The difference between the TRON movies is that in the first Kevin gets digitized into the maninframe system of ENCOM, while in Legacy, Kevin, based on that experience, puts a small supercomputer on the basement of his arcade place and in there he codes a simulation of a society (basically a The Sims + Cities Skylines + Garry's Mod thing) and uses the digitizing beam to get inside and interact with the simulation first-hand.

The best thing about cyberspace is that it's the one place where the rule of cool reins supreme. After all, as long as it serves the purpose of the narrative, it can look however the creators want it to look, even including how interactions are done in it. Nothing has mass unless if you want it, invisible walls might as well be a normal thing, and it doesn't matter if neon pink katana blades grow like grass next to an endless ocean of smooth glass.

The Digital World in Digimon is an interesting variation on the Cyberspace theme. It’s a parallel universe consisting of “data” as a result of Earth’s telecommunications (including the internet) and computing tech. So it’s not a one to one cyberspace to Reality like Tron or Reboot. It’s an alien world parallel and connected to our own, one which is still linked to our technology. What happens in the Digital World can disrupt not just electronics, but also even effect things like weather.
A traditional Cyberspace also exists in Digimon - we see it in Our War Game (aka part 2 of Digimon the Movie) and Revenge of Diaboromon. This cyberspace is in more in line with traditional depictions - strange imagery, floating around in a chaotic space.

    • @Cyber_kumo
      @Cyber_kumo День тому +14

Each Digimon universe is some variation of that. Adventures is supposed to be based on deleted data from the internet while Tamers is a computer program from the 80s made by college students that evolved (for the most part) on their own. The game Digimon Survivors added a twist that Digimon are mythological spirits taken physical form because of the internet.

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 День тому +8

Plus, unlike traditional virtual worlds, you can't just reset it like a video game or a computer. That's what Ken believed in Adventure 2 as he thought doing that would bring Wormmon back.
And if I remember correctly the Digital World can also do time travel. For example, in Adventure, after defeating Etemon, Tai and Koromon ended up back in the real to the time before Tai and the others went to the Digital World.
Or like in Frontier, Takuya ended up in the Dark Terminal following his humiliating defeat at the hands of Duskmon, Dark Trailmon offered him a ride back to the Real World. Instead of actually going back, he ended up going back in time to before he even boarded the train to the Digital World. His fighting spirit was literally being drained and he was haunted by a spectral image of Duskmon. To make matters worse, he was transformed into Agunimon's Rookie form, Flamemon. To prevent this from ever happening, he tried to stop himself from boarding the train to begin with.

If you’ve ever played the game Cyber Sleuth it has what I think is the most honest portrayal of what Cyberspace could be in our world. Aside from it being a Digimon game of course. In the not so distant future The Internet gets a major upgrade with the ability for VR Spacing in the Internet. Theirs tech that allows your thoughts to move your avatar in Cyberspace allowing for more in depth movement and websites now employ a 3D space to make visiting them even more engrossing.
However this also allows for an interesting exploit for hackers as now they can not only hack in the traditional way but “physically” exploit the code as well. Giving Hackers an almost super spy level of prestige. Data stealing from individuals through the usage of hostile programs essentially amounts to mugging Avatars. Theirs no traditional ability for violence meaning for those that can break past that limitation theirs no real struggle.

@@kidprime6863 In Adventure it wasn’t time travel, but time rate compression. The Digital World time is slower compared to the Real World - months in the digital world is seconds in our world. Aka Narnia Time.
Which is the source of Tai’s confusion - for him weeks had passed in the Digital World and finding himself back in the real world on the same day he left.
By the end of the series, this issue is fixed in which the time rate for both worlds are equal.

System Shock also had a neat idea of cyberspace, where various computer systems were wire-frame "rooms" with enemy programs, bits of useful data, and controls for other systems in them. They were connected by "corridors" that were sometimes only one-way. Shame mose people didn't like the gameplay there.
Also special shoutout to the Tron 2.0 game for having fun with the concept of cyberspace being a thing inside machines that exist and have properties. In one section you deal with a super-powerful killer program by having it follow you into a much older system, so it can't run as fast. In another section you "torture" a mobile device by turning on its various functions in order to drain its battery.

in Stellaris's Machine Age DLC, Machine Empires can become fully digital entities that exist on virtual server realities and interact with the physical world in ways I kinda struggle to understand. Virtual ascendance as it is called is pretty much the Ultimate playing tall method. what I mean by "playing Tall" is to have as few physical assets as possible and making increasingly efficient use of the resources you can get from those fewer assets. basically Imagine a Civilization whose entire Civilian physical existence is all on a single planet and several orbital stations around several star systems. this Civilization, while small, due to insanely efficient use of the resources it has can field military assets that are on par with Civilizations that span dozens of world and star systems. one of the best ways to "play Tall" is virtual ascendance, have a fully colonized Ringworld, a Dyson Sphere and a Matter Decompressor. I've played such an empire and dominated the game. it can take a bit of time to build up to that point however.

