kate.... Her music takes me to places that I didn't know even existed and leaves me wonderfully devastated ..... I hope that doesn't sound too cheesy but I think you Kate fans out there know what I mean.
I know this isn't exactly a hopeful song. However, "But my instincts tell my to keep breathing..." That line has kept from suicide on more than one occasion. Thank you, Kate.
kate is an old soul, with lots of experience with her even as a teenager!! She is very special and gifted... when you hear her talking, at 20, you really feel she is older. There is no other like her.
You have to really step back to realize just how cerebral her stuff is. It's full of textual references, psychoanalysis, and novel ways of expression. Her career is in the state of perpetual revelation and discovery, and the world is so, so much better for having her. Just imagine never having heard of Kate Bush... I think the mere thought breaks my inner world.
Wonderful record, it's brilliance doesn't diminish as the years go by. Wildobserver - couldn't agree more with your comments. I count myself lucky to have grown up in the 1970's. We just took the great music for granted!
KAte Bush is a most amazing performer and song writer.. this song is as powerful as it ever was....makes me cry every time..it should be put out again . its more and more relevant as our ice caps are melting.... Hurry up world and do something before weren't the point of no return...
It is so kickass to have lived all this time and then now to discover all this stuff by her as if it was brand new....and i think that makes it a double pleasure treasure
The most important is the song. The video is only a vision.Kate's music is not only beautiful,it increases our imagination, her music is so much generous.
Oh Kate, how I loved ye. Born in 1972 I grew up in 80s with Protect & Survive leaflets to explain how to survive a nuclear blast, then as teenagers we had Threads which scared the ship out of me and told us best NOT to survive a nuclear explosion, then there were songs like this.... magnificent, modern artists take note, shut up and listen.
After seeing and hearing this I shall definitely be listening to more Kate Bush (before I only knew her from her work with Peter Gabriel). I pretty much like all kinds of music (with the exception of all the commercial pop crap that comes out today) but this I think practically defines "real" music. Rock on.
The song, like many Kate Bush songs, has the power to make me cry. She was so talented. There are no artists today in popular music that even come close. I hate how shallow our society has become.
Yes,one of the greatest songs of Kate Bush. She said,at the time of the release of the "Never for Ever" album (1980),that she considers that she made, with "Breathing",her best song so far.She is really proud of that song.Amazing song.
These early period videos were cheaply made but represent provovative ideas & the music they portray is astonishingly creative & original. The themes here are spooky & apocalyptic; quite dramatic in function if not in form & O-M-G that fretless bass by John Giblin is phenomenal. Great punches in the heart & soul when the possiblities suggested here penetrate the imagination. Genius!
Like all great performers, she puts so much passion into the work...you become obsessed even if u didn't want to.....I love the middle section, when the bass plays and there is almost silence,,,,,,,classic bush
With old music videos they become almost transparent over time, seeing through all of the technicality and artistry, but this one for me still stands to this day. There is something strangely hypnotic about it, be it Kate or the way the video is produced. All that said, she is a legend.
Kate Bush is a true singularity and a tender Goddess. One of the most brilliant singer/song writers on this earth. This anti-nuclear piece is, unfortunately, timeless. Ta fer the upload. "Chips of plutonium are twinkling in every lung" Be Well.
I remember the first time I heard this song, I was spellbound. Seeing this video gives me a chill when I think of what she is describing. This woman has transcendental creativity. Love her, her work, her being.
as an englishman who has been trying to learn to speak dutch let me tell you now how much i envy and respect all other nationals who manage to learn english and seem to speak it as if it was their own language. im finding dutch very difficult to master mainly because you can only learn dutch from books and audio tapes as there are no schools in england that teach it.if i could speak dutch as good as our friends from holland can speak english i would be a very happy soul.
I love her quirky music. So unique....SO Beautiful. Her voice suits her eccentricity and flavour of tone and mood her songs. Her songs are almost frightening, captivating. Her cries for help are so haunting. There should be more artists like her nowadays like Bjork or newcomer Bat for Lashes. But still they can't get the "Kate" Beauty in their songs.
Kate has ALWAYS been a maverick and gone her own way NEVER bothering with trends and in her unique vision and style is an ARTIST of uncomparible style and artistry, she will outlast the Gaga's and Taylor swifts of the world and still have talent to spare....
I really hate to open up a can of worms, but I have always loved Tori Amos' music. Kate Bush was before my time, so I've never heard of her. But now that I have heard the original, I can clearly see where a lot Tori's inspiration has come from. There voices are SO similar and the style of singing. It kind of makes me sad to see Tori isn't as original as I had once thought, but I'm glad to learn about such a talented musical genius!
One of the most influential women in music of her time...and her legacy still goes on to this day.
One of the greatest artists UK has given.
One of the greatest artists the world has ever known.
Agreed x

No fancy words: Kate Bush is goddamn wonderful. Thank you, you gem

Kate Bush Is a musical Goddess. I own everything she has ever recorded. Simply the best.
I remember as I had found Kate as I was 17, in the dark 80's, I could sit hours watching just her videos. They were another world.
Absolutely amazing.
Wow... What an amazing (and sad and moving) video... Kate Bush is more than just a singer... She's an actress... A visionary... A true artist...
Kate Bush, ich bin seit 30 Jahren Fan von Ihr. die Stimme ist so fantastic und ihre Texte unglaublich vielschichtig...
There is more to this song than most even can imagine. Kate is a Visionary and a Revolutionary. And one of the Mothers of this EARTH, a Queen and a Goddess. Hi Kate, had a wonderfull time last night watching yr 1 hr special...Amazing.Thank you,all the best John.
An artist with originality will never sound old and tired. That's why her music still sounds so brilliant.
Your comment shocked me. I clearly remember playing this on cassette tape in the car, and my small son singing along to it, that must be 23 - 24 years ago. Yet I still listen and enjoy Kate's music, she *feels* the music like no one else I have heard.

