I moved to Spain (Mallorca) 21 years ago from the UK, I love it. It's getting very difficult to do it these days on a permanent basis if you have a UK passport though.
Ahh, I was going to ask about your children and whether they were moving with you. You answered my question! I don't blame you in the least for wanting to leave Britain. I never thought I'd say this, but (at 59) I can't see a reason to stay. It's bloody dire and getting worse. In so many respects. Such a tragedy.
Our daughter graduated uni last year and is now settled in a job in London. We are lucky enough to have bought a house in SW France. Its cheaper for her to travel to Bergerac from London to what it is to get the train from London to Darlington. We too are leaving the UK in 2 years time. The UK is going to the dogs ! Heres to the sun on our backs and great coffee !
I can see why Girona is appealing in January. I rode MTB today, it was sunny and somewhere between 15-20 degrees (C, not F). Nice to live in California. Enjoy the sunny weather.
Hi Juliet, loved watching the gravel trails you were riding, I am booked to go back in April for a few days gravel riding-hired bikes from Eat Sleep Cycle. I was there in November riding my 75 year old Triumph Trophy round the hills for a week-love Girona.
My experience was really different. I was just there and the traffic was crazy and the worst part was the terrible air pollution. I’d heard a lot of positive things about Girona but the air pollution really surprised me.
I’m a regular traveller to Girona and have never experienced any air pollution, and the traffic is only in the middle of the city. All car drivers are very respectful of cyclists.
Personally I think it’s nice seeing “normal” roads and trails, its reality; not every scene needs to be out of a movie to showcase a city or countryside. No matter were in the world there are down on heal parts, industrial parks and suburbia. Because it’s different to home it’s fascinating 😊
Yes I agree. While training in the Canaries I talked with locals and learned how their water supply was cut at certain times , for the benefit of tourists who want 3 showers a day etc.
Wow, it's inspiring to see your resilience and determination to get back on the bike after such a challenging injury! It’s a testament to your love for the sport. Perhaps this could be a good opportunity to explore some elbow protection gear-it might help prevent similar injuries in the future while keeping you confident on the trails. Wishing you a speedy recovery and many safe rides ahead!
Thanks for the great video Juliet. Girona certainly looks great and with such an amazing cycling culture - WOW what a place to live, or at the very least visit as often as you possibly can. All the best with the wonky sore elbow.
So, so jealous! Just visited earlier this month and spent a few days exploring the surrounding area by bike, to say nothing of the scene in town. Left reluctantly, wondering what it would take to move there (from the US - it’s feeling like time to go!). Now I see this and, to make matter worse, the apartment we rented is just over your left shoulder in the opening shot. I can see our lovely balcony! The views were unreal. Thanks as always for the inspiration, even if it’s on a slightly different way this time. 👋
I visited Girona for the first time in September and spent a week riding. What a nice place! I can see why folks want to live there. 20*C in January is pretty dreamy
I had the same problem when I visited girona and ended up on the dual carriageway. And I got the route off the garmin site so someone else also went the same way too! It happens Juliet
In Catalunya (and most of Spain tbh), gravel is counted as a road, sat navs and maps don't really differentiate, so you often find yourself on a "road" that isn't suitable for a road bike. Happens all the time, you get used to it :)
I'm super-envious! Moving to Girona is my plan, but timeline is unknown because of health and family issues.... (It's really time to get out of the US!) Eat Sleep Cycle is great!
Catalonia is truly a wonderful place for cycling in all its forms... road, gravel and Mountain Bike. Speaking of MTB, have you ever ridden on the slopes of Santa Coloma de Farners... they are really great.
Great video. I think I did the same or similar Komoot route to you in October! Those factories look familiar and I ended up on a motorway too….got totally lost heading back to Girona. 😂 The lake is awesome though. Am back in Girona in March. Can see why so many people want to live there. I could see myself doing so. Just hope we don’t ruin it too much for the local people. I can see why some Spanish people might feel priced out of houses and so forth by tourists and “expatriates”. As well as by second home owners. Nearly all Spanish drivers are so much more careful with cyclists than U.K. (especially London) ones too.
agreed, that's always an issue when places become popular with tourists. The benefit to the local economy is huge but then it becomes difficult for locals to afford property. Perhaps the answer is to ring fence property for locals? But of course everyone wants to do well, so presumably local landlords would prefer the higher rental income from tourists. I do find it tricky when locals punish tourists for coming yet benefit hugely from it. I'm not sure of the answer.
Very nice. Not every ride needs to be a "sufferfest" a few part pace rides make for a good balance. Connect with UA-camr's Russ and Laura of The Path Less Pedaled there in Girona
it made me laugh when you exclaimed ! 90! ill guess euros , too used to free gear ill bet . has to be sales for me ,lucily weve just been thru black friday ,xmas and january sales so i have a few new pieces of gear😂
I dunno about Komoot lol… I did a route to Baselu from Banyoles and on the way back, the route took me off road… 😆… I had to navigate my way back to the roadway… 😅
I don't know Girona ,but it looks cool. What I do know is that I'll also be leaving the UK for Europe despite the challenges post Brexit. Happy riding. 🙃
She did add that that could only occur after the kids went off to college which IIRC is at least 12 to 15 yrs in the future. SO also wants to sail around the world.
Juliet, your videos are so entertaining, I reckon if you did a channel on stamp collecting I’d watch it😊 Great to see you so happy after your accident.
Whats so marvelous about Gerona ? The apartments look like the town planners' ill thought out developments we have in Britain ; there are few trees with any leaves ; whereas theres plenty of green leaf in Britain's winter, the trail you cycled along was featureless , like scrubland, rubbishland, and cafes and bakeries are like anywhere else....there's plenty of castles and other historic buildings everywhere in Britain.....and the spanish winter still isnt so warm; low 60's... you need to head further south like the Canaries to catch winter temperatures in the 70's ......and my God, when it rains in Spain it sure rains !!!!

