Not sure if it was in any other Codex but 8th ed had a little lore bit where Abaddon found a lost company of Luna Wolves who had become changed. When he approached them they were sure he was going to kill them for being this way, but instead he gives them the offer of joining the Black Legion.
I honestly think they have managed to improve Abaddon’s character over the years, but I still don’t think he should be the “main villain” and flawless tactically genius but a great faction leader. His scene in Saturnine was awesome!

Is he the man who succeeds where Horus failed, forging a new legion from the ashes of the original 9 traitor legions and pulling together the forces of Chaos while treading the fine line between slave to darkness and ally of convenience to the Dark Gods? Is he just another Chaos lord who stands at the top by virtue of the relics he carries, walking down the same path Horus tread? Or is he a man who was deceived into pushing the Sons of Horus into true damnation? After all, Horus was going to become the 5th Chaos god - the Dark King - had he slain the Emperor at Terra, and since Abaddon didn't know about that, what's to say that the daemons calling Horus a failure to him wasn't a lie to push him down the path to selling out his last bond to his legion brothers and sacrificing them to the gods, leaving him as exactly what he thought Horus to be - a deluded, Warp-infested pawn leading a ravening horde of Chaos marines with no higher loyalty to the gods?
