Another great video. Altra please bring back the Dual 1.0!!! Lastly, do I see Newton's on them walls? So cool!
Great review - your always insightful videos seem to have more snap and polish. The Rivera 2 looks fantastic!
Thank you for watching!
Good stuff! I won a pair of the original Riveras from a local running store last year. Though I'm more a fan of the wider escalante, the River didn't feel overly narrow to me. Felt comfortable and bouncy on the few runs I used it on; though I seem to remember my feet getting a little sore in it after while. Think I need a few more test runs before I give it a final verdict; but leaning more on the positive side.
It's a great shoe!
Perfect timing! My Riveras just tore from the sole after 700+ miles were put on them. Basketball with the son was the assailant. I'll be out soon to snag a pair for sure.
Great timing! Thanks for watching
I enjoy the Rivera! I like to use the Escalante Racer for workouts and the Torin for recovery and LSD. The Rivera is a great daily when a recovery shoe is too soft but you need a bit more than an Escalante Racer. Can you tell when you plan on posting about the Vanish Carbon?
Got my pair today. Would agree that a nice but subtle tune up of the original. Step in feel is more reassuring than I remember from the original and lockdown comes more easily with the different heel and the laces have a bit more grip as well for me.
Glad to hear you are liking them!
Ooh, I've been looking forward to hearing about this one. The main issue I had with the original Rivera was the heel lock. Based on your review, it sounds like I wasn't alone with that. Definitely going to give a pair of 2s a shot once they're out. Appreciate your taking time to share your thoughts on them!
They definitely took customer feedback into account on the heel lock! Thanks for watching!
Great review, as always, Steve! Curious how the ground feel compares to the Torin 4. More squishy, less squishy, or about the same?
All of the updates look pretty good. One thing you didn't mention is the stitching in the upper. One of my complaints about version one is kind of a "baggy" fit, (which is weird because I do most of my miles in the escalante racer and that's a wider toebox) especially in the transition from midfoot into the toebox. That stitching along the sides will probably help with the overall fit of the upper.
Yes they have definitely made improvements on the upper!
Love your Altra reviews! Usually first on the web and the most in-depth. Been an Altra runner for some time now and currently in the Provision 6 (based on your review) and I enjoy the slight support it provides. Been waiting for the Rivera 2 to come out as I am looking for a shoe to run in on speed days. Loved previous versions of the Torin, but 5 was not for me. You mentioned that this may not be the shoe for Overpronators. What would you suggest if that is my case? Would love to stay in the Altra family, but not married to it.
Overpronation can be corrected with either of Altras stability models, the Paradigm and the Provision. Both have guide rail technology built into the midsole that will compensate for both pronation and supination. Those are the two models that will actively correct your overpronation and push you back onto the middle of your foot. So I would suggest sticking with your Provision and if you are looking for something with more cushion, then give the paradigms a shot!
I have the first Riveras and really like them, but tiny pebbles get caught in the treads in the middle of the sole. Had the same problem with the Duos but not my Escalante Racers.
Is there a bit better arch support in the Rivera 2 than was in the Rivera? The original Rivera ran both too wide in heel and midfoot for me and didn't seem to have as firm an arch support as my Provisions. I DO LIKE the idea of the slim footbed design in the Rivera 2s so that is why I was thinking of trying them.
Great review Steve-as usual. You mentioned other Altra shoes perhaps better suited to those with pronation issues. Which Altra in your view is best for supinators? Thanks.
The two shoes that would compensate for supination are the provision 6 or paradigm 6. Both of these models have guiderail technology that will bump you back onto the middle of your foot if you either supinate or pronate. The provision is mid cushion and the paradigm is max cushion!
I just bought Solstice XT 2 online and have the heel slipping issue. So this might be a solution for me! Thanks.
Thanks for the review! Very insightfull! Do you think these are appropriate for agility oriented exercises as well? I'm preparing for physical trials and need new shoes. Never wore altra. I'll have running tests, but also agility stuff like the Illinois drill. Are these good for those tight corners and direction inversions, or would stability be an issue?
