My wife and I own a 2021 Atlas Cross Sport with the 3.6L VR-6, 8-speed transmission, SE trim w/technology package. We got ours in Tourmaline Blue finish, 20” wheels and Pirelli tires. WE LOVE OURS !!!!
Just bought one over the cheaply made Palisade. The ride quality was 10 times better and the vehicle is more solid. Extremely happy with this vehicle. I am 49, kids are grown and it has all the space I need .
I own an Atlas and sell them. We have the 3 row as this was not available. It is selling like crazy and we have nearly run out of Cross Sport vehicles to sell. They will take off in this market.
I recently purchase this vehicle and traded my 2018 SQ5. I absolutely love this vehicle. The ride is perfect, the style is exceptional and i get complements at literally every gas station stop. More importantly it is by far better then its competition on multiple fronts. kudos to VW and I thank they have something here!
i just bought one and love it. I also had a Santa Fe 2.0 Turbo 7 yrs ago. Loved the luggage space in santa fe and VW managed to create something similar. The room for my kids in the back seat is crazy. Great for long drives.
After test driving a few SUVs the VW felt so much nicer to drive. Everytime I see a telluride or palisade I'm thankful I bought my Atlas RLine. Beautiful inside and out. It needs about 50 lbs of torque and hp to be the perfect vehicle but a 9 out of ten ain't bad, and atleast it doesn't look like a GMC ripoff like the Kia.
We bought the 2020 Atlas S V6. 7 passenger. 3rd row. Did not pay 50k. Wanted an SUV to get away from minivans. Younger high school kids nearly 6'5" and felt like the VW Atlas offered the most head room and leg room. Also like the side airbags it came with. Ohio
Literally spent yesterday negotiating a price for this vehicle, same trim. We have an Odyssey for full family duty, but I still wanted something spacious because car seats are still a factor. I also just like VW. While I considered the 3 row Atlas, like a previous commenter, every inch counts in my smallish garage and I am doubtful the third row would be used often enough with us also having the minivan. Coming to you from MD. Thanks for your content, and glad you’re better and back at it!
I am glad I saw this video. Soooo glad! Dave, again you brought out some very good points about the Atlas Cross Sport as well as all of the mid-segment cross overs. No need for me to waist my time test driving the VW. Thanks my friend.
Bought mine 2 fridays ago. It's exactly like the one in the video. I never thought I'd own a vw but I'm now a believer... such a nice vehicle! I really have no major complaints other than the stereo is a little chiv standard but not terrible. I'm hoping when my lease is up vw has a more performance based engine option.
Great review here MotoMan, you a make a point about these I'd like to expand on, regarding the design of this Cross Sport. I absolutely love Coupe styled SUVs/Crossovers for the reason that they offer a design focused approach to a segment that is mostly made up of forgettable people movers, and by co-opting traditional coupe attributes can then create something rather radical (think Acura ZDX). I also like that while styling is a matter of opinion and taste, I love when automakers get daring and create something truly wacky like the Nissan Cross Cabriolet. I don't understand the vitriol and hatred expressed by those on the internet who bemoan the popularity of the (often bland designed) SUV/Crossover and then when an marque introduces a model meant to challenge this blandness they are more often than not, chastised for the entire effort. It just doesn't make sense to me, because coupe styled SUVs/Crossovers fix or at least modify a typically boring people mover, and in turn create something new and different.
We currently have a first gen Tiguan and a first gen Edge with two kids (10 and 7) and a few large dogs (who dont do car rides often). I find the size of the Tiguan is near perfect (only issue is having to put the back seat down to fit my golf clubs). I do like the idea of more space for "things" but in reality the smaller size is just so much nicer to drive. My father just traded his Grand Cherokee in for a Macan and that feels similar as a near perfect size. Personally the next replacement for either would most likely be the ID.4.
