I just threw out two Duracells out of a 511 Flashlight because they were leaking. This happens often with those batteries when in a flashlight for a short period of time. They are junk. They used to be quality cells but not anymore.
@JW L Man, I've done the same. I got so pissed off I cut the housing of the maglite just to get them out of there. I've got a mini-maglite right now with the same situation. I've had knock-off brands that I've left in flashlights and remotes for years and none of them did that. I won't buy Duracell garbage anymore.
When mercury was mandated out of alkaline batteries, that was what kept them from leaking. So I am told. Might be why cheap overseas batteries last longer not leaking. www.epa.gov/mercury/mercury-batteries www.congress.gov/104/plaws/publ142/PLAW-104publ142.pdf “During the 1990's, Energizer® removed Mercury and Cadmium from all household batteries (AAA, AA, C, D and 9V), introducing the first zero-added mercury AA battery commercially available. During the same time, we converted our hearing aid batteries from mercuric oxide to a zinc air form, eliminating 90% of the mercury. “
@JW L What model MAGLITEs were they? I have a theory that this issue doesn't happen with Incandescents. Perhaps Alkaline D cells can't handle 1000lumen LEDs which probably draw more current than a 40 Lumen Incandescent. I only just bought a 3 D Cell (Incandescent) MAGLITE last week so we'll see how long it lasts on Alkalines. I always remove them every morning or even right after my night walk which I use it for.

Matt is a happy person so is his good friend who puts LED head band lights during day time! You need to watch them. They are happy people. Matt, you are the best... err. Your friend too. Where’s he, these days? 73s.
Orbtronic makes my favorite 16340 protected cells @ 880 mAh (which as far as I know is the highest rated on market?) And as far as a high drain, unprotected 16340 gos, I still reccomend and use the white Vapcell 800 mAh cells with a 7A discharge. Thanks
Orbtronic 21700 is in all my 21700 lights except one of my Acebeams which came with an Acebeam 21700. Orbtronic 18650 High Drain seems to work great. Their other "dual protection" 18650 is good but too long for some lights. Samsung 30Q is my go to flat top 18650.
Dude you’re the ultimate nerd and your channel is great. You really should explore lasers a bit more. You would absolutely love them I swear to you! There’s a reason why they’ve changed the world in so many ways and are still very important in the science community. For 14500 my research led me to the KeepPower 800mAh protected and the purple Efest 650mAh unprotected. I looked for your favourite Windyfires but couldn't find them instock when I was looking a year so ago. My 18650's are all VT6C's so nothing new to add to your list. I'm not happy with any of the NiMH batteries I have and was going to replace them with Eneloops - I'll add Tenergy to the options list. I avoid alkalines because of the risk of leaking.
For Chinese cells, I've found that Liitokala are reliably good value, and not suffering from the "fake ratings" of many Chinese cells. They also make some nice chargers and other stuff, the engineer series chargers are cool.
@Rabbi Coomershekel McPornstien If you're referring to the various cells with impossible ratings, that test to maybe 900mAh, then yes... Liitokala on the other hand are quite good in my experience.
I've ordered the batteries with the flashlight from manufacturer of the flashlights. So I or we may have limited choices. Most people are like, box store lights are good. But we flashaholics know different! Thanks Matt, and thank to all others for sharing good info!
Just started watching information on the channel. Got caught up with Olight flashlights, and purchased a bunch of Tenergy rechargeable batteries when I figured out it would be better to run rechargeable than buying alkaline all the time. Still trying to figure out some of the different sizes & shapes, and the always mentioned protected vs. unprotected?? I need to start watching from the beginning, or indicate a baseline training video for the basics. Thanks.
Matt, I have a question for you, but it's not about flashlights, it is about batteries. I have a 12v cordless drill with a dead battery pack. I am going to rebuild the battery pack, but I was wondering if I can replace the 1.2v 1300mAh Sub-C NiCd batteries with 1.2v 2000mAh Sub-C NiMH batteries? Will the battery pack still power the drill with no problems and will the charger I have still recharge the batteries if they are a different chemistry? What do you think? Thanks much. Love your videos.
