  • In this video, I give you an update on how the new Sydney Metro stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross and Barangaroo were looking in early September 2023.
    I start with the main entrance to Crows Nest station which is on the Pacific Highway, then move to the smaller Clarke Street entrance. I also cover the Services Building and the Over Station Developments.
    Its then to the North Entrance to Victoria Cross Station which is on the corner of Miller Street and McLaren Street. This entrance is unusual in that it has lifts only, no escalators!
    Then on to the South Entrance to Victoria Cross Station on Miller Street, which is now visible with one of the lift shafts now installed. I'll cover the new laneway that will provide a pedestrian link to this entrance from Denison Street and talk about the over station developments as well.
    It's then across the harbour (on a ferry!) to look at Barangaroo Station. This is progressing really well with both the escalator and lift entrances now nearing completion. And from High Street, I was able to get some great views of these.
    I finish with a look at the Services Pods, and the gap left by the demolition of the Acoustic Shed.

    Accuracy
    I do my best to make the commentary in these videos as accurate as possible by checking facts on the internet and other sources. However, sometimes the information isn't available, so I'll use my railway knowledge and insight to explain something to the best of my ability. If accuracy is important, do check the comments, as other viewers will often pick up on things I've missed or any mistakes made. Also note that for older videos, things may change over time, causing some of the information to become out of date.
    Construction Sites, Maintenance Facilities and other Private Property
    All footage of construction sites, maintenance facilities and other private property is taken from a public vantage point. The only exception is if it's an open day or I have special permission to access the site. The iPhone's small lens and zoom function makes it easier to film through small gaps in hoardings or fencing, so it may look like I'm on site when I'm not! If you would like to know the exact filming location, then ask me in the comments.

    I was very lucky to be invited to tour the new metro platforms 26 & 27 at Central 2 weeks ago, it sure is incredible!! Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to publish the video I filmed as they are still yet to reveal the fully complete platforms.
    I also remember asking what metro station if furthest behind schedule, it was Crows Nest. They have began planning for the worst case scenario of the station opening late, but it's almost certainly going to open will all the others.
    Great video Paul! I'm glad to see that all the metro stations are getting close to completion. 😊

    Another excellent video! The Barangaroo site still having work is impressive as are those pod things.
    Good to see that Victoria Cross' "lift-only" entrance uses the glass-pane elevators and not the death traps like Wolli Creek!

    Just letting you know that I was able to access this video from the playlists page even though I'm not a patron, so you might want to fix that for future videos. Also, you said "Mount Street" instead of "McLaren Street" a few times.

      Yes that's right, and I am aware of that. It's because I add the playlists when uploading the video, rather than when I make it public. FYI: In NSW we never have apostrophes in town names. They all got removed en masse in the 1990s or 1980s. It makes things easy when spelling Kings Cross, Crows Nest and so on!

    I think the glass-enclosed areas at Barangaroo are to provide protection from the elements for the anticipated large crowds without blocking out the stunning views and natural light.
    It’ll probably be one of the busier stations on this line especially during weekends and special events like New Years Eve fireworks (don’t think I want to be taking the train from Barangaroo on that night!).
    Great update Paul.

    It is quite strange Barangaroo station will have its one entrance at the end furthest away from its commercial precinct. This is where most people who use the station will be heading.
    They also should have considered an entrance for Crows Nest station on the other side of the Pacific Hwy. A lot of new developments have occurred on this side of the highway & it would have improved access.

    I went to the city yesterday from Cherrybrook to the city. Just for fun I changed at Epping and took the CCN train which fast tracked into the city in 30 minutes. I look forward to the future where I just continue the journey right to Martin Place. Yesterday was very crowded in the streets of CBD. Light rail was jam packed. Having the metro would definitely carry large crowds with ease.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  9 місяців тому +2

      Yes the city is very busy at weekends at the moment. I went to Cherrybrook last Friday to escape the crowds and had a lovely walk around Cumberland State forest! Yes, being able to go direct to the CBD without changing will really benefit existing Metro NW users, and I think it will give this part of the line a big boost in patronage too.

    Wow, it’s crazy to think Crows Nest is getting a metro stop. I grew up in Cammeray (just one suburb away) and Cammeray was always such a local, quiet suburb, while Crows Nest was only slightly busy, but a local hidden gem, full of restaurants but still residential - and was a sort of restaurant hub for families who lived close by.
    Weird to think of Crows Nest becoming a bit of a destination suburb for people across Sydney now. It seemed so uncool and sleepy growing up.

    Great video Paul - superb research and investigation.
    As an interested local resident you’ve filled many a gap in my knowledge about what is going on just down the road.
    The funny thing is that due to almost duplication there will be many a local resident with a luxury of public transport choice to make their way from Crows Nest/St Leonard’s to North Sydney: bus on the Pacific Highway, or Miller Street; heavy rail from St Leonards; or Metro from Crows Nest.
    What next?
    I say let’s also add a light rail, cable car, and of course, a MONORAIL! 😂😉

    that is interesting the lift only northern entrance at vic cross. a rarity across even the sydney trains network? as you mentioned the original plans were a services building so last minute so to speak but to alleviate congestion at the main entrance?

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  9 місяців тому

      I don't think reducing congestion at the main entrance was the reason. It happened when the services building changed location. It was originally going to be on the west side of Miller Street. Its now opposite the council offices, so that may be one of the reasons why there is an entrance here. Its also close to existing and new apartment buildings, so it does make sense to have an entrance here.

    Thank you for the video updates.
    If the line is opened in late May 2024 (similar time to the Northwest line) then there is only 8 more months to go.
    I wonder if the majority of the constructions can be finished in 7 months with an extra month for touching up.

      The latest I've heard is opening between July and October next year. It would have been lovely to see it open in late May (as that would be 5 years after Metro NW opened), but I doubt this will happen. And if it does, I'll be in the UK for a holiday

      Hi Jack, the bus stops on Pacific Highway will be relocated, but it won't be a true interchange. It will be similar to the bus / train interchange at St Leonards.

      Afaik no bus routes will start or finish at Crows Nest, so there's no need for a bus/train interchange as such. Just standard roadside bus stops will be sufficient. Bus route 144 runs very frequently between Crows Nest and Neutral Bay Junction, where you can transfer to the Northern Beaches B-Line service.

      @@user-mb3dx3nn5c The whole point is that metro is supposed to be transformative. The metro stops could become hubs for frequent fast buses (and trams), getting lots of people out of their cars and getting traffic (including buses) off the bridge/tunnel. Otherwise what is the point of spending billions?

    • @user-mb3dx3nn5c
      @user-mb3dx3nn5c 9 місяців тому

      @@jack2453 Afaik all current metro stations are served by buses. Some have purpose built bus/train interchanges for terminating bus routes, others like Crows Nest don't as no buses terminate there (and there's no space to build one there anyway). As for bus frequency, this can be increased if demand is there. Regarding bus speed, this depends on how much priority is given to buses over other traffic. They are spending billions to provide a direct rail link from Sydney's northwest to the CBD, serving other employment, education and retail centres enroute. However, I'm doubtful whether this will reduce traffic on the harbour bridge and tunnel.

      I think they can also do a branch line to somewhere (eg hurstville), since bankstown wouldn't warrant a full service to ether rouse hill or northern beaches, probs do like every rotation service to bankstown to northern beaches and rouse hill to hurstville or vice versa.
