Something that always bothered me was that Groves was not the leader of the expedition, he was a hero in the battle of pirates of the Caribbean 1, he helped the East Indies and survived the battle in the maelstrom, anyone would imagine that all those feats would be worth it the title of Admiral at least and many medals on his chest. But in Stranger Tides he ended up being one more servant, his entire military life was spent receiving orders from Norrigton, Becket and now Barbossa, it is sad that someone so loyal to the crown and the king did not receive the promotion he deserved. Groves deserved his own ship and his crew, not everyone survives all those battles
Even in his death he was loyal to the crown and tried to claim that land in the name of King George, Gillette also deserved something more, maybe to be Groves's assistant, but both ended up being used and betrayed by Barbossa, a pirate who never deserved be a privateer
I have to wonder if Groves was sent along to keep an eye on Barbossa, but it's also possible serving secondhand to a privateer (who you lost your last ship to despite outnumbering about a dozen to one) was a punishment for him losing Endeavor. Defeat tends to get assigned to the highest-ranked surviving officer, who would've been Groves by that point. A lesser man might've resigned by Groves was made of sterner stuff and stayed loyal to a King who didn't deserve his service. It's honestly a bit of a shame he died here, since I think he could've genuinely done well for himself as an actual pirate under Barbossa, especially with the other Royal Navy dropouts he attracted.
"We be privateers not pirates master Gibbs, and in the kings name we'll behave as such." Privateers were pirates paid to act like pirates and not attack the navy of the nation they were privateering for. They'd also be granted immunity toward this nation. Example, Edward Teach (Blackbeard) was an English privateer along side Benjamin Hornigold during the Queen Anne's War, when the war ended and their privateering days were over they went back to normal piracy, which of course was illegal, though most evidence suggests Blackbeard and Hornigold even after the war refused to attack English ships out of loyalty.
Barbossa in the world of potc, is a well known pirate who used to be the famous undead captain of the black pearl, and also one of the pirate lords. He is one of the main pirates that can be held responsible for the fall of the east indian trading company by releasing a literal god. Yet, he became a privateer. With that background do you think he would have been allowed a proper job? I think it was a comment to stop Gibbs being cheeky.
That’s actually not true believe me I know more then you. Edward Teach was a privateer working for the English ok he was English Privateer. A privateer is by definition a Private man hired by the king to work so it’s not a soldier but a person who flys the colours of the person they work for. Among the great achievements of the Spanish Navy are the discovery of the American continent, (not a country) by the admiral in the service of Spain, Christopher Columbus. The first circumnavigation of the world by Juan Sebastián Elcano. The discovery of the maritime route between Asia and the American continent by Andrés de Urdaneta. The Spanish Armada was the most powerful in the world from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century and continued to be a naval force of world reference until well into the 19th century. Before the Royal Navy was the owner of the seas, its predecessor was the Spanish Navy, who dominated the seas and made Spain the first global empire in world history. PLUS ULTRA
Correction: The Vikings were the ones to discover North America about 500 years before Columbus was even born. They attempted to establish colonies in Newfoundland and integrated with the local tribes.

The hunt for the fountain is meant to be covert exhibition in a time of heightened tension between England and Spain. The last thing either side wants to know publicly is their ships to fire one another. That’s why the Spaniard didn’t even acknowledge Barbossa’s ship even though he has the advantage of numbers and firepower.
Well that and limitations. Privateers were sponsored by one government to attack another countries ships, often during a time of war. Essentially they were mercenaries, privatized commerce raiders. But with that in mind, if your a privateer under the English government, they might not look well upon you if you targeted British ships. Pirates has no such limitations. They would generally attack merchant ships regardless of what ensign they flew.
@@speed150mph True, but when the golden age of piracy began, some pirates out right refused to attack british ships anyways (at first), and several privateers were known for attacking any foreign ships they came across, even if the government they worked for wasn't at war with them. They weren't that profesional, for them this was an adventure, and the paper they signed was just their excuse to do this.