I'm interested in the top package, but it only comes with the V6. So I'm a bit torn between engine and features at this point, because I live at high altitude and would generally prefer the turbo because of that. Other reviewers complained about the transmission on the V6, saying it was overly-eager to get into higher gears and made for jerky acceleration when starting from stop. They said this wasn't present in the 4 cylinder turbo. Curious if you noticed that? I'd just get the Telluride but they're still being marked up 3-5k.
Not a bad 2 row SUV, but for slightly more I bought my wife a Lexus RX 350 that looks and drives magnificently with full panoramic sunroof and a way better interior. We’ve owned 3 row SUV’s in the past but like others have already stated we didn’t use the 3rd row but just a handful of times and it didn’t fit in our attached garage as well as the RX does.
Atlas vs cross sport: the cross sport handles significantly better. Less boat like, better agility, more stable, more fun and less sway in the wind. I would take the cross sport any day of the week. Absolutely beautiful
I'm thinking of trading-in my S3 to accomodate my recently acquired dog and possibly kid on the way. However, I've been let down by the hard plastic interior that makes the care feels cheap on the inside.
I'll be surprised if they sell many of these. Bring the Tourareg back in PHEV form, and that'll be worth it. They talked of having a PHEV Atlas Cross Sport a couple years ago, and I'd go for that, too. But ICE only? No way, VW...
The ending was great. “What a jackass... but why take me seriously with a horn like that?” Agreed that horn is horrendous in a car that at least has sport looking intentions lol.
VW is marketing and pricing Cross Sport as an upscale 5 seater, but it’s hard to reconcile Tiguan- their cheaper crossover- having a nicer interior. If you have 40k to spend, why not just but a fully loaded Tig than settle for a mid trim plastic-clad Atlas?
the big body looks I guess I was between the Cross Sport and Tiguan R line fasho the Tiguan had better interior/more tech for the buck but there is something of the looks of the Atlas Cross Sport especially with the Pure Grey color with the V6:)
Mmmmm burgers .... (Insert Homer Simpson drooling gif here). You're spot on about the trim, M. The somewhat generic design is of the dashboard doesn't help either. Its as if 95% of the budget went into the seats and the rest of the interior had to duke it out for the remaining crumbs. I had the same idea when you mentioned the price of the Atlas Sport & the Touareg, so I looked it up and holy moly, the new Touareg starts at an equivalent of $78k here. On a side note, I think we have a new record for the longest See Wald segment lol . . . :P As always, excellent work, M.
I do not really understand the technical characteristics of these machines, but I can say with confidence that I would not refuse to take one at home ahaha
Are you honestly comparing a four-door SUV hatchback to a Porsche McKahn, which is probably half the weight and is by no means a competitive car ? Did you mention McLaren? You want a vw suv to be like a mclaren? I get it we all do but to be honest with you. This is not a true heartfelt review because you’re comparing it to things that are in classes things that are totally out of its league 100%.
well...the reason we buy these smaller, 2 rows is because of garage sizes. i cannot fit the larger 3 rows in and i NEVER use the third row. ever. and this is a large 2 row.
I was just about to post this. Right now we are trying to find something that can tow 4000-5000lbs and still fit in the garage. This Crossport is a bit too large still though. X3, Q5, Macan are better sized for that though.
Fun fact - they don't come to Germany - some models are not sold over here in the "Mutterland" like the Atlas. Handsome? that lies more in the eye of the beholder I guess.
Families are smaller, our houses and garages are smaller, and the ladies and gentlemen looking at this segment likely aren't comfortable driving something "bus-like" with 3 rows. In the instance of a larger family, there is likely a second vehicle that is larger like a truck.
Motoman, Please, Please stop with baby buggy comments when you review SUVs. I am 64 years old, retired, moved to Scottsdale from Pasadena. I never had kids, have not had anyone under 24 years old in my cars. I drive an executive car but I want more space. I carry my golf bag and this will allow me to take 3 friends and their golf equipment. It will allow my wife and I to travel with the items we need for a 2 or 3 week trip. I do not need 3 rows. I don't want a Turbo Porsche, the city is very active with traffic cameras and traffic cops. Also who I going to impress in a neighborhood with 6 Rolls Royce. So if you are reviewing SUVs, please expand your perspective on the drivers interested in these vehicles.
