All the way back in 1909, West Auckland, a team made up of coalminers, took part in a competition called the Thomas Lipton cup, the winners of whom were considered champions of the world. A number of high profile clubs would take part, but it would be the side from County Durham who won the tournament not once, but twice.

These are from my local town. I remember reading about them as a child. I think the common theory (or the one we choose to believe) is they were mistaken to be Arsenal and the mistake was only realised after they won the trophy