Welcome to Catalunya! What is your view on the sheer explosion of so called "boutique brands" who make ridiculously overpriced cycling apparel with great designs but mediocre quality? Matter of time before they all go bust, cause let's be honest: who can afford that stuff? (Other than sponsored riders) Peace!
If you become a Spanish resident and then buy I believe the tax won’t apply. I haven’t seen the detailed rules yet though. Holiday homes may be a thing of the past though?
Mass immigration to the UK of both illegal and low skilled/non working people has had dire consequences. I don't blame you for wanting to move and hopefully you can culturally and economically enrich the Spanish people and economy. Oh and the weather will be better, which is always nice.

You should meet up with Russ and Laura - path less pedaled , albeit at party pace!
I love path less pedaled ☺️
Nods vigorously... Love PLP.
Chalk and cheese.
Russ aint interested in watts, training sessions, latex, carbon et al. And his channel is all the better for it.
If I had a cycling UA-cam channel, I think I'd move to Girona.
Russ and Laura........yep, they're good'uns.
yes, great idea! fantastic! sure they understand each other with their unbearable blaaaaa
Amazing city and unbelievable bike stores! Like boutiques 😮.
Take care!
I love the jazz piano backing track on this video. It’s so cool just like your surroundings!!!!❤
I bloody hate it! Jazz sounds like a child with no training messing about on the keys, simply terrible and annoying sound.
haha
I think Girona is one of our favourite places. Thanks for this video!
same. My pleasure
I can see why Girona is appealing in January. I rode MTB today, it was sunny and somewhere between 15-20 degrees (C, not F). Nice to live in California. Enjoy the sunny weather.
lucky you!
I wish I could do too - have a wonderful start into your new life
it's not happening straight away but something to look forward to

That's odd. I spent over 2 months there last year and a bit of time the previous couple of years and didn't notice air pollution.
We made the same experience. Its a beautiful city but we prefer Mallorca.
I’m a regular traveller to Girona and have never experienced any air pollution, and the traffic is only in the middle of the city. All car drivers are very respectful of cyclists.
Good to see you that you are back to your trips and rides, in a beautiful place like Girona. Enjoy.
Tandem at the coffee shop looked cool.
Wow, what a wonderful place for cyclists and cake and coffee lovers!
Wouldn't want to live there, but maybe visit for a cycling holiday

Love Girona and the area on the whole. Super cycling out there. Your vid has brought back so many memories.... and the ice-creams are huge!
I had the same problem when I visited girona and ended up on the dual carriageway. And I got the route off the garmin site so someone else also went the same way too! It happens Juliet
Me too. There’s an issue with agar in mapping I reckon.
In Catalunya (and most of Spain tbh), gravel is counted as a road, sat navs and maps don't really differentiate, so you often find yourself on a "road" that isn't suitable for a road bike. Happens all the time, you get used to it :)
Yep. I’ve had that same experience in Croatia too, specifically the Istrian peninsula, which is still very Italian influenced.
Best bikeshop in Girona is legitimately decathlon for basics at reasonable prices.
I do love Decathlon
Whoops ... knew you'd buy summit! Those cycling shops look amazing! 🤗
I'm super-envious! Moving to Girona is my plan, but timeline is unknown because of health and family issues.... (It's really time to get out of the US!) Eat Sleep Cycle is great!
It's nice to have something to look forward to, see you there
Sorry your elbow is still giving trouble. Good on you for proceeding with your plan though!
Take it easy on that elbow !!!!
Girona looks amazing! Love your videos and hope you you heal up! I need to get out of the states🤣
Looks like a fantastic place, can see why Russ & Laura from pathlesspedaled have noved there too 🚴🚴
Best of health to a great rider 💪🇺🇸☮️🚲🏍️
thank you

