This morning in my hometown I saw a young lad riding a chromoly Mongoose bmx with yellow tuff wheels! Was definitely and older bmx but looked frikkin awesome. Good to see the younger generation getting into it.
Yellow Skyway Mags were great on a ROSS bmx bike I had in 1981 and the heavy duty inner tubes lasted longer and took the bumps real well. (GOOD WORK SKYWAY MAG COMPANY)
I had some black Tuff Wheels back in the day on my Moosegoose.I loved that bike, and so did someone else, because a lowlife stole the best bike I ever owned. #tuffwheels
I had the opposite happen. I got a generic bmx bike for x-mas 1980 from, I think, Montgomery Ward. Or a similar dept. store. It was stolen while parked in front of my house in 8th or 9th grade. My dad was pissed at me for leaving it out unlocked. But that opened the door to my finally getting a Mongoose, with Tuffs from a kid in the neighborhood, for only 50 bucks. And my dad was pissed he had to shell out even that much! That goose had seen better days, the kid that had owned it was a big fat fucker. But I finally had a Mongoose, with tuff wheels.
Almost the same story here. '83 Schwinn Predator, Black Tuff Wheel II's, Laid-Back Blue Haro Seat, Black and White ODI Mushroom Grips, Blue Dice Caps on the Inner Tubes -- STOLEN
A friend of mine, in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, was one of the first kids in our neighborhood to get a Chromoly Mongoose with blue Tuff wheels, had to be late ‘81-‘82, it really was a major breakthrough with bicycle technology. It was $350 (~$1200 now) at the time, which was, as Jeff Spicoli put it, “righteous bucks”, especially for a bike for a 13 year old kid. Certainly kicked the crap out of the “pot metal”, “boat anchor” weight Ross Apollo bike I got a few years earlier for $78.00
in 86 or 87 I had enough money for a the GT Pro World Tour in chrome....it was 10.490ats (austrian Schillings). around 8.000 came from me. Then my mother brought me a yellow pro performer with blue tuffs. I was angry for years. Today I would apprecaite this bike, but still not more than the chromed Pro World Tour....the World Tours were just so beautiful.
I owned an set in mid 80´s, white ones, they had an Andy Patterson signature printed on and i was sooo damnd prowd to own them uphere in germany !!! Now i own a brandnew pair of yellow first series TW, both frontwheels, but in the old shop where i bought them they gave me a rear axle rebuild kit,so i can change one into a rearwheel :-)
I think they still make the skyway tuff wheels but now they have 14mm axle and 9t cassette gearing, I plan on building an oldschool bmx from the late 80s or early 90s with all modern components

I loved the original black tuffs with the gold anodized hubs, they were cool looking. Didn't like to ride tuffs tho because they were too heavy. I did/do like the pedals tho. I still have an old Skyway i just tuned up for my 10 year old. He has one of the new skate park type bikes that are way nicer, better quality, better geometry and better materials etc… but for some reason he likes the old skyway. in his defense It is cool
They were very expensive. Very strong plastic. They had a rigid stiff feel up and down. In turns they flex a little to soften rough spots. They looked so cool
The graphite Tuff Wheels where it. The Z rims sucked, they would bend and flex back but your spokes were metal and did not have that capability, I know cuz I had them.
Such great time 80es 90es loved it old school bmxs and skating , still love both of it but there just some thing gone from skating more all this x games I know things change but it's not for me , I just don't no what I'm trying to say
I had these, really good but a bit "elastic". They had the advantage of being straightened if you jumped on them in the correct angle. Later i got some UKAI 48 HP (double High Pressure rims) which were better.
The popular helmet of the day was the Bell Moto III - you might be interested to know that Bell reintroduced the Moto III last year - i.e., 2016. They still look solid!
This is great for my current mid-life crisis!!! Thanks you
this is great,... thanx for sharing.
I always wanted a Skyway frame, so cool!! Good memories.

Skyways stuff back then was great. Miss those times
*I had a set of Skyway II Mags. They were great. XD I miss my old BMX.
My last bike in the late 1970's was a blue Mongoose with yellow Tuff wheels. Man I loved that bike.

the metal 5-spoke-star you mean with inner tube?
Wish it was the 80’s again.
Them wheels and bikes were unbreakable

i feel yah brother! my fully built out GHP was ripped off locked in a bike rack . only thing I had was my cut lock on the ground.worst day ever.