Yep you should be seeing 8000mAH to 10000mAH from a D cell NiMH if they actually use all the space for battery. Though to be fair, a decent quality AA size NiMH can satisfy the current draw for devices that could work with alkaline batteries; you just don't get nearly as much runtime.
Hello Matt, about the ONLY thing I know about electricity is that if you grab the wrong wire, you'll find out in a hurry😢. Thanks for the help you give🤗, as I'm needing batteries - 18650's (button and flat). If I remember to go to this, then great. I know about the mAh and what "protected" means😮. It's just a SCAM when 18650's are listed above 3??? mAh, right?🤬 Oh, when a light doesn't have included batteries, or say nothing more than 18650, 26650 etc., have you found what should/not be used in led lights?🤔 Should I only use slow discharge for lights and fast for vape mods? 🤔 Any advice on that, this is an issue and the best cheap place to get them. (For vape I currently use 2 Sony, not protected flat tops, which I've used for several yrs. without issues.) I do use a Nitecore charger, not the D2 but before it. I don't have the "lux" as you do, for sure! A "multimeter", come on, why won't they just tell you how many meters?🤣 Oh btw, I understand that if you have a lot of batteries, that'll mean "the big house"!🤣 Okay, I'll "ohm" it! Hey, have fun, be safe. Take care, "God Bless", sincerely Randy. 👍👍🙏😇👊 P.S.: Sorry if I've missed any vids on any of these!👊

This may be a dumb question but why would anybody ever use an unprotected cell? Is it not safer to always use protected cells? I guess I just don't know the implications of both.
You get lower resistance, a shorter battery, and fewer components to potentially fail. For 99% of people in 99% of applications a protected cells is probly best. If you buy quality protected cells they are pretty much always the safer option. Unproteced is mostly used for pushing boundaries. When you need the highest possible drive currents etc.
Hey Matt, have you tested or tried the Molicel P26a cells? I have been pretty impressed.. Just ordered a FW4A! ...super stoked to get it in. And anticipate stelar performance.
The lack of mention of Moli in this video is disturbing! Mooch lists the P26A and the P42A as the best all around cells for their respective sizes (18650 and 21700). The VTC6 does trade blows with the P26A, but the P42A is clearly a better cell than the 40T.
@@jeffbeasley8235It depends on the application for a vape device yes they are great but for a flashlight or a radio your better off with a Panasonic 3500 mah one
041820/1102hCA. Matt, thanks for the video. As always, I’ve enjoyed viewing your videos, descriptions, comments and recommendations. Needless to say the flood light dance, too😀. It has been over 3 years and WINDY-FIRE IMR14500@600mAh is still strong and the reading is 631mAh. KEEPPOWER 26650/5200mAh protected cell is going on strong. It’s a powerhouse. I’m using an LG21700@5000mAh on the 1D Maglite, is unbelievable. I use OPUS Charger for all the above. Enjoy the weekend, take care and stay safe. 73s
windy-fire?? lmao any battery with "fire" in its name is probably crap,i know i never heard of them, EBL are very good on 14500, as is the newer efest offerings
Why does the Okpro in your video lok so much different than the one in the Amazon link? Has this product changed this much in 2 years? Is it just as good? Do you still recommend it?
I'm quite surprised you didn't mention lithium primary cells, for example Energizer's Ultimate Lithium AA/AAA. Even though they're expensive they do have their use cases and they definitely have a place in my emergency kit.
Best battery for flashlights sitting in your glove compartment, especially after it's been sitting in the car for a few years, it's 20F outside, and you need a working flashlight is probably the Energizer Ultimate Lithium primary cell. Way more capacity, extremely low self-discharge (much longer shelf life), flater discharge curve and far better low temperature capacity. Test?
I think TESLA has weaned out of 18650s and are into 21700s. TESLA has a giant li-ion manufacturing facility in CA, mostly into 21700. The energy derived out of 21700 is just about 10% higher than 18650, though.
