Watching Mads not drilling an oversized hole and filling it with thickened epoxy is like making a cup of tea with a microwave. You know it saves time and you understand it, but it just feels wrong.
Whenever I see someone complaining about why the PO never did this correctly. Here above is the reason, time, most people don't have or don't want to spare the time for a job that in all likelihood, won't cause an issue until the boats sold.

I was a bit shocked to be honest, about the announcement. To me the crossing is the first real trip with the boat completely finished. So Eva not participating is surprising.
You’ve been watching, right? There have been some pretty significant ‘trips’ already. Not everyone who loves sailing wants to cross oceans. It’s a strong call from the team, and allowed others along.
I think he wants to/needs an experienced sailor on board. Not unreasonable
I am very disappointed myself!!! So disappointed, I don't think I will watch those episodes. I cannot for the life of me understand why Ava's brother in law, would not want to be with his wife and new child. There is a lot of engineering which takes place around Athena and I love it all, but I cannot help but think this is just another bit of engineering!! I am happy to see you smiling so broadly Mads!

@@monatheformerferalcat Yes, I agree!! This was a big deal for us and Ava. I get the feeling there was a vote and Ava lost out!! Ava shows a lot of exuberance, and I don't think that is Mads way unfortunately!!! Ava has been shown less on on camera as we have been moving through episodes.

The Horror... 😱 Athena is a near Idillic Creation thanks to the quality of your work, and your designs and execution have been nothing less than inspiring. So if I may be so bold to say that for the first time I was disappointed, please restore our faith in all that is good and true and DRILL FILL DRILL the cleats !
Having raced on the sea with a spinnaker bag. Put a line and or a clip on either end of the bag. When moving on the deck in a sea it is good to have a quick snap shackle to attach the bag to the wire until you get those clips attached.
Check out rivetnuts as an alternative to tapping thin aluminum.

Well... I will keep watching. But I was really looking forward to Mads and Ava together. Thanks for this DIY. You did some different things than other DIYs that I've watched. I've seen so many now that I am picky about what I will watch. Broken bulkheads, engine maintenance, winch repairs, outboard repairs, sail patching... I want to see some SAILING now!

I was going to write that I wouldn't recommended that particular angle for your cleets near your winches... but as I'm writing this you've drilled the holes already :D :D (Sheets needs to go to opposite end of cleet first then you go anticlockwise for portside)
Could there be a problem with chafing of lines and wires, inside the mast, with the end of the screws? Maybe, that is why they used rivets in the original installation.

Hey 👋. I have a hot k ice like you are using. Someone gave me a tip that they use and I now do as well a light dimmer cord. You can set it to allow the hot knife to get to the perfect temp to cut the material your cutting. It’s less smoke and you won’t have to trigger the switch on the knife. 🤷♂️
Mads, As you prepare to leave I was curious as to how long I have been following you. So I rewound the videoes to that very first one that I discovered you. It was the one where you first met Alfie back in March of 2015. Its been a great trip and I do hope that you are able to meet up with Alphie again. Thanks for the great journey. I have used wide fibreglass sail battens to keep a turtle bag in shape, it makes it easier get the to fit snugly and prevent pesky waves getting in.

Hey Mats, great stuff. When I watched you installing the clutches on the mast a thought crossed my mind: maybe you should reconsider installing the second clutch with the handle pointing upwards. The probability of entangling a line or open it by accident is pretty high, especially when things get nasty. Additionally I‘m unsure, if this type of clutch has a predetermined direction of how the line is clamped.

What a class act on the Sailrite! You missed your calling Mads. There is currently a 9 month waiting list to get canvas work done in Queensland. Or 3 months if you don't care about standards. The reason we don't have rope clutches on our spinnaker pole control lines on the mast is that you can't reposition the pole with one hand. Remember the other hand is to stop you going over the side. For that reason we have cam cleats with retaining bars. Also a clutch can load up badly and can be difficult to open with even two hands. However, I'm sure you'll be fine.
Did you realize at 3:55-ish you referred to the sail wright as sail life…

some netting fitted to forward guard rails does help in stopping control ropes and deck drops of sails from going in the drink, also loose whisker polls boat hooks and fenders. with new crew , new to boat i found it a god send. not only too my pocket but at sea for weeks you cant go to the boating toy shop for replacements . crew also seem to heave winch handles overboard . when i used to race i left the price stickers on the handles seem to reduce loses. easy release clips on top of new sail bag for mid or top safety rail fit also helps new crew put bag the write way round when bag moved to leeward for tidy host.

