You gonna do The Quiet Man any time soon?
i just played this last week, god damn i didn't even realise it was a spinoff, i just got it from a bargin bin
hey...how come the gameplay in this videos looks almost exactly like the paths and glitches they had in the It's Just Bad for Left Alive?
@@ThatManOverThere Read the actual description you just made a comment on.
No problem! :D
Fun fact: In Japan, they tried to promote this game by having its theme song performed by a band called Man With a Mission who you might be familiar with those guys who performed the opening theme for Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.
Man with a Mission also had one of their songs used to advertise SFV in Japan so maybe they chose the band because they're popular

Don't forget the "helpful" audio warning "The enemy is approaching" that plays whenever an enemy NPC walks towards you... OR when you are walking towards him, even if he's standing still. So basically, all of the time.
Oh yeah, that one game with Metal Gear art. Saw that post about it last year, and nothing since till this day.
Square Enix in 2019: Thank god FFVII Remake drops soon because we need a distraction.
Players: Are you a Front Mission game?
Left Alive: Yes
Players: Are you also an MGS game?
Left Alive: Also yes
Players: So what are you as a whole?
Left Alive: *A mess*
Good one!

"Hey, look. Meow!"

Thing is, everything you talk about the game being about, sounds amazing on paper. Sneaking around, trying to survive against an evil force, conspiracies... the idea of how terrifying mechs would be from a human level is something I'd love to see explored more competently. Surviving against terrifying odds sounds awesome.
I know it's not normal for its source material, but having not played Front Mission, THIS sounded more interesting than a strategy game to me. Done properly I probably would have heard of it and picked it up.
The issue with left alive is that it's a stealth action game with really bad stealth mechanics, a survival game with unfair survival mechanics (and forced fight sequences because eff you), a mecha combat game where the mecha are few and far between and have poor controls to boot, and a narrative heavy game where the plot is a confusing mess.
In short, it tries to do several things, and fails at all of them.
While it's disappointing to fans of the series to not get new strategy entries, I agree. What matters most is that it's a good game. Unfortunately it's a terrible game.
With how different it was going to be, it begs the questions why make it a part of the Front Mission franchise?
This could have easily been it's own thing, it's not like Front Mission has brand power like Final Fantasy does.
@@SeekerLancer Isn't the story of Front Mission done though? I mean, Scars of the War was meant to end the metaplot of the series in it's entirety. I really don't get why people still expect more Front Mission games. Evolved tried a soft reboot, but wow did that game suck.
@@src175 they could do a spinoff (not like this though....), just like MGSV gone prequel route, in hundred years of wanzer wars they could pick a conflict, made some conspiracy, conflict, and drama. bam, a front mission game, you right that FM5 meant as an end to the franchise's story though, i read somewhere that the original creators are done with FM, we probably will never see another Front Mission game again, hopefully im wrong, though.
2022 update: Remakes of Front Mission 1 and 2 are coming to the Switch
My first thought on seeing the title was: this is the ‘caution, the enemy is approaching’ game right?
This is the one.
I tried to make a funny comment referring to that but I don't think enough people remember the game for that to work...
CAUTION, ENEMIES ARE APPROACHING
Yeah, that was my first memory too. In a brilliant bit of game design, that warning would also play if the enemy was standing perfectly still but you were walking towards him.
Even Navi and Fi would tell that lady to shut the fuck up.
I legit forgot this game existed and looked at the thumbnail for sec thinking "Wait, what game is thi- oh right the one with art from the Metal Gear guy!" I doubt that's exclusive to me.
Legit is what everyone thought it would be, then saw the gameplay and was sad.
Also hi :P
Yeah, you're right on the mark. I honestly didn't even really know that this game even came out and only recognize Shinkawa Yoji's artwork on it.
Moral of the story:
Stick to why the game is liked so much!
How many times has this happened already in this show? Five
Makes me wonder if there'll be a Dawn of War III What Happened, because that was yet another instance of exactly this kind of thing. An attempt to make a franchise with a strong niche following into something more mainstream which a.) failed to attract any mainstream attention whatsoever and b.) lost the dedicated niche fans.
@@GaldirEonai Oof, yeah that one still stings. DoW3 came so close to being what everyone wanted, but tripped on the finishing line. Least that trailer was really cool tho
@@GaldirEonai The beta had a decent initial showing, with a couple million players in the first few days, but then the numbers dropped right off a cliff. Going from memory, I don't think the game surpassed a million units sold until months after release.
It goes to show how big a game-killer negative word-of-mouth can be.
@@GaldirEonai stole the thought right out of my brain. They had literally EVERYTHING they needed to make a good game! All the concepts and assets where there, the fans were very direct with what they wanted, but they end up pissing off fans of both previous entries and snuffed the franchise out for good.
At least we have... Ultimate.. Apocalypse.. still a mod though
It's a shame cause the MGS aesthetic, the character designs and the story set in a Slavic-like war torn country were awesome and full of potential. Too bad that the gameplay sucked so bad.
Meh
They spent a milion on the MGS artist and 7 dollars on the gameplay
@@tonioriginal3215 😂that’s hilarious
It really does, though. I’m replying two years later. That in itself should show just how bitter & saddened I am at the fact that, as a huge Front Mission fan, this game hit the bait & switch on almost every possible level.
With the setting presented, the artwork created & the fan base waiting EAGERLY for another game in this universe - “Left Alive” had NO excuse to fail as hard as it did. Y’all had the formula for success & simply pissed on it & said “trust me, we’ve got this”
You didn’t have SHIT. You could have had segments in-game in which you controlled human characters. In fact, I’m sure people would have enjoyed that. Controlling your pilot for specific missions & in the Wanzer garage etc. golden.
I might be too naive to save this, but I still kinda hope Square Enix remake this game. But knowing current Square Enix nowadays, I doubt that will happen.
Say hello to my CHOCOLATE BLEND!