Thanks for your reviews and comprehensive information, you provide the most informative and helpful advice on all things related to the flashlight. If I could though query you for a detail pertaining to the ACEBEAM W30 I purchased one at your recommendation and have thus-far found to be a valuable asset, the flashlight came with a defuser lens that cast a wide illumination. Might I ask if you could find for me the size of the lens, I would like to find a flip-up filter adapter so the defuser might be left in place, so if the throw-beam might be utilized by a simple flipping-up of the lens and flipping-down return it to defuse. If you believe this is possible could you please give me your thoughts, I would appreciate any feedback that you may have...
Is it dangerous to wear battery packs near your brain when wearing a headlamp? is there any type of magnetism or something that could affect your brain in any way? I have a headlamp with two 3.7v batterys right in the back of my head. What say you?
I don't understand anything you're talking about... but I want to. Is there anywhere I can go, or any video you know of, that would help me learn about different types of batteries and all the electrical things you're talking about?
Great video Matt! I have the Acebeam K75, and I have been using it with the Acebeam 18650 cells that came with it. But, one of the cells is now dead... and they are hard to find. What cell do you recommend i buy to replace my dead cell? Dealer must ship to Norway.
I ordered some batteries by accident. They are fenix brand ARB-14 1600U input 5V/1A micro-USB 1600mAh size AA 1.5V 2 4Wh. Rather than return them i decided to try them out. I had tried several different brands of AA and AAA rechargables and they were always 1.2 volt and no matter what mAh they were rated never seemed very good. The fenix have been working very well for me. I am seeing other brands that are AA liion 1.5V similar to the fenix but I have not tried any of them yet. These seem to be very low self discharge and they seem to last very long in the stuff I have used them in. They are fairly expensive however they may pay for them selves if they keep taking and holding a charge. Have you used them? Or any of the other brands that are offering this type battery and if so what is your take on them? I am not sure how to test the capacity to see if they are what they are rated and if they would work as well with a heavier load then what I am using them for? I think if they give comparable performance to the better disposable batteries, plus if they take and hold a charge for a good amount of time I think they would pay for themselves. Like I said I ordered by mistake thinking they were 14500 cells and decided to keep and try them. What's your thoughts. My thoughts are that you can not bulk charge them in a charger however I see some come with a USB to 4 micro USB cable and that might work well for some users?
Hi Matt, could you advise me please, i just bought the Acebeam K75 but want to use the EAGTAC 18650 i have a lot of they are 3400mah 3.7 v 12.6wh but i can see it reads on them as over charge protection as 4.25v-4.3v and short protection as 4A - 6A Do you think they are suitable.

Hi! I have an Astrolux MF01 mini, which claims to have 6000 lumens with the samsung 21700 40T but you only have 4000 mah; and with one simple 26650, you get 5000 mah but it can deliver 5500 lumens and even less. I´m looking for a 26650 which had more mah than the samsung, but with the amount of Amps that the samsung can give, so that i could have 6000 lumens with more capacity. Could the sockli deliver that amount of power? Just for you to know: with the 26650 that I have, you get 15,4 amps in the tail, and with the samsung i get 18 Amps in the same tail. Can the sockli deliver that power? You said that it can power any flashlight you know.
windy-fire?? lmao any battery with "fire" in its name is probably crap,i know i never heard of them, EBL are very good on 14500, as is the newer efest offerings
another great 26650 is the ijoy with the 5 legs on the positive
How about those loyal-as-a-dog Sanyo NCR18650GA batteries?
we stocked up on eneloops for our AA / 14500 lights
Anyone else super curious as the the battery tester us used? An 8amp discharge rate and computer logging sounds rather juicy!
Plz can you give me your oppinion on the Ultrafire lithium batteries plz ?
Pa can you put a higher powered battery into a torch for brighter beam ??
Hello sir, i have a Sanford torch whose battery died in 3 year . So which battery should I purchase for that torch . And from where
Matt in one of your videos you used a button top sleeve on a flat top battery. How can I get some of those.
Samsung 25R are a good all round battery . All the best , love the channel .................
I only us alkaline because I live in earthquake country what good are recharge
Batteries if there’s no power?
Hmm, but Alkalines can leak, even Duracells. You could just recharge a bunch and use them when you need them.
Where do I find the “hjk battery comparitor”???