The advantage of running the spinnaker tackline back to the cockpit is that blowing the tack is probably the fastest way to slow the boat if someone goes overboard.
With headsail and mainsail, my immediate action is to heave to. With spinnaker (and main), my immediate action is to point dead downwind and blow the tack.
Trying to head up with a spinnaker risks a broach, and if the spinnaker is flying like a flag behind the mainsail you can pull it in with the sheet while dropping the halyard.
We've had winch drums refinished, to renew the texture and add friction back again. The hardest part of refinishing is just pulling everything apart so you only hand over the body to the machine shop.
I was windering if that was possible. it seemed to me just rough sand-blasting them might be enough to get the grip back.
Ahhhh, you'll be missed Ava, and the boat is looking so good! Haven't seen a tack belt before, looks great though - watch for chafe, but it is a light airs sail. Our first asymmetric was on a furler wire, but we have an as yet untried soft mouthed sock... I never get tired of deploying this sail - shear size and all that. The control line should run to the rear of the boat - depending on size. 3 men in a boat - here's a song there somewhere!
Those rubbery doohickeys on the winch can be replaced. I just did mine. They are called "Barton Winchers". I have similar vintage Lewmar 46 main winches and needed the extra large size. They were a complete pig to install but once on they look great and no more slipping sheets!

I assume you're going to test those rigging modifications before the crossing.

Hi Mads, About your problem with the old Lewmar self-tailing winches. If you want to reduce the minimum rope diameter self-tailing head can handle you might want to consider something I did a few year ago. You remove the upper parts of the winch (head, stripper-arm and divider/plastic plate in between)
The plastic plate needs to be reduced in thickness (with a router and a workbench) and the same with the underside of the winch head. The bolts in the top will be to long so new, shorter bolts are needed.
The bolts are sometimes hard to get in the length needed or need to be cut. On a pair of 48ST from the same series as on Athena I was able to reduce the grip from 14-16mm to 10-12mm. So much better with thin dyneema sheets. AND, you need a (plastic-nylon) ring / washer to overcome the gap between stripper arm and head
this reminds me of me, i found 2 perfect condition headsails in my attic from when i first bought my boat, a high aspect and a low aspect 100%, this was at the same time that i got quotes for those exact sails haha
10:00 min in or so.. go with the dynema a anywhere you can it’s strong quiet and you can make extra and sell dynema shackles all over the place or use them for trade.. a good thing to fiddle with on watch or down times

Mads, did you forget the Duralac paste for the screws on the clutches? Don’t underestimate the power of waves to wash the asymmetric overboard. Personally I would use the pole on the asymmetric to bring the clew more to windward. Asymmetrics are not usually poled out but it works very well. Personally, I would not want anything inducing side loads on my forestay and foil. Sad to hear Ava is not doing the crossing. I can’t help but get the vibe that long term sailing and live aboard is not for the long term. I hope I’m wrong. Imagine the state of the interior of the boat after a crossing by three guys, Ava will need to do a wry deep clean…. Andy UK

Hi Mads & Ava, great video! I love your diy-videos. One question: As a (low) budget-sailor, i'm somewhat hesitant to invest that much money in a really great sowing-machine (such as you sailrite) because they are also somewhat expensive. In one of your older videos (yes, the ones with Obelix), i've seen that you had another sowing-machine and as i discovered that one is about 1/5 of the price new here in Germany. What would you do? Was that old sowing-machine any good (besides beeing a bit complicated to use)?
I had the same issue with my last boat, had a lot of heavy duty Sewing of Cockpit Sunscreens and stuff for hanging Mosquito netting securely etc, liked the Sailrite, but more expensive than I could justify . In the USA at the time a very good Singer electric sewing machine, with excellent Customer reviews was a real Bargain price on Amazon. Man that thing was powerful . . . and too fast withmit for me and the friend I was staying with to handle. Stroke of Luck, Friend's Daughter turned out to beva skilled Seamstress with years of experience, a d she blasted through all the work in no time. Neither Friend or his daughter had a sewing Machine at the time, so I loaded them up with spare needles and spools of thread, as friend was restoring a Classic American Car at the time, needing some things made, plus his daughter had a load of things to use a Sewing machine on, with the House her and Son in Law of friend had just bought. So that Sewing Machine was a perfect thank you gift for all they had done for me ( along with a few other goodies as well). So if you can handle something that powerful and fast, frankly there are better machines than Sailrite available at much lower Cost . Maybe go to a shop that sells Sewing Machines to get demonstrations to determine whether you can handle them, before parting with any money for one , and check what types of stitching they can do, as well as the Materials they can cope with (that Singer could Stitch Leather with a leather Needle, hence was OK for Leather Upholstery work on the Classic Car for example, which was fine for heavy Sailcloth as well, of course). if you find one that seems to tick all the right boxes, lessons in using it right w9uld probably be a good idea too ? I believe that ALL cleats should be wound CLOCKWISE ALWAYS to start!! Proper figure 8s after that of course. That way every time, in darkness, rain, no visibility, whatever, you KNOW how it feels, even without looking. This was one of my inviolate rules on my sailboats!
I thought the line always goes around the far end of the cleat, so winds either way, depending.
Very interesting, I also plan to buy or make a tack belt to install a gennaker now some people are skeptic & think this set up could possibly cause excessive lateral force on the forestay. This is part of the reason why I ordered my gennaker 10-15% smaller than the normal advised area for my boat. Now, as you mention, it's for "light winds" sailing. So I think it should be fine.
Ava, do you think you could do a video for your time in Hungary? I promise I won't tell Mads about the wild parties and cruising the beaches!
Any chance of putting a plastic bushing in the top of the emergency rudder housing? If the bottom housing is radially tight on the rudder shaft then a new top bushing will help. A thick sacrificial plastic cutting board may provide radial retention. I can’t see much from the photo to offer help on axial retention. Don’t forget that you can use a combination of hole saws and your electric drill to make bushings that will get you by. Obviously the temporary 19:03 19:03 repairs will be subject to a two day sea trial. Gentle sail handling may reduce side loads on the rudder shaft. I look forward to seeing the new rudder design and how you 19:03 are going to add robust redundancy. I’m betting on adding a bow thruster.