@@qazhr It was also that game ProJared placed 1st place in his Top 10 Worst Games of 2019. That's where I heard of it.
It's funny how much advance credit I gave this game based on the cover art alone.
When it came out and reviews trashed it, I was like "That can't be true... it's only misunderstood or something" and even now when I browse a store and come across the title, something in my head says "Maybe I should give it another look? Maybe they've patched it?".
I know, we shouldn't judge a book by it's cover and that must go for games too, but... maybe I should just print it out and leave it at that.
Man, I miss Front Mission
4:53 Jamming a shovel into a sleeping man's balls has to be one of the crueler melee takedowns I've seen in a while.
My poor sweet Front Mission.... see how they massacred my boy... it still make me sad that the probably killed one of my favorite franchises.
I'd love to see Wha Happun - Postal III, guest starring Civvie11.
It would be a crime not to feature Civvie in a Postal video. He's an NPC in the new one, for Christ's sake. And he sells crack.
In the game. He sells crack in the game.
When it comes to games developed by russian jankmasters, civvie is your man.
I also want this.
@@Grease-Goblin While I know Civvie isn't an actual crack dealer, he's just selling health pipes, being a drug dealer is presumably less painful than internal ball tasering.
The fact we couldn't get another proper Front Mission is why my faith in Square Enix gets lower and lower every year
Honestly apart from Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy 14, Team Asano's games & Yoko Taro's games. I barely have much trust anymore in Sqaure when it comes to their games
They try so hard to be different rather than going for what made their games great in the first place, and when they do make something that's more adequate they find some way to fuck it up
Even the western titles has gone down the shitter too, they place such unfair sales targets, awful business decisions & piss poor marketing, it's a wonder why they still hold onto most of them

@@moddrew546 IMHO Square Enix (along with Sony, though I'd argue they're hardly a japanese company anymore) never really got their mind out of the gutter that was the early-to-mid 2010s attitude among japanese devs that they need to cater as much as possible to the West. Comparable companies like Bamco, KT and Capcom meanwhile went back to... not that and have seen decent success as a result. And other, smaller japanese devs like Atlus, Marvelous and Falcom have seen growing appreciation for doing what they do and not bending over backwards to fit "modern tastes".
Breaking news: This game title merged with “Dead or Alive” for me, so for the past two years I’ve been thinking a game called “Left Dead or Alive” exists.

To allude to a quote I've heard in another What Happened story, knowing how to make sushi doesn't mean you know how to make a hamburger, and your customers come to you for your sushi in the first place.