Historically, a lot of people assumed people would prefer to interact with the internet via a literal cyber-space, but it seems they were wrong.
Cyberpunk predicted the internet, but they usually depicted it as a literal cyberspace, programs were not people (unless they are sentient AI programs) but they were tangible objects and machines. The word "cyberspace" comes from an early Cyberpunk story.
A lot of articles about "2nd life" seemed to suggest it would grow in popularity and possibly supplant the 2D internet, at least partially. As if we would all watch youtube by moving our virtual avatar to a theatre and having them manipulate virtual video casettes rather than just clicking a thumbnail. I suppose a chatroom with a virtual room and avatars you can see is superior to text only chat, but it is also a lot more effort.
Meta was originally envisioned as a cyberspace version of Facebook, ideally done with VR. While the parent company changed its name and was heavily reorganized, the concept of Facebook but with VR was mostly abandoned.

If you’ve ever played the game Cyber Sleuth it has what I think is the most honest portrayal of what Cyberspace could be.
Theirs no traditional ability for violence meaning for those that can break past that limitation theirs no real struggle

The representation of cyberspace in the anime Serial Experiments Lain are maybe my favorite next to Tron. It's a highly stylized setting, and not as fully fleshed out as some of the others, but it's a key part of the series, and really drives some of the bigger world home.

No Megaman Battle Network references?! That was like the only example of cyberspace I knew of other than Tron. 😭
In any case, I like the idea of cyberspace as a VR or AR world where people can interact, sorta like an MMO game but not necessarily only for entertainment. Imagine being able to host a meeting with anyone from anywhere, and being able to look like anyone & project 3D images, environments, etc. to better demonstrate your ideas. Even without a group, it could become very useful to not only create the things you imagine but also to explore them with all your senses. I imagine movies, games, military or scientific training exercises, etc. would become a lot more immersive.

Tank Universal is a game that looks like the original Tron, it's a good callback. I noticed that that one ship actually looks pretty much identical to the ships in that game. Tank Universal even has the whole thing of what happens in cyberspace effects the real world, that being with a kid uploading a virus having his computer fried in the first game. Fried to the extent smoke is coming out of it.

I like how it takes the Gibsonesque vision of cyberspace, which is super cool, but also quite old, and it makes it old within the setting itself. Neuromancer style cyberspace is a future which was canceled, and it has become its own ecosystem where humans are not welcome, while the modern net is pretty much our current Internet with some augmented reality

You don't really _go inside_ it except for the final dungeon of the 3rd game, but the cyberworld from the Battle Network series certainly qualifies. It's literally an entire _universe_ in there, depicted even more so in the anime as an outright parallel of the "real" world. NetNavis are as sentient as their Operators, acting as equals and friends, and things that happen in one world affect the other quite often. It's also, arguably, the closest thing in science fiction to *_our_* world, as though we don't have sentient program companions, stuff that happens on the internet has very real effects on the physical world (hi CrowdStrike!), smartphones are essentially PETs with a better interface, and netcrime pretty much runs rampant.

A couple of cyper space like settings that I like are the Vex Network feom the Destiny Franchise and the Digital World from Digimon.
Vex Network is a more traditional looking cyberspace, but captures the vastness of a hive mind network rather well.
And where the Digital World in Digimon is cool for how it differs from most other Cyber Spaces. Looking more like it's own world evloved similar to our own, but it still has some of those tell tale signs of it being a cyper space. Including circuit board lines on things, pixelization in areas like the sky, and even bits of random data floating around.

the precursor/forerunner domain from halo is really interesting since it is not really a cyberspace at all given it is built on the fictional neural physics that is essentially sci fi magic in halo; yet it still functionally acts as a 'cyberspace' albeit one that is galaxy spanning and semi-sentient in itself

What I find enthralling is the idea of how the cyberworld will be used in the day-to-day life.
Things like working and partying, tourism and studying are obvious.
But other aspects need to be explored: It seems obvious that there'll be a tiered access system for it. Some resources will only be available for those willing -and able - to pay extra. But what resources will those be?
And what other new features, new business and entertainment, will be introduced by the advent of cyberworld?
Maybe people will make anthropological sutides based on people living completely inside the cyberworld for extended periods of time, coexisting with AIs? Maybe there'll be a new form of tourism in which you travel throught the Caribean as a dolphin, or visitthe Grand Canyon as an eagle?
I'd like to see ideas like those explored more extensively in science fiction, but the best I saw about that was the short lived Caprica. And it barely scratched the surface.