You could try a Triathlon. You never know, if you can swim you could be good at it.
Picasso and Keith Haring both represented on the wall at Tata bikes!
Christian Meier is the Canadian former pro, who together with his wife Amber, owns Espresso Mafia, as well as La Fabrica.
I’m pretty sure the reason why is, “Because it is awesome.”
When you are in Girona don't forget to visit all the places GoT was filmed

I love Komoot for route planning, but man you have to double check what it spits out. Unless you like weird surprises.
for sure, it's great but needs checking
Wow how cool to move to Spain! Are you taking your kitty with you?
She did add that that could only occur after the kids went off to college which IIRC is at least 12 to 15 yrs in the future. SO also wants to sail around the world.
Clickbait as usual
100% sales tax on home purchases is slowing me down lol 😂
Yeah i saw that. Try and get an EU passport
A job there is the answer..
You won't have to pay the 100% property tax if you become a Spanish resident. The tax is only for non residents who are from outside the EU.
I wish you all the best with your move to Spain. Do you speak Spanish?
She has at least 12 years to learn she’s not moving anytime soon
@@MsLizzylaw And she'd probably better learn Catalan too!
Nice there .
I love Girona
Route planning mistake - using Kamoot ;)
Juliet, your videos are so entertaining, I reckon if you did a channel on stamp collecting I’d watch it😊 Great to see you so happy after your accident.
So your moving in about 15 years then...lol
Nice helmet Juliet which Smiths model is it?
9:42 I have those in white!
why can't we have bike shops like that in the UK? what was the outro music please Juliet?

Yep Girona is really overrated, locals have also become quite anti cycling in the last year or two.
The ExPro you mentioned is Mario Cipollini also known as Super Mario.
Christian Meier
Given it is post-Brexit, do you need a special residency permit now?
Yes although a surprising number of Brits are able to find an Irish grandmother or whatever and still manage to get hold of an EU passport.
@@nbartlett6538yeah' im half irish so i have citizenship by default
yes, I'd likely apply for the digital nomad visa
digital nomad or non lucrative are the only realistic options these days

that's not posh enough for her, that's a poor country, 3rd world. she doesn't like that people
Because it’s dead nice and the hills are brilliant?
Did you manage to get a working visa Juliet?
Almost impossible now for Brits. Digital nomad or non-lucrative visas are the only easy options these days.
digital nomad is the one I'll be going for

Hard to lump them all into the same category. I think the diversity of stuff on offer is nice. I can't comment on the quality as I haven't tried it.
One of my favourite places. A friend of mine has a place on the coast east of Girona which has been great for some spring cycling trips.
how lovely!
... eventually
We rented our bikes at Eat Sleep Cycle and went for many a after-ride-pint, also couldn’t leave without buying one of their t-shirts and a sweater 😅
How is a UK resident moving to Spain ? What visa ?
Digital nomad visa is one option.
Hahaha
Some time ago I joked about giving you the Spanish passport
Now seems real 😂
I wouldn’t leave England , no way, I was in Canada for 13 years and came back.
Fair enough!
Thats original.
There a lot of Girona based cyclists
Spain ia putting a new 100% tax on propery purchases for non EU citizens. I think the days of moving to spain long-term is less attractive now.
not planning on buying!
If you become a Spanish resident and then buy I believe the tax won’t apply. I haven’t seen the detailed rules yet though. Holiday homes may be a thing of the past though?
@markwhite5796 yeah that's mostly likely the way around the tax.
@@JulietElliottsChannel non issue then Juliet
@markwhite5796 but then you will have to pay Spanish income tax on your global income plus Spanish wealth tax on your global assets.
Oh so it’s not happening then any time soon !!!!

Doesn't Kiera Mcvitie live there? You should hook up.😎
I think she did not sure if she moved back home or Nz
Hi Juliet, are you actually moving to Girona or just wishful thinking ? How have you got around the EU rules etc that Brexit has knackered up for us?
To pay less tax 😂
Spain seems to be sick of foreign cyclist, any attitude from the locals?
Are they? Miat foreign cyclists inject monet into economy.
