  • The Big Hunt Guys have had some great guests lately, but it’s been a while since Brady, Lorenzo, and Trail have had a chance to sit down together and catch up. This week, the guys discuss the best new gear they checked out from the SHOT Show and the Archery Trade Association. Also, on the heels of a recent article, Brady wrote for our GOHUNT site titled “How much does it actually cost to apply for hunting tags in every Western state,” the guys discuss what they believe are the best bang for your buck states in the West. In addition, they talk about travel planning for a road trip to Mexico since Lorenzo and Brady will be accompanying our MexiCoues deer hunt winner later this next week. This episode covers a lot of ground with plenty of laughs and good intel on new gear, application cost, and planning.

What Muzzleloader did Brady mention on the Podcast, I am looking for one to use in Arizona, Nevada and Oregon Hunts.

Not sure what one they talked about but. Go with a Cva accura v2 of one model or another or the Cva paramount. They are the absolute pinnacle of modern muzzleloaders.

Hi there, interesting question and I'll do my best to offer some thoughts. Optics - binos, spotting scope, rangefinder..I've used the same ones for years. The only time I have updated is when something new and really useful has come out, like the Sig Image stabilizing binos, or a tripod that is lighter and more functional. I've mostly used the same backpack for the past seven years. I've used others to try out and and so that I able to offer a real use case perspective but a good pack can give you years of use. Sleeping bag and pad, I've used the same one for maybe a decade. Again I've used others but for the most part I think a quality pad and bag is a long term investment. Same goes with tent/shelter. I have also been using the same camp kitchen for many years.
Things it feels like I am updating often would be things that wear out more often like boots, arrows, pants, water treatment/purification, knife blades. If I think about it and I were going to put a rank to items that are a good investment I would say optics, backpack, shelter, sleep system, camp kitchen.

The swaro birder binos do take photos and can share location that you are looking at with another person next to you. Still not a great fit for most hunters but those features are neat.

If there was 2 trailheads where you were going hunting, one at the bottom at 9k ft and the other on top at 12k ft. Which would you prefer? Would you worry about spooking game starting high?

Hi there, interesting question and there are several variables that I'd be considering before I made a decision like the time of year, where the best habitat is for that time of the year, where hunting pressure is coming from, and which one offers the better access into where I think the hunting is likely to be best. All that to say, it wouldn't concern me to start high if I thought the access there offered me a better odds at finding game, avoiding other hunting pressure, was easier and better to pack an animal out. Certainly I wouldn't suggest starting high in open terrain if I'm going to bump animals out. I may watch the wind and thermals, hike in at night, or use the topography to avoid spooking game. Lots to think about for sure!
