And also just looking at modern birds like the emu and cassowary makes it pretty obvious that raptors did not go extinct. there are genes in normal chickens(as well as all other birds) that go unused for developing teeth. There are even fossils of a raptor called Archaeopteryx that had a raptor head with teeth, no beak, yet had feathers and could fly using its wings it also had a uniquely bird like ankle structure. And there are no known bird fossils that are older than when archaeopteryx lived. Yet there are many more bird like fossils dated after that point.
The people who study this stuff don't debat it.

My old skipper always threw the huge lobsters & crabs back, it was a superstitious thing, and he always had this mantra he would pronounce over them as he put them back. Never ever found out what he was muttering. On another note, he never came home empty like other boats occasionally did, never had any accidents either. It was a lucky boat, and he was a good man. I miss those simpler times.

Fun lobster fact! In the past, lobsters were considered disgusting and fed to the poor and dogs. So when the American Revolution came around, the American revolutionists were insulting the British Redcoats by calling them lobsterbacks, which would have been a fairly derogatory name due to the common idea of lobster at the time.

+Kadomex That's mostly all marketing, but also some costs of shipping them live if you live far from the Northeast. You can still buy super fresh lobster for under $6 per pound in New England grocery stores. It was down to $3 per pound two summers ago due to high supply and soft demand. Even cheaper right off the boat. Yet tourists still come up here and overpay 5X for the pleasure of letting someone else toss it into boiling water for them.

Lobsters can replicate their cells indefinitely, however the strain and energy of creating new shells each molt will eventually be too much and they'll die. Males usually live to about 30 years, 60 for females (no explanation given).

In the Museum of Science in Boston, they have on exhibit a giant lobster. I think it's over three feet. I remember seeing it as a kid. My mom wanted to eat it. It was estimated at over a 100 years old. It is estimated that some whales can live as much as two hundred years and that there are whales swimming the oceans today that remember their friends and family members being hunted by New Bedford whalers. It may even be possible that whales that Herman Melville wrote about are still alive. One whale was recently found with a harpoon in it that was manufactured over two hundred years ago that nobody has used for over 150 years

Eventually the lobster would get so big that gravity and the physical limitations of its own chemistry would prevent it from moving and it would die. It's limbs would be too heavy to move. The material of its body would not be sturdy enough to sustain itself. It's limbs would twist and bend under its own weight, then eventually break. From there it would be too heavy and cumbersome to move itself. It'd be a lump of tissue and nerves. You could hardly call it a lobster anymore.

@All Living Things Feel Best Outdoors not lobsters, they have the same nervous system as a fucking ant, and ants cant feel pain because of how small and primitive their nervous system is, both insects and lobsters have the world's worst and oldest nervous system, and this makes sense since lobsters are crustaceans, and everyone with a working, functioning nervous system and brain, inlike lobsters, know crustaceans are related to insects, so no, lobsters can't feel pain, and studies have proven they can't feel pain or are even sentient due to how old, ancient, and non functional their nervous systems are, dont go preaching all animals can feel pain, that simply isnt true, do plants feel pain? No, just because it's living doesnt mean it can feel pain, do jellyfish and bacteria feel pain? No, just because they are animals doesn't mean they can feel pain, the jelly fish is literally a brainless, organless blob floating in the water, and bacteria are literally one of the first organisms to ever exist.

We already have genetic repair machinery. Every single day every cell in your body (about 7 trillion of them) undergoes about 60,000 DNA damage events. That adds up to about 4.2 quintillion DNA damage events. Your cells have specialised enzymes in at least 10 different pathways that fix >99.99999% this damage. We already have telomerase in our cells too, well, specifically in our stem cells and in telomerase-positive cancers (about 85% of all cancers).

