    Hopefully this is useful to your viewers. I did 12 years in SR including managing the overseas staff at Pannesastra for a couple of terms. Qualifications / experience: a degree plus classroom experience is useful for the higher-end schools and the universities. TEFL and CELTA are also looked on favourably. There's a bit of a fixation on having native speakers, but that doesn't preclude non-native speakers entirely. Tool kit: make sure you've got a good dictionary and a decent grammar reference book. Some sort of phonetics textbook may also be useful. The local bookshops have knock-offs of these so don't feel you have to bring them with you. Salary: I made 1K once in 12 years. Salaries are usually based on an hourly rate, so you need a minimum of 2-3 classes per day to live comfortably. Pay-rises are rarer than hens' teeth - I had one in 12 years. Also take into account public holidays and term breaks where you will have no income at all. [I'd factor 1.5 total months with no income per year]. There is no sick pay either [malaria 4 times, missed one class in 10 years and still dining out on that record!]. Advantages?: Cambodia is extraordinary and teaching English to Khmers of any age is the best job in the world. [Sorry Dave - Yim says I talk too much. I'll get my coat]. PS Love your posts and always drop a like.

      If you’re lucky, things have changed, in some places anyway. I’m a full-time ESL teacher, salaried with a generous paid holiday entitlement, some sick pay and I receive two different types of health insurance. We had annual pay-rises until Covid wrecked the economy. Unfortunately times have changed, many businesses have closed down in SR so I’d advise bringing any reference books you feel you need etc with you. A lot of schools have also closed down so we wait to see if they reopen now Covid restrictions are being lifted. However, fingers crossed, we have just started a new academic year and enrollment is much higher than anticipated so things are, hopefully, looking up.

    As an ex English teacher who worked recently in Cambodia I would say go with a few bucks in your pocket. Don't depend on your earnings as a teacher if you want to have a reasonable lifestyle.

    PS I don't know what's open these days but ACE used to pay well. Build Bright University and Pannesastra University could be added to your list if they're still going.

      Non native can teach English?
      How hard to get job for non native speakers?

    • @DaveDoesCambodia
      @DaveDoesCambodia  2 роки тому +6

      @@Anbu96888 It's more difficult for non-native English speakers but it also depends on several factors such as the salary, the hours, or the school's budget.
      Some native speakers may not want a lower paying job with a lot of teaching hours so these schools will hire non native speakers since they don't command a higher salary.
      It's also a matter of supply and demand. If they are in desperate need for teachers and not enough native speakers apply, they will hire non native speakers as long as they can show sufficient English teaching skills.

      Not great, is the short answer. A lot of the schools and universities are fixated on native speakers. It's very short-sighted as they miss out on a lot of talented teachers. I'm not saying it's impossible and the current situation where they are struggling for teachers may be in your favour.

    How is everyone dealing with the high U.S.A. income taxes that us citizens still have to pay overseas? Federal (37%) + North Dakota State (5%) + Social Security and Medicare(15.3%)= 57.3%. I graduate next December. Are they using some type of foreign income tax exclusion loophole?

      Yes but the requirements are more strict I think. I think Vietnam requires a full Federal government criminal background check which takes 3 months to complete in the United States for example. Does Cambodia require that as well? What about blood tests? I am really squeamish about needles

    • @EndlessTravels

      @@DaveDoesCambodia For retirees its not ideal at all as you legally cannot and Vietnam does and has never offered such options unless your willing to marry a citizen but still at max 5 year TRC(Resident card). As of now in 2022, only Cambodia and Thailand offer a type of retirement Program for people. Honestly don't see Vietnam ever going that way, even now they have removed the American 3 and 12 month Visas and have said nothing of their returns.
      To hear the hourly in Cambodia though is insane, 5 to 6 hundred is a start with no degree at 25 hours...
      Better to just stay home for that person where ever that is and work at Burger King lol
