the way you explained EQ was so easily understandable, i can't believe i understood everything you said, even when i havent worked with audio a lot. thank you so much!
This is amazing. I'm an online voice actor and I've been struggling to EQ my audio, and this is a huge step forward. Now I'm cringing at how bad my previous EQ settings sounded.
So many of these tutorials are too long. But this one was a true masterpiece. Effective, clear, valuable and exactly what I was looking for. I finally got the solution I have been looking for. Thanx. U rock.
So, I was approached recently to record a child's celebration of life for the family. I'm no professional, but I have a little more experience and better equipment than the person who usually live streams the church services from a phone, and there wasn't really money to hire a true professional, so I did what I could to help. The audio didn't come out terrible, but some last-minute problems with tying into the sound board left me no choice but to rely on my backup audio, a mic I placed close to the front of the room. I'm still working on it, but even just the degree of improvement I was able to make almost immediately to the audio from watching this tutorial is a night-and-day kind of difference, and I have never really done anything with equalizers before in my life. Thank you so much. I know it's maybe a small thing in the course of world events, but I am going to be able to make something so much better for a grieving family because of your video.
just saved me hours upon hours in the studio going take for take trying to get the best rich sound without the clutter. very simply explained and shown in real time. im blown away with the results. i feel like i can maximize my craft with this newfound precision. thank you so much.
Alex, thanks so much for your channel. I don't even know what I don't know until I watch your videos and now my podcast and videos are beginning to sound so much better. Truly, thanks.
Alex. Thanks for all of these kick ass videos! Guys and I are stationed here in Japan and even though I have a few years of film under my belt, I still have tons to learn and this hit the mark. We release our first comedy skit here in a few weeks but thanks to this, I can nail our audio more. Much love from Japan!!!
Excellent tut, Alex. Never occurred to me to accentuate the annoying frequencies first before reducing them, but then that's why I watch your channel 👍
This is fantastic Alex! As a videographer, I've always touched upon audio enough just to get by, but you explain this in such a straight forward way that we can all learn from, and now my audio is sounding better...still got a lot to learn so I'll be binge watching your videos this weekend! Keep up the great work! 😁👍
This was clearly explained and really useful. I've struggled with EQing for years! It might have been helpful to compare the final result with the previously unEQed track, but tat's just me being picky. Excellent lesson!
Super helpful. Thanks for sharing. I also LOVE your sound pack of whooshes I purchased a few months ago. Super high quality and so much variety of whooshes to choose from.
ik im late but your teaching structure paired with visuals etc is literally perfect. I could show this to my dog and he'd qualify for a job at Izotope Inc. Immediate sub
Hi! I'm a new subscriber to your channel, Alex. I saw you on a recent episode of Potato Jet and want to learn a lot more about sound sweetening, and other sound design areas. I like what you've shared so far! Thanks.
Absolutely fantastic! Very informative, clear and right to the point. I really appreciate your channel Alex. I am glad that I found you with potato jet.
I really love this video. Clear and easy to understand. I'm looking for learning material on how to mix source (diegetic) music for film, so that it matches the source in a believable way (a radio in small kitchen, a house party, a big club). If you would do a video on that or know of any others I would be so thankful!
thx alex, very informative video ! That's exactly what i needed to know about EQ-ing the voice in my videos... Now i have to apply than ! Question : do you do your EQ with headphones or speakers ? My Headphones are Sennheiser and my speakers are PreSonus Eris. thx !!!
It's generally best to use speakers over headphones while processing your sound, including EQ and particularly if you're working in an acoustically treated room. Because headphones directly deliver the sound to your ears, it's very easy to overly focus on little problems and thus over EQ. Many lower-cost headphones also tend to sound boxy which can cause one to cut more in the 500hz range than is necessary. However, the key is to understand, how what you're listening through be it speakers or headphones, translates to other speakers (or earbuds, headphones etc.) Just like many TVs can look different in color and contrast,, warmth etc, speakers are the same with sound and it's good to listen on multiple sets to give a better representation about what is actually happening sonically. I suggest EQ using your speakers and listen to how they sound on your headphones and vice-versa. It's also important to listen back at consistent volume levels. Perhaps a video on speaker/volume calibration is in order Alex?
Haha, if you're working in FCP all of this stuff still totally translates! It's just really hard to collaborate with FCP because it doesn't talk to other programs very well (DaVinci for color, Pro Tools for sound, etc). If you're using it as a standalone you'll be totally fine! But when you want to start working with a post sound person/team, it's really challenging getting material out of FCP compares to Avid or Premiere.
Alex Knickerbocker FCPX works with Resolve really well back and forth, much better than Premiere > Resolve. But yes, FCPX needs an additional third-party plugin to go out to ProTools.
I beg to differ. FCPX has great built in EQs, including one with live freq analysis. Many of these come straight out of Logic X. You can also get great plugins from the lakes of waves.com or accusonis.com and others. Additionally using FCPX Roles and Compound clips facilitate very useful and flexible way to apply your tuning steps to multiple clips.
Really appreciate these tips Alex, and of course really just putting this video together. I know the work that goes into tutorials, even when you know what you're doing 😉 Forward momentum brother 👊🎙️
Why is it that final cut’s audio tools aren’t great? I’ve been playing around with it and i quite like it but I’ve been having more trouble with the audio than I ever did in premiere. Would doing my audio work in a different program be worth while? And also than you so much for these videos, I’ve been getting so much out of them.
Glad the info is helpful!! Final Cut as a standalone editing program will do the job for less complex projects, but it really falls short (as of FCP X, FCP7 used to be solid) when it comes to working with a sound teams...and audio in general. Its shortfalls are less about the plugins and more about the overall workflow. Premiere has its quirks too, but can at least export AAF/OMF files for use in audio software without too much hassle. FCP just isn't nearly as flexible. I'd recommend checking out Pro Tools First to start with, and possibly Reaper (just because it's cheap). But Pro Tools is really the way to go for post sound in the long term. If you want to stay entirely in a video editing program, Avid Media Composer is industry standard. Not for the faint of heart, but probably the best editing program you can get!
@@axk It's been hugely helpful. I've been a photographer for years and I only got into making videos about 3 years ago and audio has been the steepest learning curve. I think that the information that's out there when it comes to audio is either too dense and confusing for a beginner or just down right incorrect. The videos you've put out are just what I needed, keep it up and you've got a fan for life! I'll have a look into your suggestions and thanks so much for taking to time to reply.
@@axk It's sad to see that most of the world of filmmaking still makes fun of FCP. FCP just requires an utility to export to AAF - I don't think it's that big of a deal. I actually know many big people in the filmmaking indutry that actually uses (and love) FCP. I'm sure you didn't mean't it as hate - but i think that everyone can agree that alot of people make unnecessary fun of Final cut. Do you think Logic Pro is bad for mixing or? Anyways lovely video! - btw, this is a great video on the topic; ua-cam.com/video/gEtqyfTx_jU/v-deo.html
Very helpful video, Alex. Would have been more so had you switched the EQ in and out several times after all the adjustments so we could hear the overall impact. Thanks, nevertheless.
So informative! For podcasts, when should I Match Loudness in my workflow? I have read to do it AFTER all your editing, normalizing, compression..etc and I have heard to do it FIRST to bring up all of the frequencies and master. Thank you!
I gotta admit, I thought Audio was hard. For Years. Now that I found your channel it all seems so clear - just like my voice recordings thanks to you! Anyways, I'm having issues with my AT2020 picking up S-Sounds way too sharp. The mics distance to my mouth is around 20-30cm, while I feel like 30cm is the maximum range I should go for cause otherwise the reverb is getting way too much. On the other hand, the DeEsser doesn't really help to solve my problem. Does anyone have a suggestion?
This is literally the best, most concise video about EQ on UA-cam. Period.
FOR REAL, I just spent 3 hours digging through confusing content
Yeah, I've watched a bunch but nothing is a pedagogic and educational as this!
Two years after posting, it’s still easily the best video out there on the subject! Excellent video!
Didn't know Serj Tankian was a UA-camr, a good one
lmao
Yeah man inwas thinking the same
It was the first thing I was going to write ahahahh
Dude, I was going to say the same thing. He's a dead ringer.
I’ve never seen a video where someone EQ’s their voice WHILE the video, which is explaining how to EQ, plays, until now. Best tutorial.
I really appreciate that the adjustments you demonstrate can be audibly heard in the video as it's shown visually 🙏
Really helpful info presented in a very clear way - thanks Alex!