“Some Nintendo Direct later”
So now we’re getting remakes of the first two games. Though they’re by Forever Entertainment. Still better than being left in the void thanks to this.
@@Narrator1 When I heard them say that, I had the feeling
The fact that they're still charging $60 for it as of this video's release is mind boggling.
Even The Quiet Man, for as miserable as that was, got a permanent price cut months later due to its awful sales.
I feel bad for Yoji Shinkawa, his beautiful art style being used for this terrible game. At least he got to flex his artistry in Death Stranding.
Two terrible games. As far as i recall he also put in something for death stranding shortly afterwards.
Bazzy I wouldn’t say Death Stranding is a bad game. I thought the story was pretty good. I platinumed the game for christ sake.
It’s not hip and cool to like Desth Stranding. You just have to march to the same beat of “walking simulator” “slow and bad” “makes no sense kojumbo is a fraud”
Sohtak I’ve played WAY worse games than death stranding. It at least had competent developers, artists, sound designers, and a key vision to tie it all together. And the end product, I believe to be, is respectable and commendable. I’d put it on my resume.
LAW death stranding is not literal garbage. It’s didn’t come out in a broken and buggy state or scam people with micro transactions like other games. It told a complete story with complete mechanics and gameplay. It did what it wanted to do successfully without any company interference. That alone makes it better than a lot of games I’ve played.
I didn't even know there was another Front Mission game after Evolved.
Excuse me while I go hug my copy of FM3 and cry.

@@thefez-cat it's absolutely deliberate. microsoft did it. sony did it. Only it's clear how better action-rpgs are for modern taste plus we already reached peak turned based, while action-rpg is a new baby
joiless what are you talking about? Square still makes plenty of turn based. Dragon Quest, Bravely Default and now Octopath too. FF7R went that route because Kingdom Hearts combat was popular and it turned out pretty good. We just haven’t seen the old isometric strategy formula in a long time.
@@thefez-cat Waiting for someone to make an X-COM-esque mecha game.

Left Alive: It shouldn't have been.
WOKKA WOKKA!
The worst part is, you could theoretically make a game where you play as a soldier in a mech universe work.
I play the fan game Mechwarrior: Living Legends and rather than standard infantry a player can fight as a battle armor. A BA can take down a 'mech by supporting another 'mech or on its own if its lightly armored enough or has taken enough damage. Despite that if a 'mech can get a bead on you it can annihilate you, particularly with SRMs and flamers. Though all weapons do work against them.
It seems like something that could have been done here, have the characters be support for allied Wanzers and do things like leg or cockpit enemy units and make the Wanzers dangerous, make the player do things like strategize and find the best way to help your allies and stay alive.
And if you keep the player being able to take control of a Wanzer, make it fun and memorable, even if it's rare. make it so it's damaged and you have to avoid combat as best you can and/or use cover. Or let the player use it to support for infantry and have them fight another Wanzer as a boss.
Thos game COULD have worked.
Heck, all you need to do is mention Titanfall 1 and especially 2, and bam. Foot soldiers with great mech action.
It's even worse this is years AFTER TF2.
@@hypethekomodo6495 LOL I have played them and can't believe I forgot to mention the,. Guess I've been playing Living Legends too much.
Those also help prove my point though.
Front Missions specifically has such an absurd amount of lore and world building that could be used to make a game that isn't just a TRPG with mechs. So it makes this game extra depressing, because the setting has so much room for different types of games.
@@Calvin_Coolage The Battletech universe which MechWarrior is based off of is a GREAT example of this.
The original tabletop is more of a turn based strategy with you moving your 'mech/tank/vehicle/whatever and then a combat phase. Think X-com if you've played that.
While there are games that do that kind of gameplay (The Crescent Hawks games and Harebrained Schemes Battletech) it has alos done piloting simulation (MechWarrior) and RTS type games (MechCommander).
In fact, I think Mech combat simulation could work for Front Mission as well. You would just have to do it right.
They Technically did though with Front Mission: Gun hazard for the SNES. Where you bought and customized Wanzers and occasionally had to get of your mech mostly to open doors or push buttons.
I just saw the Rerez video on this just before going to bed, and I thought you should cover it, and here I am now......
I remember getting so hyped when the teaser was revealed, showing wanzers getting transported into a war zone by helicopters... I really don't get the whole "appeal to the western audience" spins on these videogames, only ending up frustrating their fanbase. Great video again Mat!
Which is weird, because I think the general audience has come to accept more of that distinct Japanese flavor after the seventh generation and all of the westernization (Capcom, Square Enix, and other Japanese developers that tried to adapt and couldn't).
Capcom at least got their groove back by embracing it with DMC5, the recent Resident Evil games from RE7 onwards, and the remasters of old titles like Okami and Onimusha. Square Enix have done well in bringing back FF's quality with XIV's relaunch and 7 Remake...but both still have the occasional mistake such as this.
As a good friend once said to me: "That'll show you to have hopes and dreams."
I like the "philosophical" idea behind Left Alive, but I feel the game would have been better had the developers taken more design notes from something like Valkyrie Chronicles, rather than Metal Gear.
it's kinda sad honestly. the concept of a group of people trying to survive in not just a war-zone, but one where giant mechs are driving around, could have made for a really interesting story. imagine having to coordinate with all 3 of your characters to take down one of the enemy mechs by finding a way to collapse a building onto it. heck that would've been a great way to bring in some of the strategy gameplay of the originals!
I know! Seeing glimpses of gameplay makes this game look seriously promising! I just hate that the final product was a dumpster fire. This should have been its own IP and given more support to Bette flesh out its many systems.
Western hate this peasty strategy stuff.
„Angry German Noises“