The horn is an absolute joke. You're right on there. The V6 power is okay, but again nothing to get excited about. The interior is, as you said, crap. There's nothing special about it. I also have a 2011 Touareg TDI Executive and it has beautiful interior. Something one would expect from a German vehicle. The window sticker price for the 2011 Touareg TDI Executive in 2011 was $59,000 and I believe it was worth it. We just bought the 2020 Atlas cross sport SE all wheel drive 6 cylinder and it cost $48,000. I do believe it is overpriced. We live in Lawrence Kansas. My wife shows dogs and the reason she liked this vehicle is that the back seats fold down flat and will accommodate crates for the dogs and all of her show supplies plus with the 5000 pound tow capacity she can tow her 3000 pound travel trailer when she goes to shows. Also, we live in the country and the roads are dirt and gravel. In the winter the roads don't always get plowed until a few days after it snows. So having all wheel drive it's a necessity out there. We don't have kids and we don't take people out in the back seats very often so 3rd row seating was definitely not needed for our lifestyle. Gas mileage is not impressive. I think the best we've done is around 20 to 23 on the highway. My overall impression of the vehicle is that it's ok. Its not for me, but my wife likes it a lot. She happy. That's all that matters to me.
the towing capacity is a joke....why can the bigger Atlas tow less than the Touareg??? makes no sense! and I would love to see a diesel, but will probably never happen :((
Never understood why car maker go cheap on interior materials, especially anything over 40 grand. A couple of hundred bucks won't be noticed by the consumer. Always my biggest complaint about Chevy products, especially the decades of Corvettes. Even new models Chevy trucks and Camaros' interiors are cheap looking. Weird.
Im sorry, but it is clear that your many reviews of million dollars car have made you very picky. This car is excellent compared to a Ford ka or any Renault. But compared to a Ford Gt and a Ferrari this is a shitty car yes. But budget wise - great car.
Can see why you would think that, Anders, but respectfully disagree. My issue with the dash & door tops of this vehicle is based on my time with very similar vehicles. Have a look at any of my Hyundai or Kia episodes. A US$32,000 Telluride, Palisade or even the Mazda CX-9 has far materials in these same spots. The rest of the vehicle, as you have seen in the episode, yes, great car.
Agreed, I just test drive a similar priced Explorer, and the sun literally made the interior shine different colors, the VW is modern and clean looking with a beautiful infotainment screen, and great layout of buttons and accessories. They put the money on the more important parts like the screen and center consoles. Beyond that they don't feel like tanks while you're driving them, which for the size and price is pretty impressive in it's own right.
I own one of these. It is wonderful but that horn is a joke for sure. Even my daughter's 2020 Tiguan is much more respectable. This is like Road Runner's sound. Embarrassing sometimes.
They work for smaller families . We have one child and a dog , so this would work for us . Who cares about room for the mother in law, lol . We need room for bags and my gear . I just wish it had a nicer looking interior for the price and don’t get me started on that weak a$$ horn . Florida , gulf coast .
I think it looks great but I too would like to have real exhausts or at least have them look real enough. But the RLines look the best in white, black tints and black rims. Gorgeous

Ontario Canada. Bought 2021 Cross Sport. Love it. Only complaint is the fuel consumption!
We just bought a 2021 cross sport SE with tech in pyrite silver. It only has 20k miles on it. It’s fantastic.
I leased this exact same model, same color. Was lucky to even find it in this color, they fly off the lots. I’m loving it so far.
3 Row Atlas with captain chairs, rear climate controls and extra vents...sounds way better to me! Woof
Kumo has been in a convertible mood as of late . . . :)

@@IamJay02 I like GMC designs better actually, but I'll tell you I do like the new Kia Sorento, really nice.

VW Audi Porsche is just a German GM.which makes VW a Chevy equivalent. Which makes this a 50 K Chevy that isn’t a pickup truck.