Dude, thank you. I’ve been putting off learning eq due to fear of being confused. This video made it so simple but didn’t dumb it down. Thank you
Awesome! Glad this helped!
I watched several videos trying to get a handle on what an eq does. You're the first one who explained it. Cheers
That type of a content that receives an instant like from me, even without watching a vid first.
Thank you Alex, very informative and helpful video!
Just trying to help!! Glad you're enjoying and (hopefully) getting some useful info, thanks for watching!
I wish i had found this video before all the others i have watched. Such a great explanation of EQ. You explain it so well!! Thanks.
I work with eq daily. But in my few years as a producer... This was a clear and nice presentation. Great work!

this has to be one of the best mixing tutorials on UA-cam. mixing is not as complex as people like to make it.
love your Videos! can you do one about mixing next? for example how loud should different types of Recordings be in your final Video?
This is the clearest and most concise dive into EQ on then planet. Bless you Alex.
Just trying to help however I can! Did you get your pre and comp hooked up??

Discovered you from Gene's channel. Great stuff man. Subbed!!!
Sidney Diongzon yea me too. He’s such a pro!
Finally! I've heard SEVERAL explanations but no real reasoning on why they were doing what they were doing. Thank YOU!
Quick Sidenote- Your voice wasn't annoying Sir, it was very helpful. I've subscribed.
Wow, Alex. The way you explained! Thank you! Can't wait to make my videos sound better!
Glad the videos are helping!!