One picture shows a 1-Ft long Blackfish, against a Retractable Ruler, the other shows the same Blackfish & the Ruler, *NOSE-TO-TAIL* laid perpendicular between the Lobster's Eye-Stalks..; so it was a Foot accross the Eyeballs.
And I still have the original Photographs.
While it's Tail was hanging over the bottom of a 7 Foot-Long Door, 2/3 of it's Feelers were overhanging the other end...(!).
I make it as being 5 ft from Eyes to Tailfans' Edge.., and I've always thought it must've been 100 years old when Uncle Spencer brought it home for us to eat...

Another good question. Is there a way to slow down the death and splitting of cells without an adverse effect?

    • @Duke00x
      @Duke00x 8 років тому

Shade Nox there is a theory of lower caloric intake. it us said it can slow down cell death and decision. the theory is if you keep your caloric intake to around 1,800 a day many/most cells get a signal to repair rather then replace. This keeps them alive a bit longer. This in turn extends your life span a few years overall. Now last I heard this was still now a definitive thing (i.e. more research needed to prove if it is even a real thing or if it works with humans. or something like that. one study seemed to show it works on mice. But I think a later review or second study may have found questions with the first one or was not able to fully replicate it. I am only half remembering something I half heard on these last parts. I only really know about the first study in any detail).

It is factually impossible to die of old age. What actually happens is that when someone is so old and die, NO ONE does an autopsy on the body BECAUSE they're old. In truth, it is usually due to something else in the body going bad, like a heart attack, stroke, etc.

      Jorna Rood
Depends on your meaning of immortality. To put it in another way, biologically immortal organisms do die, but they don't seem to age.The bristlecone pine is a good example.
Many plants could be essentially immortal. For instance, many cultivated plants that are propagated via cuttings or tissue culture are effectively the same organism over thousands of years. Example: all the difference species of bananas we eat today comes from the same plant years ago. Plants do not die of cancer and they do not have organs in the sense that animals do.
Many trees die due to environmental stress, such as disease or insect infestations etc.

      @OmegaMegalodon 8 років тому +12

Jorna Rood for the record, plants and trees are the same.
I see that you also research bananas from google, isn't clone come from the same tree?
It would be good if you can do some research before you shoot your mouth in this comment sections.

There's a mythology about a lobster in Japan that was huge sea monster and live for over 300 years. This was before it was killed when it attacked a sea vessel. I know Legends are blown out of proportion, but with a lobster potentially being unable to die because of being biologically immortal, it's not out of the realm of possibility. Although we might refer to as a monster class known as the Kraken. A kraken just doesn't have to be a octopus or squid.

Bret Weinstein (I think) discovered that lab mice have abnormally long telomeres. This explains why all the medicine they test on mice doesn't kill them but does kill us. Science is to proud to admit that big of a blunder tho so I doubt it will change.