These would be good for agility-oriented exercise, the low stack height and stability should help. Thanks for watching!
I had to retire my Altra Rivera after 700km because the upper mesh got torn on the inner sides. I hope the new upper is better in that regard, because if it was for the rest of the shoe I could probably had done 500km more without problems.
The upper on the Rivera 2 is definitely more sturdy than the original, so that is good news for you!
Great review as always, thank you! Do you have any plans to review the Escalante 3?
Absolutely we will! Unfortunately, that won't be until the beginning of April.
@@RunMoore that’s ok! I think I can handle a couple of months more!
I am hesitating to purchase it. I was wondering if I can use them for sprint training. Because I do athletics and mostly sprint(but you should know that for pure sprint we do put on spikes).
I tried these on and they only felt narrow in the heel and mid, toe box felt fine, I think this model runs short though.
Sweet review! Are the Rivera 2s good for longer distances as well?
Like any mid-cushion shoe, they can handle almost any distance as long as you are comfortable. I have found Riveras to be comfortable for up to 13 miles, but some people can run much longer in a lower cushion shoe.
I'm in Sydney. Had to send my pair of these back 2day sadly. My big toe was touching the front and to up size by half then the whole shoe is too loose..... 😔
Great review! I’ve never worn Altra - any idea how the Rivera compares width-wise to other brands generally? Basically, is this a narrow shoe, or just “narrow for Altra” but still wider than average? Looking for a lower drop light shoe for HIIT workouts, possibly considering Kinvara 13 as well.
They are narrow for Altra, which is still wider than a typical shoe. Definitely a bit wider than the Kinvara toebox, plus it has a lower stack height than the Kinvara, which makes it better for workouts with lateral movement.
@@RunMoore this is exactly what I needed, thanks!
Me again! Local run store will be having an altra demo on Monday, but weirdly it sounds like they won’t have the new Rivera. If I’m new to the brand and leaning Rivera is there a particular one you’d recommend to test approximate fit and feel? I think they’ll have the provision Rivera and torin ( shop may have others just to fit). 🤷🏻♂️
@@michaellopour7409 My favorites for daily and gym training are the solstice xt2 and riviera2. Gettin my first timp 3s next week. They are all very similar in size and just got some small differences
Appreciate the review! I caught a comment you had regarding pronation and this model being better for neutral…I tend to supinate/wear out the outer sides of my shoes. Which Altra’s would I want to check out? Also: do you have any shoes that might work better for rucking? Appreciate any feedback!
For supination, I would suggest the Provision 6. It has stability on both the inside and outside of your foot to prevent supination or pronation.
@@RunMoore much obliged; I will check them out!
One follow up: any adjustment to sizing on the Provision 6 if I wear a 10.5 in an LP5?
Do these fit true-to-size?
When he says they’re the most narrow is he speaking about the toe box or the entire shoe?
Thanks for the great video!...I´d like to know how it compares with the Paradigm that I´d bought. Regards
Thanks for watching. The Paradigm is a stability model, while the Rivera is a neutral model. So the paradigm has guide rails to compensate for supination and pronation. The Rivera does not have this stabilizing technology and will allow your foot to be positioned naturally. The other main difference is the cushioning. The Rivera is a mid-cushion shoe and the paradigm is max-cushion. The paradigm has more cushioning that is very plush, while the cushioning in the Rivera is lighter and more responsive. The toe box of the Rivera is also going to be more narrow than the paradigm!
@@RunMoore ah, thanks a lot, yeah feels very cushioned specially compared to my other Altra road shoes, the Solstice.
@@CristianMolina The Rivera will definitely have more cushion than the Solstice
I’m debating between these altra Rivera 2’s and the escalante 3’s. Which do you think is better for everyday workouts and general daily activities (grocery shopping, going to college, etc.)?
The Rivera is probably a little bit better if you will be wearing them all day, just because of the extra cushion they provide. It also depends on how much width you need in your shoe. If you have a very wide foot, the Escalante would be the better option, while the slightly more narrow Rivera may be better for lateral movement gym workouts.
