  • With Brady and Lorenzo out cruising the Mexico desert with our Coues deer hunt winner, Trail invited Jared Pierce and "Tall" Paul Frame to the Big Hunt Guys podcast to discuss selecting the right boot for your hunting season. Jared is the boot buyer for the GOHUNT Gear Shop, and Paul manages the storefront where he fits folks daily with new boots. They discuss what type of boot you should look for depending on the terrain and species you are hunting. They discuss boot materials, including full leather, leather/synthetic blends, and fully synthetic, and their pros and cons. Also, they discuss how a boot should fit, flex and stability, and height. They wrap up by talking about sock selection and some tips and tricks to help you avoid blisters. If you are looking for a new pair of boots, and who isn't, this is a great listen to help you find the perfect pair of boots for this year and several years to come.

This was the best backcountry boot podcast that I have seen. Absolutely love these podcasts.

Finally, you guys give Tall Paul props. He fitted me for a pair of boots about a month ago and I love them. Thanks Paul. Looking forward to the next podcast where you guys take him along on a hunt.

I love these videos, one thing I would add that has worked really well for me elk hunting over the past 14 years. I started taking two different pairs of boots on my hunts. Either two of different brands or two of the same brand but different models.
And I try and wear a different pair everyday, this gives your feet a different feel everyday and also lets them try out between use and reset your insoles. Yes, I know if you are bivy hunting this can't be done everyday but if you can change them out anytime you have a chance, it dose make a difference.
    Keep the videos coming guys!

There have been times in videos and podcasts that sometimes I feel like I can’t afford to keep financially with western hunting. But I really think you guys did a great job with this podcast covering what an average person can get and afford and do. Thanks again, lots of great information!

It's not about keeping up with the Joneses. These guys are able to test the best gear (a dream job). But there's plenty of gear out there at lower costs that work just fine.

Schnees boots are an amazing boot I will probably never try anything else again after having many boot brands, but living here in Canada it was a little scary paying that money the first time and hoping they work out. Canada is so far behind and limited on gear and access so go hunt online has been huge for a lot of us.

I’d be happy to tell you I’m the kenetrek guy 😂. I just feel like with my experience leather breathes better. I wear a leather boot everyday of my life and they never stink. Get a synthetic boot which I’ve done and they stink like hell

When are you going to get young Omar back on the podcast. I ran into Omar at a gas station in Montana in November. He was amazing and gave me a gift card for repping GOHUNT gear. Need to hear if he filled his elk tag. He showed me some pictures of a couple nice bulls.

Thank you Trail very informative. Paul is one of the most Knowledgeable on all the products at GoHunt. I would like to know what insoles he would recommend for my kenetrek Extreme 400 gr of ins. Thank you so much for sharing this.
God's Blessings to you all on all your adventures

Best all purpose boot is the Crispi Guide 200 or 400 gram insulation.

I’d be interested in knowing what the functional differences of a full Rand vs partial Rand boot would be.
Also tempted on just trying to get a pair of Salomon’s or danners on sale!

Have any of you ever tried Meindl boots? They aren't hiking specific like these ones you're reviewing, but they are the best boots I've ever worn for hiking, and they take a beating. Over 5 years of Idaho mountain abuse before the first stitch gave way. I've replaced the insoles twice and laces once.

Hi there, I have indeed owned a few pairs of Meindl boots that I purchased from Cabela's maybe fifteen plus years ago. I don't believe they are offered anymore, but the couple pairs I had were really good and I agree with your assessment.

@@trailkreitzer9163 I got mine at Cabelas also. It looks like Meindl has taken all sales in house, no more retailers. Since you've worn them, would you suggest any of these boots as a close match, especially with durability?

Hi there, it's a Hanwag but I'm. not certain on the exact name yet. We should have it in the gearshop mid March. It's a nice boot, relatively flexible, tacky tread and a bit taller. To me it feels like it would be a nice early to mid season hiker for moderate terrain.
