      Possession films versus religious excorcism films. One is able to reach a wider audience while the other is mostly limited to people from religious backgrounds or people who have religious fear.
      The Taking of Deborah Logan, Jennifer's Body, Hereditary, Talk To Me, Evil Dead 2013 & Evil Dead Rise... all great examples of possession horror that does not rely on the redundant religious fear tropes to disturb the audience.
      Personally, The Excorcist is not scary to me rather it is a cinematic masterpiece and the character develepment of Reagan into Pazuzu is *chef's kiss*. I am not conditioned by Catholic fear so I do not find it scary but regardless, credit is due where it is due. The Excorcist makes it hard to reach that level of religious fear in horror.

    Lamashtu and Pazuzu have a connection, and Pazuzu was actively invoked to *COUNTERACT* LAMASHTU?? What in the hell? Why didnt they play with that more?
    Maybe this film, it cultivates in Chris calling on Pazuzu to rid the girls of Lamashtu. With the climax having Chris and the supernatural Avengers summon Pazuzu and due to Hoodoo magic, they weaponize him against Lamashtu.
    Then it ends with Pazuzu getting rid of Lamashtu, but Chris agreed to allow Pazuzu to have her soul in turn for the girls lives. Wanting to redeem herself for Regan's spite against her.
    But instead of simply killing Chris, she falls limp as she explains that she made a deal with Pazuzu when they summoned him, her soul for the girls. With Pazuzu agreeing as that would bring him one step closer to the one that got away; Regan.
    The second film would be a twist of fate, with Chris becoming the one possessed and Regan has to come out of hiding to save her mother from the same demon that once possessed herself.
    Have the third film be some final, big, all out demon hoedown with Pazuzu revealing that instead of ridding the girls of Lamashtu, he took control of Lamashtu and Pazuzu isnt alone.
    Reveal the reason why evil spirits flee when Pazuzu is near, as he can control and gain leadership over lesser demons. Hell, give him some kind of new power he's developed that he can twist human souls as he possesses them and create new demons. Have it be a twist that Chris became a demon as she gave herself to Pazuzu, and the best that they can do to end this is seal them away, in the same fashion in how Father Merrin found the statue of Pazuzu in the original.
    Just do something more original than this.

      @jcloud96 oh, thank you for saying that!
      But it's really upsetting how Chris was brought back simply to be blinded. It's hard to blame her as well for her wooden acting, as she didn't want to actually return. The studio and heads basically forced her to return to the role, and you can visibly see her either being uncomfortable or unbothered in being there. Factor in that she was there for a cheap crowd pop because she's a recognizable face, it just feels icky. If they persuaded her with an actual good role with substance in her being there, it might have intrigued her interest in returning to the role.
      But she knew she was there simply because she was a legacy character, and it shows. Ellen Burstyn deserved better, and I sincerely hope that Linda Blair gets better treatment going forward.

    Great breakdown and something that was brought up not only in this video but by others given the performances by many of the cast yet the film falling short brought something up. That something is while David Gordon Green was able to recapture some of the magic from the original run of Halloween he completely missed the magic of the original Exorcist in this film showing he's not necessarily a bad director but doesn't understand what not only made the original Exorcist scary but special all at the same time. Which is a theme in Hollywood as a whole right now.

    Would have been interesting if the girl who lost her mother wasn't actually possessed. Instead, the accident could have left her with a neurological condition, which she grew up to subconsciously mask in an attempt to fit in - to the point it never got diagnosed. But the physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting experience in the woods (after living a mostly sheltered life) made this condition much more severe. Visual and auditory hallucinations, seizures, blackouts and panic attacks could be portrayed in parallel to her friend's actual possession. When a double possession is suggested, both her and her father (not aware of her preexisting condition and confronted with the supernatural occurrences around the other girl) accept it as an explanation for her current state. The demon meanwhile plays along with the misunderstanding, reveling in the fact that a parent is willing to torture his own child through exorcism, because of irrational ignorance...