I still have my Rampar with those rims! 🤘🏻
aaahhh yes I had sets of these on many different bikes. I loved my Hutch bikes

Metal rims back then bent like soda cans. Loved my Skyways.
T Square and Triangles baby. Legit old school drafting table
Love It!!
They had the dopest color scheme imo.
This just left me Teary Eyed!
my right earl loved this
@4:04 Safety glasses young lady!
For me it was always tuffs or z rims!
Z-Rims were my compromise for racing. Tuff wheels were too heavy.
This one kid at school brought one of these like 10 years ago and we all thought it would just snap and it was cheap but now I know
im assuming that these wheels are no longer in production since everything is outsourced?
I need a set if their American made
Nope, these wheels are still on sale and are still made in the U.S.
What's the difference between a nylon mag wheel with 6 spikes and one with 5?
Your answer lies in Egypt.

Wow Americans working, those were the days
i had a skyway from my cousin, and its really thrashed up and spraypainted. worth anything?
Restore it... or send it to me and I will
Had black tough 2s on my red Schwinn Scrambler.. nice bike but steel and not chrome dipped. Haro and Diamondback guys ate me up
my left ear loved this!
Can’t hit the zoom in button or else somehow you only hear it through your left ear
I think they still make the skyway tuff wheels but now they have 14mm axle and 9t cassette gearing, I plan on building an oldschool bmx from the late 80s or early 90s with all modern components
ahh so many cool bikes so little time skyway is my mans favourite lucky we got enough supply to last 20 odd years or so

And please take a laugh at the guy at 1.10... look at his pants! LMAO !
1:50 thats bull mongoose made the mag wheel not sky way
You are an idiot. The wheels were called Motomags. Very heavy. Later the TUFF WHEEL changed the game & set the standard for "mag" wheels for bicycles.
@Charbok001 planet bmx sells new ones. i got some last week.
I loved the original black tuffs with the gold anodized hubs, they were cool looking. Didn't like to ride tuffs tho because they were too heavy. I did/do like the pedals tho. the black with the gold metal insert were the graphite-tuffs.....oder model, twice as expensive
@@Hirthirthirt right. As I understand it they were race only. Very brittle for normal abuse.
i've yellow when i'm junior high school 1987 😅
Please answer my question.
Are this wheels are made of plastic or aluminium?
How much they costs?
Charbok001 like plastic and some filled with heavy fibers
They were very expensive. Very strong plastic. They had a rigid stiff feel up and down. In turns they flex a little to soften rough spots. They looked so cool
Zytel nylon
It started the countdown at 3 and ended at 3
so i see its injection molding, lots of people want 26" so which is more spendy a new tool for injection molding or hrs of cnc cut mags.
I have a 89 kent hyper action free style looking to sell it
Saint Lucifer good luck with that lol
nice video,,,but no industrial safety those days????
I had them wheels on my shwinn sx100
It can be!
...the girls too?
The graphite Tuff Wheels where it. The Z rims sucked, they would bend and flex back but your spokes were metal and did not have that capability, I know cuz I had them.
Yeh Z rims were soft as shit ,it was a gimmick that had no real benefit,Tuffs for strength Pro class drilled rims for racing....👍
Such great time 80es 90es loved it old school bmxs and skating , still love both of it but there just some thing gone from skating more all this x games I know things change but it's not for me , I just don't no what I'm trying to say
For the first minute I thought this was the opening scene to a vintage porn movie.
I had these, really good but a bit "elastic". They had the advantage of being straightened if you jumped on them in the correct angle. Later i got some UKAI 48 HP (double High Pressure rims) which were better.
AH, SWEET MONO!
The better years, when we actually manufactured our own goods. Now this stuff lasts, luckily, a year, then ready for the garbage.
Still had those cheap looking cranks, that were one cast piece.
I had stuff wheels on my webco.
those helmets...fuk yea
The popular helmet of the day was the Bell Moto III - you might be interested to know that Bell reintroduced the Moto III last year - i.e., 2016. They still look solid!