Yeah, maybe consider using low friction rings instead of those heavy blocks. Avoid several problems associated with lead angles to blocks.
Pass a bungee rope through the pipe so that it's both flexible, but otherwise allow it to go parallelogram if you move it about. To protect the ends, using one of those standing flames, heat the ends of the pipe and using a flat nosed pair of pliers, bend the pipe little by little to the outside and fold it back to make a thick, smooth edge.
You should add a threaded rivet and then use screws inside that.
I wonder if an appropriately sized file and some ingenuity could be used to sharpen the teeth in the old winch jam heads?

You can take the winch jaws to a metal shop and have them 'sand' blasted. A coarse media will leave a textured surface that should grip the lines like new... 🤯

Not sure if this will work on a sailboat, but I once saw a master craftsmen use D4 wood glue applied to open cuts to seal them off a bit. In particular, they used this when fitting a cooktop into a wooden countertop. The cooktop then was sealed off with silicone of course, the wood glue was more of a little insurance "just in case". Maybe this will work ok for the wooden core as well, if there is no time to drill - fill - drill? This will of course be inferior to DFD, but I can imagine it's better than to just leave the wood exposed...
Mads... Did you know you can make your tack-belt out of old fenders... The 'sleeve' is already round, and so all it needs is the webbing and a D-ring. (there's a YT video about it)
I am thinking about making a tack belt as well but one of my friends with much more experience says it will put to much stress on my furling system

14:28 you can 3D print new ones out of a suitable material that's impregnated with UV substances these days. It should be very easy to figure out how the OG one had the worn teeth from other ones. I've had 3D printed chain guides made from carbon fiber PLA and ABS for nearly 4 years now on my chain crane that's used and abused on a regular basis and other than scratches and normal wear for such materials they're showing no other signs of distress. You can make them and order them from various sites online with little hassle. You can even have them made out of aluminium if you feel it's a better material.
Would having the "tack belt" choked onto the foresail instead of slung better prevent chafing? If so, maybe cut out one of the circular rings, install a carabineer or dynmea loop and pass through the circular ring? I'd be lazy and buy a short lifting sling for either method.. not nearly as pretty though
13:49 One suggestion is to have them abrasive blasted, and re-passivated that can return the grip to the winch.

Have you considered “soft shackles” instead of using those heavy stainless shackles. Dyneema soft shackles can be used everywhere!

Oh...I really wanted to see Ava take care of Mads on the trip across the Atlantic and be the voice of reason..3 men and a boat...sounds like a bad movie title.....20 meals does not seem like a lot for 3 men, so I'm guessing lots of cereal and junk food..lol.....But having extra people on a crossing is much nicer even if they do not have much experience, just being able to catch a few hours of continuous sleep is a God send. Hey Mads, could you explain for non sailing types how the spinnaker works, why it's in a sock/bag and how you haul it up. I've got a 26 Sadler and have been sailing for 2 yrs but no idea what to do with the spinnaker I found under the V berth.

I have lewmar winches like yours .wavegrip winches.
There is a guy that converts our old winches to a later lewmar self tailing winch. It cost me £100 per winch .
That’s interesting. Can you provide contact info to the company that converted your winches?
Stainless fasteners screwed into aluminum threads become permanent due to corrosion. Unless you put something on the threads to prevent corrosion. This is first hand knowledge.