    • @spiderwrist
      @spiderwrist Рік тому +4

      That is such a brilliant idea! One of the themes that I think really adds to the horror of the original is the medical side of what Reagan goes through and the helplessness of the parent of a sick child. It's something I think a lot of possession movies try to play with but never very well.

What about the exorcism will cause pain and suffering to ptsd girl other than boredome. The only one who will experience pain is the possessed girl. I could care less about the mental health crisis when there’s an actual demon possessing a child. I am saying this as a viewer where the movie proposes that God and demons are real.

    • @SKy_the_Thunder
      @SKy_the_Thunder Рік тому +2

      @@joec3981 Even mistreating PTSD can do serious harm.
      But I wasn't even talking about mental health, but a neurological condition with explicit physiological symptoms. If you not only ignore a seizure but aggravate it through the experience of such a ritual, that can very much end up on that same level. People can dislocate their limbs, snap ligaments or even break bones during seizure convulsions - especially if poorly immobilized, like being tied to a chair - and even suffocation is possible, due to either biting their tongue and breathing in blood, or accidentally swallowing their tongue itself. And that's not even mentioning the risk of permanent brain damage if such an aggravated seizure lasts too long...
      Pretty easy to frame that in a way that looks very close to the real deal - especially since most possession imagery is derived from seizure symptoms in the first place. And then you get the added emotional gut punch that they could have helped her the entire time _and_ had a better focus on the actual demon...

    To me the ending didn’t feel that much anticlimactic. My understanding of the events was that during the exorcism, the demon realized it was going to lose. Instead of losing both girls he decided to offer a deal disguised as false bravado and fake hope “You can’t save them both, you must chose which to save” he is essentially asking them to give up on one and give him permission to take the child they don’t pick. Katherine’s mother and Victor falter but ultimately don’t budge. After that the demon desperately tries to scare them into making a choice/ accepting his deal. Ultimately Katherine’s father takes the bait and choses. The demon attempts to take Angelica but can’t because of the faith the mother had on the protection she received for her child. This turns Victor in a “Believer” which give Angelica further protection, so he switches target and takes Katherine and tries to assert his dominance by mocking the words of her father “I chose you”. He didn’t chose, he took what he could and called it a victory. This all tried to show that the forces of evil coward in the face of unity and faith, the weapons God gave us to repel them. They got that point across but not as effectively as they could have and the inclusion of the legacy characters was pointless if you think about it.

    I've always been perplexed by the underlying logic in The Exorcist movies. The idea of a demon possessing a child and making themselves known, however in doing so prove the existence of God, but who's mission is to potentially erode people's faith seems counterintuitive. In reality, such a scenario might strengthen religious beliefs, as witnessing a supernatural event can reinforce one's faith. It could be argued that a more effective narrative twist would involve a person of faith, like a pastor, preacher, or priest, engaging in morally questionable actions to shake people's trust and religious conviction. Perhaps it would make more sense if the movies explored the concept of an angel impersonating a demonic entity, providing a thought-provoking perspective on faith, belief, and the supernatural.

      @Cynicbang Рік тому

      I think the book better plants the idea of doubt. The demon pushes those around them to that point of belief before pull back just enough to plant the seeds of doubt as a means of self-preservation. But I don't think the intention of the demon is to make humanity doubt the existence of God, but just completely lose faith in him. It plays into the moral question of Evil and why an all-powerful loving God would allow such cruelty and suffering to go on in the world.
      Merin himself touches up this in the extended cut of the film when he and Karras discuss why the Demon chose Regan. Merin tells Karras that his theory is that 'the point is to make us despair and to see ourselves as animal and ugly. To reject the possibility that God could love us'.