Interesting! As it happens, my father in law in his time came from robin Hood Newfoundland, and was very much involved with the fidsheries and lobsters. the pictures you show are mostly of what we call Canadian lobsters (characterised by the large frone claws.
These are cold water lobsters, and rthey are scavengers, so when eating them there are parts you wouldn't want to eat, even though they have been boiled so infection is killed.
This type oif lobster is not found south of Cape Hatteras, as south of there the water is too warm. Instead, you find the Caribbean lobster which is also good to eat, properly prepared, but has very small front claws, and a big fat body. In those lobsters, it is the meat in that body which is nice, more than the meat in the claws as is the case with the Canadian Lobster.
All in all, I understand it that there are about 6 major types of Lobster around the workld. The North sea also has another type of lobster, we know as scampies.
One day, my fother in law told of his tpour of the south cost of Newfoundland after a raging storm. th ebeach was a total mess, strewn with all sorts of stuff washed up and lobsters varying from aout 3/4" in length to a few of more like 4 feet.
But generally, a Canadiann lobster more than about a pound and a quarter can be very tough, so it may not be the choice for eating.
When Lobsters in Canada are harvested the landing procedure seems to be old enough to have come from a time when many fishermen were illiterate.
Having witnessed this in person, thre dock is more or less hook shaped. At the end of the hook is a square platform.
When it is time for the lobster boats to return with their catch, a box truck back up close to that square, and 2 men get out and place a series of large blue baskets on the platform.
When the boat comes in they also have a numebr of the same blue boxes fille dwith the catch.
That day, my wife and I were on a vacation in New Brunswick (where she originally came from) and we were looking to buy a few lobsters for our supper.
When the boat came in, I asked one of the fishermen "How much for your lobsters?"
    "$5.00 each!" He repliad.
    so, handing him a $20.00 bill, I replied "I'd like 2."
in return he gave me 4, but no change. It seems logical that he would not want to carry cash with him on the sea, as he would have no way of spending it until he got home.
As the lobsters arte landed on the platform, one of the men from the truck has a scissors like device to apply the bands to the claws, and the other will hold up an un-banded lobster for banding. No problem, just hold the lobster ina wide space so ewhen the lobster spreads his claws, they are far enough from anything else that it has noting to grab.
As each lobster is banded, one of the men has a government metal gauge which he will place against the underside of the shell to measure the size. If the dhell is shorter than the gauge, that lobster is deemed a "canner" and will likely be used for canned Lobster meat, making thermidor, etc. If the shell is larger, it is considered :market size".
Each category is then accumulated in a set of 2 (or pairs) of blue baskets.
At the end, each baset is weighed sepaarately, and the total weight of canners is entered on a government paper form.
Likewise the weight of the market size is entered in another place on that same form.
then the weight of each type is multipled by the market price for that category, giving the sub-total of the value of the catch.
When those 2 figures are added to make tohe total value of the catch, the value is then divided, there and then amongst a table containing the names and Social Insurance Numbers of each fisherman, so determining hois taxible income arising from that catch.
The tax accounitng that applies to the Fisheries is done by cash accounting, unlike most other businesses and occupations. This likely to insure the tax is collected in the current year, without uit beng deferred or subject to inter-year interactions, this likely also a throwback to the days of past when accrual accounting would have been a real bureaucratic problem,
So, in preparation for supper, at the cottage, there was an old boat pulled up on the lawn. the boat was no longer seaworthy, but served as a place to cook the lobsters outside on a propane stove.
Better that way as the stench is no what one would want in the kitchen!
That we served with boiled sandfire greens, a dark green sea vegetable that is very good for your healrth, but must be harvested in the costal salt water marshes. the plants ar elike smalltrees, perhaps 12 to 14 inches high.
Once harvested, you manually pull the green coating off the woody branches and put that in another pot and boil it, much like spinach. Serve with loemon and butter!
One caution about eating lobster: the meat is very rich so not too much or it may leave you feeling sick for a day. I learned this the hard way in Prince Edward Island from a local church lobster fest, where I ate 34 canners - too much!
Canadian summer in the Maritimes can be quite warm and sunny at times, and so makes a nica place for vacations, but be there in the right season.
Summer, ladies take your bikinis, but winter bewtter in something closer to an arctic suit.Temperature variations are very wide, both day to night and seasonally! also distances are long.
Montreal to Moncton by road in good weather is about a day and a half ride. By via Rail, it would be an overnight on The Ocean Limited to Moncton, then rent a car for the remaining15 minute drive to Parlee Beach!
    Caution for allergies:
sme people are allrergic to certain kinds of seafood. this is highly indoividual so each person is their own guinea pig. Try in moderation, especially the firse time, and an allergy to one kind of seafood does not meant you re going to be allergic to another (and the list of kinds of seafood is very long and varied.)
While in the big cities we have fast food, in the Moncton-Shediac area you might see places advertising fried Quahaugs ("CO-hogs") these are a large edible clam that is not commercialized, so wil not normally be seen elsewhere, but again caution, not too ,much, especially the first time!
I found out that I cannot eat them as they make me sick, but if In the u.S. I love Howard Johnson's fried clams, but those are a different species of clam.
Another person could prove to have an allergy profile that is the exact opposite, so, again, everyone is their own Giuinea-pig.