Why does the Okpro in your video lok so much different than the one in the Amazon link? Has this product changed this much in 2 years? Is it just as good? Do you still recommend it?
keeppower or shockli is better imr 26650 in your o-pin-ion?
Where is a good place to learn the type of electrical work to make your own flashlight?
Budget Light forum and CandlePower Forum. I also have a few DIY videos on my channel.
Thanks guys!
I'm quite surprised you didn't mention lithium primary cells, for example Energizer's Ultimate Lithium AA/AAA.
Even though they're expensive they do have their use cases and they definitely have a place in my emergency kit.
Orbtronic’s 👍🏼
I have a nebo redline blast flashlight it uses 6 AA is there another battery alternative
Hey, can you tell me what size high drain battery I can use to replace 2 x cr123A. I want 1 long enough to replace 2 cr123a. HELP PLEASE
Yes 18650 will work
You should do a review of battery chargers!
Why is it so difficult to find 18650 batteries?
What are best for my old Fenix TK45?
I love the confetti and the cake!
Test?
I bet eneloops still have charge when those lithium primaries are dead
it seems though, that 21700,,, is the future right?
I believe Tesla settled on the 18650 size as having the optimum power density.
I think TESLA has weaned out of 18650s and are into 21700s. TESLA has a giant li-ion manufacturing facility in CA, mostly into 21700. The energy derived out of 21700 is just about 10% higher than 18650, though.
OKPRO Battery Station 540 watt - not available?!
How good are the Thrunite brand batteries?
Thank you for an another excellent video!
I gained so much battery and current amps mah knowledge between vaping and flashlight.
BatteryUniversity dot com is a good place to start for a noob.
@@rpbajb thanks
What about CR123/CR123A batteries? I wanna get a Surefire 6P, what's your opinion on that flashlight? I'm also aware of rechargeable ones (RCR123)
Great video Matt! I have the Acebeam K75, and I have been using it with the Acebeam 18650 cells that came with it. But, one of the cells is now dead... and they are hard to find. What cell do you recommend i buy to replace my dead cell? Dealer must ship to Norway.
What about 26650 ludikola? Have you heard of them i run them when using my acebeam ft03
can you do a test on 18650 torches that are also power banks?
Dont know if you have been told but some company called military grade is using clips from your video in their advertisements.
A very impressive video ,Thanks..
What the best 14500 battery. What do you think of the eagletac d25c mark 11 nichia ? Thanks.
14500 gtf 2800mAh?
Does amazon sell any quality 18650 and 26650 batteries?
RediLast 18650 are very good, too.
Great videos!
What's the best 10850 Battery for flashlights?
Hi Matt, could you advise me please, i just bought the Acebeam K75 but want to use the EAGTAC 18650 i have a lot of they are 3400mah 3.7 v 12.6wh but i can see it reads on them as over charge protection as 4.25v-4.3v and short protection as 4A - 6A Do you think they are suitable.
Those batteries look very good but my country doesn't allow to ship it in so I am using cheap and low-quality batteries for my Trunite mini tn30.
How do the 18650 and the 21700 batteries that you tested stack up to the bigger name batteries like the Fenix or Olight batteries? I would really like to see that comparison.
I heard that the ikea nimh batteries are made in the exact same factory as eneloop batteries and that they are pretty much the exact same for a fraction of the price. I'm not sure if it's true but I bought a few packs a year back and they do perform great
How do you feel about the KeepPower 18650 with the Sanyo inside (3500mAh)? It's what came with my rather expensive Modlite PLHv2.
what do you think about nitecore batteries ? Is it similar to acebeam and imalent batteries ?
I would apreciate if you can answer me to this quiestion because i would like to have the best performance in the flashlight, despite of the amount of heat that the Astrolux emanates.
Thank you and great video!!!!
Álvaro
@Eric B But this cell is the same cell as the shockli? I've been looking for the vapcell that you are talking about to see how much did it cost, and i can't find It anywhere on the internet. Is the vapcell as well as the shockli??
Thank you Eric
Do you have any uv light videos like for sanitizing?
What do you think about EBL 18650? I've been using these for a few years now and I've never had any issues with them...
Molicel P42a 21700 is a great cell.