      Apparently in real life people who are possessed do not necessarily act like this, they do evil simply. And these type of events happened only among people who already believe, so to scare them cuz faith and fear cannot coexist in a person at the same time. That's what I've heard.
      But this is a movie so I go by the rules of the movie universe

    I just got done watching this movie. I’m from the Ebert & Siskel era, & I thought Ebert was harsh! He hated everything! I’m a movie enthusiast; I watch movies simply for an escape & to entertain me. I don’t need movies to mirror real life, I can walk outside or read the news. I liked the movie. I loved the Halloween movies David Gordon Green did. Sometimes movies don’t have to make sense or follow rules for me. I’m not about to go trekking in the woods with candles trying to emulate exactly what those girls did. Once the movie ends, I’m back to folding clothes. I appreciate reviews & critiques. Some are sounding the same though. The same three movies are ALWAYS raved about (Barbarian, Midsommer, The Thing) I just don’t get the immense worship of Barbarian it was ok! Anyway just my little ole opinion 😊

    LONG COMMENT: I enjoyed this movie way more than I expected to. I went in with ZERO expectations. I knew going in that it was not going to compare with the original Exorcist because no film will EVER compare to the original Exorcist, which was released at a time when no other film like it existed. That being said, I still wanted to see what they could do with not one but TWO possessions occurring simultaneously. Did I love the movie? No. Was it perfect? Absolutely not, but what horror movie is? (Ok, maybe Hereditary) I think the movie was superrrr slow at the beginning, but eh so was the original. I did know going into this film that it was the first of a reboot TRILOGY so I thought "Ok, it's probably going to be slow since they have to introduce all the new characters and it's going to have to set up a second movie." Given that we know the title of the second film is going to be Exorcist: Deceiver, I have to believe that THAT will be the most f***ed up and darkest movie that maybeeee shows that Angela has not in fact been freed from her possession by Lamashtu. A potential "Psyche! Gotcha!" type of thing. (Also when in the film was Lamashtu's name revealed?) Given what you shared in this video, maybe it's a setup for re-introducing Pazuzu later in the trilogy. Angela does give a creepy little smile at the end which made me think: "uh oh, did I celebrate too early???"
    I also thought that it was pretty obvious from the beginning which girl was going to die. I know that Lamashtu gave the parents the option to choose which girl lives (not) but I think that the demon knew Katherine's dad was going to crack and choose his daughter from the beginning. Man crumpled like paper once everything started going down and could barely stand being inside the house. Why do I think it was obvious? Because Katherine is the only girl that developed an upside down cross on her forehead.
    Someone else may have done a better job with the movie, but it's possible that David Gordon Green won't sign up for the sequel and someone else will get a shot at continuing this trilogy and perhaps take it in a direction that OG exorcist fans enjoy.
    ****Also did anyone catch the moment where Lamashtu can be seen behind Ann Dowd during the black and white scenes? I totally missed it until I rewatched the trailer recently. It can also be seen in this video!
    Thanks for the video and the background info on Lamashtu! Can't wait for the next vid 🖤

  • @carlmacedo
    @carlmacedo Рік тому +1

    I enjoyed the review, but I think you may have misinterpreted the 'PATRIARCHY' line in Believer. Are you aware of this definition?
    CATHOLIC CHURCH PATRIARCY (n.) The hierarchical order of the Catholic Church - priests (men) and nuns (woman). In the Catholic Patriarchy, the exorcist assigned to the case has supreme authority over who is in the room or not.
    In the novel of The Exorcist, Chris was in the room. In the movie, this was not the case. The door closing in front of Chris' concerned face showed this: a concerned Mom hoping for cure and a priest closing the door - likely to protect the Mother from further abuse from the Demon.
    In Believer, Chris seemed like she had wished she had been there to help Regan. Unfortunately, the Church Patriarchy order (Merrin) had the decision and he decided to protect her. Chris wished she could have been in. So....
    *NO - she wasn't 'an ungrateful feminist who hated men' like some have interpreted. She was forced to respect the Catholic Church Patriarchy.
    Make sense?

    I didn’t think this movie was all that bad. Yes it definitely had its flaws but overall it wasn’t awful, in my opinion. Personally I felt that the first act was amazing playing into that fear of the unknown. I could not even imagine being a parent in that situation. Especially when your child comes back seemingly fine but you can sense something is off. After that, unfortunately, it gets kind of whacky if you ask me. But not a horrible movie by any means. Just went in a poor direction. I personally rate it a 5 or 6 out of 10. What it did right, it did really well. However what it did wrong unfortunately stands out more

This was just as much about faith itself as much as the possession that took place.