I am never not going to be salty about that 😤
I think it was a reference to Square refusing kicking and screaming to publish their games internationally until their publishers force them.
Dead Sun wouldn't have been a good Legacy of Kain game. Granted, Nosgoth wasn't either, but even then, these two acts weren't the worst thing SE has done to the LoK community and Eidos community in general - that would be the great SE Forum Zero-Warning Apocalypse of 2019 that took lives of both forums proper and old Eidos forum archives.
I dunno, I maintain I'd have rather the game be allowed to exist, then we could all assess its merits. I've been revisiting Castlevania: Lords of Shadow recently and... 🙄
I mean, it's not bad; just 🙄
And we can actually play that one to find that out.
Plus, weren't Climax making Dead Sun? I know Shattered Memories is gaming Marmite, but I was certainly a believer... 👍
Man I have been waiting for this one. Thank you Matt!
In my opinion one of the biggest problems of Left Alive is that people went in thinking "I am rambo" while in reality the game truly wants you to understand that you are Chris Burnett, not John Rambo.
Great review!
In Japan, this game sold so poorly that new copies dropped from $60 to $10 for used within a month, and in 3 months, used copies were around $3 to $5 with new ones around $10. The cheapest I’ve found was $1 for a used copy. $1!!!!
I have to admit, while this video was playing, I opened a new tab and was googling that Al Pacino Dunkin Donuts commercial
Look up DailyDunkacchino on Twitter
The game has one more big problem, there is no jumping mechanic for your characters, you simply can't jump, everything becomes an obstacle and only a few things can be climbed over.
You nailed it... I thought it was "I Am Alive" which kind of had potential and it would be cool to see an entry on this.

"Left Alive - What Happened?" is also the story of my latest breakup.
7:33 absolutely genius. breath-taking and ground-breaking creativity is being displayed.
Oh man, FM 3. The memories. 2 campaigns and 60 hours each run. I was obsessed with the game.
This game breaks my heart, I pre-ordered the collector's edition and everything. The game had potential but they really screwed it up.
Another small fact you might enjoy, the collector's edition was announced to be "Numbered" and "Limited" but they went back on that just before launch (after pre-orders had already been charged) and didn't bother telling anyone that the limited numbered collector's edition was no longer well, any of that. Just a mass-produced collector's edition, probably because they realized the game would tank and they needed every bit of money they could get.
I am also 1 of those Front Mission Fans. When I found out this game was set in the FM universe and saw it was getting shit on I knew I wouldn't get a new game for, well probably never now. I watched 1 reviewer talk about with his review in march 2019 and tried to defend the combat of trying to make you feel hopeless and getting a wanzer was a very special reward. But this is FM, being in a mech IS THE GAME. Its like pooring salt in the woods from having FM evolved to this, to a garbage bin on fire.

My reactions were the exact same as the introduction. The only thing I knew about this game was the cover art and I thought it was a fan made cover/concept for a new metal gear solid. You know. After Metal Gear Survive there'd be Metal Gear Left Alive. Kinda similar themes you know?

A game where you play as a heavy armor driver who gets stuck without a mech and has to scrounge for his own equipment, supplies, and ammunition... That's... That's a little too real, actually.