The greatest female artist . Second to none.

Haven't heard it in a long time.
Makes me lost in my dreams.
Miss this specific sound.
Gosh how time flies.

I'm from the kate bush era.i think she's the best British female ever.
she IS the most adorable woman who ever lived.
Amazing! I'd always fancied her when I was a schoolboy (in late 70's and early 80's) but I had no idea (til now) just how very talented she is. An amazing song, thought provoking lyrics, and powerful video to go with it.
Dark... yet ethereal.
Gosh what an artist ! :-O
I realised last year that I can't live without Kate Bush.
I need some of her music to keep... breathing... !
There will never be another Kate.... Her music takes me to places that I didn't know even existed and leaves me wonderfully devastated ..... I hope that doesn't sound too cheesy but I think you Kate fans out there know what I mean.

PS HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATE! You ahve always been amazing and i love all your snogs!!:)
Omg it's surprising to see how much famous birthdays love Kate Bush
This is an astonishingly good song, equally ominous and inspired and sung from the point of view of an unborn child. Life itself is Breathing...
I recently learned that Kate Bush's music has been classified as "art rock", which I think is a perfect description. This is ART!
You have to really step back to realize just how cerebral her stuff is. It's full of textual references, psychoanalysis, and novel ways of expression. Her career is in the state of perpetual revelation and discovery, and the world is so, so much better for having her. Just imagine never having heard of Kate Bush... Kate Bush is the best! the melody, her emotion in the songs, she is indeed the goddess of music!!!
KAte Bush is a most amazing performer and song writer.. this song is as powerful as it ever was....makes me cry every time..it should be put out again . its more and more relevant as our ice caps are melting.... Hurry up world and do something before weren't the point of no return...

One of my all time favorites. Thanks for posting.
This is one of the best tracks ever made by KATE. This one was released, when i was a child...now i am 36 and still love her music !!!!
Kate Bush is the Fellini of the music world; pure vision, pure talent, pure fantasy and pure art!
Stunning.
What a deep song. Why can't more music be as brilliant as this?
Epic. No other word for 'Breathing' I can think of that truly sums it up.
The most important is the song. The video is only a vision.Kate's music is not only beautiful,it increases our imagination, her music is so much generous.
Absolutely amazing.... beautiful woman... fantastic voice .... brilliant lyrics...
Beautiful music and presence....genius

so beautiful no other word for it, give me something to breathe!
The desolation and hopelessness evoked by those Bolero drums at "Last night....." still gives me chills after all these years. Sublime stuff.
it's hard to believe that it's been 30 years since this song came out...
Kate was sooooo ahead of her time

facinating, fantastic, amazing video. I n song and images

This song was the ticket to brilliant music my older sister brought to me....since then i love Kate
It's nice to see that someone else is a fan of both Kate Bush and The Cocteau Twins.

What a find. Superb Kate Bush. So original and unlike anyone I've ever seen.
amazing, doubt any other female solo singer will ever come close to writing and performing as kate did, I wish she would do a tour!!!
This song is so brilliant.
One of my fav songs ever. I just love Kate Bush.
After 30 years this still makes me cry
Like all great performers, she puts so much passion into the work...you become obsessed even if u didn't want to.....I love the middle section, when the bass plays and there is almost silence,,,,,,,classic bush

No matter what mood I'm in Kate Bush does it for me, brilliant woman
This music video and song is sooooo incredibly beautiful!!!!
I remember the first time I heard this song, I was spellbound. Seeing this video gives me a chill when I think of what she is describing. This woman has transcendental creativity. Love her, her work, her being.
Absolutely fantastic. She is the best musican of the 80's i think. :)
Unforgettable. There is no one like her!

Wonderful Goddess. How I adore her. Her music has enlightened me for 30 years.
i have always found this song haunting and epic-i just love it and what a cool vid as aways from kate!
breathing more of her awesome music ,what an artist, her voice is something else
Agreed. Kate is the greatest female talent in the history of popular music. And the only one who will endure long term.
when i listen to this tune, i can hardly breathe...Kate simply takes it all away.
A talented, gifted artist. A living musical treasure.
Beautiful lush song with a message that is still as relevant and resinant today as it was the day it was written
simply brilliant.
So strong vocally and artistically !!
Oh yeah totally.
One thing I love about UA-cam is the memories it dig up from way way back.
This song is marvelous, especially the last minute or so!
Kate has ALWAYS been a maverick and gone her own way NEVER bothering with trends and in her unique vision and style is an ARTIST of uncomparible style and artistry, she will outlast the Gaga's and Taylor swifts of the world and still have talent to spare....
Such a talented singer/songwriter. I think she's great.
Superb - and enduring part of my life, and a constant inspiration.
Fantastic song by a fantastic artist ... ❤
really masterpiece. 'genius' is a small word for this.
Not only did she do it first, she did it best. Genius.
I really hate to open up a can of worms, but I have always loved Tori Amos' music. Kate Bush was before my time, so I've never heard of her. But now that I have heard the original, I can clearly see where a lot Tori's inspiration has come from. There voices are SO similar and the style of singing. i love how she always has such touching stories in each of her songs, fuck she's such a great writer.
I agree too. Both Amos and Bush are gorgeous artists, musicians and singers.
Absolute genius
You'll find with most of Kate's work that the subject matter is open to intepritation, as is most art work. She's just technically brilliant.