@@RunMoore Alright then, thank you 🙏🏼
Hey Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Will you be doing review for Solstice XT 2, Escalante Racer?
If we can get our hands on the demo, we do our best to get one up.
If I’ve been using the solstice and that shoes just about the right tollbox size for me would this Rivera be too narrow?
The Solstice is a standard fit, while the Rivera is a slime fit, so it will be more narrow than the Solstice.
Hi is the midsole. Does it feels like the escalante 2.5 or is it firmer, softer etc?
The Rivera 2 has a softer cushion than the Escalante 2.5!
Hey ! Can you tell me pls about the heel. The heel cup.Any hard/brutal material inside like plastic or somthing else?or its soft material?I have a small deformity at the end of achiles tendon and can`t use anything with hard conter heel at the back.Thx alooot.
The heel cup is soft and doesn't have any plastic plating in it. It is great for sensitive achilles and heels.
Does this shoe have a removable insole and would you say it is true to size compared to Asics, for example?
Yes, all running shoes have a removable insole. The Rivera tends to run a little small but so do some Asics models. You would likely need to half size up in the Rivera.
Am I the only one who really doesn't like knit uppers like those on the Escalante? For me the Rivera 2 is a no brainer choice if I don't want to be sliding off the platform - looking forward to getting these to add to the Torin 5's which have their own (fixable) issues - Oh Altra please up the quality control - the philosophy is sound zero drop foot-shaped toebox but let down by badly thought out uppers and lacing which can be hit or miss in the box (too short / too long / mis-matched pairs) - As always thanks for the review Steve
There is definitely less structure in shoes with a knit upper! Altra is taking customer feedback into account to make improvements on future models! Thanks for watching.
What is the width?
Original came in 2E width in the toe box, but D for foot shape.
Is this the same?
The width is consistent with the original model, yes.
Do you know if altra has a narrow trail shoe? A sort of Rivera trl? :-)
There is currently no trail shoe that is slim fit like the Rivera. All the current trail models are either original or standard fit.
I tried Altra shoes once, the Escalante and found it too narrow, yeah the toebox is rounded but the width of the shoe is a narrow as any other shoe.
The Escalante is in the Standard FootShape size. This means it will be wider than a D width, but not as wide as a 2E. We recommend trying a Via Olympus if you need more width. The Original FootShape toebox fits close to what a 3E width would be. We have had multiple people who measure as an extra-wide fit well in the Via. Otherwise, the Torin and Paradigm are great alternatives because they are offered in a wide option.
How breathable is the upper? Can you see light passing through?
The upper is nice and breathable! You are able to see light passing through it!
Quick question, to anyone who might know: any news or rumors about a new version 3? Just curious, cause I found a couple of online retailers that offer huge discounts on the Rivera 2. Tempted to pull the trigger, the other contenders for medium cushioned low drop daily trainers on my short list would cost me 50% more...:/
Yes, the new Rivera 3 is coming out soon but not until February. I am not sure why folks are selling them that cheap because the 2 will be current for a few months. P.S. - the Rivera 3 is going to be awesome and worth the wait if you can make it that long.
@@RunMoore Thanks! Pulled the trigger on the Rivera 2. $90 was too hard to pass up. For all I know that's the normal retail price here in Europe though, I guess I've gotten used to seeing $150 daily trainers. Anyway, at the rate I'm running these days, my pair of Rivera 2's will be due for replacement by February. We'll see though, I just read somewhere the expected retail price is $180. Seems like a rather pessimistic prediction, but still...
Is the tongue padded in the Rivera 2?
Yes!
What is a comparable Hoka shoes to this?
This would be comparable to the Hoka Mach 5.
Which size width is comparable the D or EE
@@sethmarksberry1881 The Rivera would be closer to the 2E Mach
I have 6 pairs of the original Rivera. Went to the store and tried this one, EXTREMELY NARROW. Couldn’t get a good fit even .5 size up. Altra messed this one up.
We are sorry to hear that!
Ahoy ahoy
these colors are hideous
