    Anyone wanting to teach in Cambodia should go and help out at a school,
    try it out and see what fits you. I have helped for the last 3 years in a
    Polytechnical School and now they want me there full time and I
    continue helping at another school. I bring textbooks and supplies to
    both schools and they appreciate this so much and it opens the doors for
    you if this is the school you want to work at even if it is not you have
    helped the students out alot and I mean alot.

    Hi Dave, new to the channel. Thanks a million for the great vids. Being a noob I don’t quite follow when you say you teach for free. Could you please explain a little?

      Hello. When people can't afford to pay for English lessons or send their children to school to learn it, I offer free classes for them. I rely on donations to cover the cost of what would normally be their tuition. When we can, we teach in person at their apartment buildings, Wats, homes, etc. I also teach in my apartment if it's easier for them that way.
      Of course, right now that's not possible because of the virus. But I do my daily classes online until this is over. It's a bit more difficult because some of them don't have smartphones or the internet so they have to share with a friend who does. My internet here isn't really set up for online classes, but we make it work! Plus, I just started a UA-cam channel to go over the lessons we normally study in class so they can access that when they want.

    Having been an expat in Vietnam for 12 years, I have taught at several schools. You mentioned the 5% that don't want to learn...interesting because my experience is that oftentimes, those 5% represent a student who was born with "a silver spoon in his/her mouth"...in other words...they know that mom and dad are rich, they are "set for life" and so they figure...I don't need to try. At least that is my personal take on the situation and yes, I understand your frustration.

    Great video, Dave, Just curious, when you first got here, and applied at the schools, did you apply clean shaven with business haircut or with the beard and long hair?

    • @DaveDoesCambodia
      @DaveDoesCambodia  4 роки тому

      Hey Mark! I had a neatly trimmed beard and a "business" haircut. Some schools may require you to be clean-shaven, others not. But you'll still have to maintain some semblance of "neatness". I haven't had my long hair or chest-length beard in a long time lol!

      @@DaveDoesCambodia I figured that but just curious why they didnt just snap you up. It was suggested to me to try teaching in thailand but just not my thing.

      @@markbigelow2608 Thailand requires a bachelor's degree along with the TEFL so I chose Cambodia instead.
      I've known people who get hired right away and others that take a while longer. A lot of it is based on the needs of the schools at the time. People often stay here until their contract is up and then travel on. Sometimes you have to wait, I guess 👍

    How many hours/week do you work for the $1000/month? - you said 5-6 hours/day.
    - Good video

    • @DaveDoesCambodia
      @DaveDoesCambodia  4 роки тому

      Hello. Yes, 25 teaching hours per week is the average. Of course, you also have lesson planning, grading, and other administrative type things that doesn't count for your working hours. You generally only get paid for the hours you teach.

    seems like if you go into teaching in cambo then you should probably not approach it as much as a teacher and approach your class more as a business and to pass kids in order for the international school to look good and make money and they will love you for it

    • @DaveDoesCambodia
      @DaveDoesCambodia  4 роки тому +3

      Actually, someone should approach it like a teaching job even if for the fact that a lot of schools will be money first.
      No matter what the schools do, your job remains the same. At the end of the day if you know you've done your job to the best of your ability, that's okay!