Jack = Pirate, Navy, Pirate
Britannia vs the Spaniard that's a great choice for an amazing battle for history.
Also Ottomans vs Spain or Venice
I'm doing a series called "The British Empire was NOT the biggest."
Got lots of material.
1:27 Groves : thinks about beckett and the endeavour
Barbossa be like : Bad memories ? :)
It could have been such a good Movie if this would have been a Naval Battle
Deathstar Entertainment the British ship was a sixth rate it would have been completely destroyed against 3 galleons
would be destroyed even v 1 of those xD
Maybe King George should have given him a Ship of the Line. That would have kicked the galleons ass.
then the King of Spain could have given the spanish the Santisima Trinidad xD
ruben g e Still not as strong as a fully armed Ship of the Line. At least I don't think it would be.
When I first saw this movie I thought there was gonna be an epic ship battle.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl correction: the vikings arrived first in America but they didn't discover anything because they never knew they were in another continent
Spanish nationalist are so cute, how is it going with Catalonia and the Basque sleepyhead :D?
@@crocodileguy4319what about you Anglophiles? How is it going with Scotland and Ireland
@@crocodileguy4319de verdad es que los ingleses soys cínicos y arrogantes, no reconocéis que España os reventó en Cartagena de Indias!
Gibbs has super vision of some sort. How could he see that the spaniard didn't turn his head? Captain, throw overboard that incompetent lookout and put Gibbs in his place.
How could Gibbs see that the Spaniard didn't even turn his head with his naked eye, while Barbossa had to use a spyglass?
maybe he wanted to check if there is any mistake
Old age x)?
THAT UK FLAG DIDN'T EXIST YET, TRIGGERED
Those Colonies Are Mine I thought I was who noticed that
You are most correct. That flag didn't exist until the 1900s or 1920s I think.
It was put into use in 1801 when the United Kingdom was made from Great Britain and Ireland.
Those Colonies Are Mine Oh wow I didn't realize it went that far back. I need to go back and brush up on my UK history. Thanks
No problem, glad I could be of some help
Groves was about to have endeavour flashbakcs when he started saying "orders sir? "
Geoffrey Rush just kills it in every scene. 😎
1:27 Groves had PTSD when Barbossa froze and didnt give orders.
Groves having PTSD from being given no orders again
Barbossa was really about to take on the Spanish 3v1 lol
Barbosa: "be we on the proper course Gibbs" Gibbs:" I it be proper there's your proof" notice how he pointed the spañerd ships and no one else saw them coming this right here is telling me that Gibbs knew all along he probably didn't give a shit if the ship he was got under attack I mean because that would give him the opportunity to Escape right but the reason he did say something was becuse he was put on the spot by barbosa.
Master Gibbs has some PHENOMENAL eyesight to see the Spanish Captain looking forward
The Spaniards are easily the best part of this film
“TU REGERE IMPERIO FLUCTUS HISPANE MEMENTO”
Man Barbossa had some giant balls wanting to take on 3 Spanish galleons
He did not want to do that, he just prepared the crew and the ship for a possible battle.
0:26 sounds like Barbosa almost laughed saying that
Damn after the death of Gillete and Groves ini this movie, the British Royal Navy is not going around in the 5
The hunt for the fountain is meant to be covert exhibition in a time of heightened tension between England and Spain.
The last thing either side wants to know publicly is their ships to fire one another. That’s why the Spaniard didn’t even acknowledge Barbossa’s ship even though he has the advantage of numbers and firepower.
If Barbossa had not chosen to be a pirate, he would have done well in the English navy, whether as a captain or privateer!
0:51 Hector Barbossa: ALL HANDS BATTLE STATIONS
1:07 The first gunner is Will Turner's son ?
Hahahahhaa
1:22 That pissed me off....
when you realize that irl the only difference between pirate and privateer was one little sheet of paper...
I love how barbossa acknowledges the fact that the spanish would have sank them😂😂
*Admiral Nelson and Vernon has left the chat*
jajajajajajajajajajaja
If this happen today, all spanish are scrolling their phone
1:21 gimmi that telescope
Quite a good scene.
Esta película de piratas del Caribe es genial
When my friends and I are playing sea of thieves every once in a full moon, we all wear red coats even though the Royal Navy is blue so is the American navy
The red would be later 18th century Britain. America also used blue.
He's literally doing the Chad yes meme
1:48 everytime in Sea of Thieves
I literally shout this to my galleon crew each time
@@bingusgames 0:51 is me when I see a ship on sea of thieves
@@jaymurray2216 so true
1:26 Even if they were going to fight, it's 3 ships to 1.....no-way they could've won anyhow, not without significant losses. It appears the Spanish have a much more sensible captain.....plus, why get ready for battle station when no warning of an attack has been made....
Not only it’s 3 ships to 1, it’s 3 Galleons against a 6th rate ship, it’s like trying to fight 3 school busses whilst being in a Mini Cooper
Because this was a time period where the British and Spanish were at a constant conflict. Seeing an opposing force is a solid reason to prepare for battle, at least to defend yourself if need be. But of course that Spaniards here had their eyes on the fountain of youth, not this single 6th rate British vessel
Lions don't concern themselves with the barking of dogs, or in this case, their very presence.
Groves always has a rush to get orders😂 1:26
the ship used in this scene is the Rose, which was also used as the HMS Surprise in Master and Commander

He never so much as turned his head.
I like it when he asks worryingly for what his orders are. Because in the last movie Becket didnt give orders to him and their ship got destroyed.
ship name is hms providance
Gigachad Spaniards vs Virgin pirates
I could see Barbosa taking those three ships out.
no the spanish would of destroyed them really quick
he was just preparing for the ship to sink
Lol everybody knows the story the Spanish would fuck them up Barbosa did the smart and right thing to just back off simple ass that so if your welling to pick a fight with the Spanish then your in for a rumbling disaster
Go and watch Black Sails then you see even 1 Spanish war Galleon, could have wrecked that english light frigate/6th rate, in just a few mintues.
Imagine Barbossa staring a war against the Spanish...
What's good left in this movie from that of the originals, Geoffrey Rush provided all of it
chad spaniard.
How exactly did they not notice those ships before?
im pretty sure Barbossa let the look-out keelhaul a few minutes later.
Who's here before the Euro 2024 Final: Spain🇪🇦 VS England🏴?

How did Gibbs see the Spaniard Capt not even turn his head?
0:50 Captain Hector Barbossa
00:48 never in real life. Spaniards would have been seen afar.
yes its very strange that they didnt see them earlier.
No one expects the Spaniard Navy
