I agree with your wife. Steak Umms are tasty for a quick and easy cheesesteak! Grilled mushrooms are a great addition as well. Provolone is my wife’s go to cheese, while I like it paired with Cheese Whiz.
I grew up with a single parent home with my mom. She was a waitress, so she would bring home steak-umms from her work because they used them in the steak sandwiches and steak salads. So needless to say, steak-umms were an integral part of my childhood, and I will always have memories sitting down eating steak-umm sandwiches with ketchup lol Now that I'm an adult, with a griddle, I add more flavor and use different condiments but every once in a while I'll just do a plain steakumm and ketchup! 😏 Nostalgia.
Hey I completely understand...Honestly it seems like there are quite a few out there like yourself that with the history of these.. I myself had never had em and Definitely understand the Nostalgia. thanks for sharing your story
@@michaelredd4676 Made some tonight...Just bought a box of 14 steaks, buy one get one free. So 28 steaks for $8. Not bad at all. One box just fed me twice, my wife, my son, and my dogs. lol So It's definitely worth a meal. I used deli rolls, swiss, provolone, and dukes mayo 😏
Same here….steak ums in the late 70s was a staple for me. A couple slices over white bread with ketchup was a perfect lunch in grade school. Funny how I think back to what I thought was good eating back in the day.
I’ve been making these for my family for over 25 years, my husband and sons love them . I use American cheese and I make 3 steaks per sandwich , also add the fried onions that I first fry in butter . Enjoyed watching your cooking process.
My first job as a teenager was working in a sub/pizza shop. I've made a thousand cheesesteak and hamburger subs. We used those frozen wafers. Put the sliced onion down, add a little butter, put the steak wafer on top (back then instead of 2 slices in one wafer it was 5 slices, shrinkflation). We'd let that cook, flip it and on with the cheese. The wafer was never chopped up. They sold like wild fire. These days not so good. I do buy the steak pucks at a local restaurant supply store (40 to a box) and use those. They are pretty good. My kids just bought me a Blackstone 36 inch griddle and I'm waiting for some replacement parts. It's a little different from the steel griddle I used all those years ago, but I'm glad I found your channel to help me out. BTW, I can't stand provolone cheese, a co-worker at that sub place told me that it smelled like (rotted bleep, use your imagination) and I've never been able to eat it unless I don't know it's there. Keep up the great work. P.S. Army Navy game tomorrow.... Go Army!
Sorry but I agree with the wife, been eating these things for many years and love them. But yes you are correct there's NO comparison to the "real" thing. Just have to tell yourself that when you make them, lol. I do like doing the onions and peppers first in a iron skillet then add some beef broth and then the beef, break it up first while it's frozen. Let simmer a tad until they are cooked. Oh,they suck if you brown them first as they get kinda rubbery.Awsome video guys.
As someone who has lived and worked in Philly for many years, and eaten more cheesesteaks than my doctor would have liked me too... I can say one thing for sure. None of the products you sampled here in this video will ever replace a real cheesesteak. Still enjoyed the video, and now I seriously want my own flattop griddle!
@@TheFlatTopKing I am a cheesesteak hoagie fan. I like lettuce, tomato, and pickles on mine with real cheese. (Another option up here in Philly is Wiz... As in Cheese Wiz.)
I purchased the large box from a wholesaler of the pre measured meat, and honestly its just as good as fancy cheesesteaks I get around here. I find I'm able to easily portion control or adjust the meat for a person I'm making it for, and I don't have to worry about remembering to pre-freeze a steak to shave it, or any of the challenges that come with preparing any cut of steak. These also work good for variety of cooking methods or stir fry (which on the griddle would be amazing I think)
Same with me .. I buy the bulk box of 1/2 in frozen steaks that are shaped like a ribeye and made for restaurants.. They are really good! We use them for Steak Quesadillas ,Steak and Eggs and sometimes a little in the Sunday Sauce for extra flavor.. Having said that , I don’t like the three brands you listed in this video.. I’ve found a flavor inconsistency that actually tastes fake ..
What I liked about this video is the way you griddle. When the cheese didn’t do like you thought you didn’t panic. I’m new at t this so a lot of things you do look so easy but when I do them it’s always got some flaws. Thanks for sharing. Also I’ve been using pastrami sliced super thin for my Ruben’s. Worked great
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Philip...when you say making it look easy, a few videos back we posted "Our first griddle cook together" with my wife and I if you haven’t watched it take a look. It describes that exactly, helping someone when I think it looks easy but to them its completely different. We plan on making more like this video to help connect to more viewers like your self..
With the price of ribeye and everything else in the grocery store as of lately, I and my family are more than willing to sacrifice a little flavor. They looked fantastic and I'm sure they tasted great, I would eat these all day every day.
I did a quick break down for prices around my area for this Steakumms -- $9 for 15oz we needed roughly 3oz for 1 sandwich 2 slabs of meat = 6 oz and roughly $2 for one Sandwich Ribeye at Publix $5.79 a lb Yes i know it on sale but... Ground Beef $4 a lb typical price Choice Sirloin runs around $6 I think the idea of them being cheap compared to what is available when you can use anything to replace it gets overlooked..Once cooked the amount of grease that comes out from them is alarming.. Just a quick roundabout of other options,,,
Cooked in a little butter and some spg and the difference isn't that much honestly. Once you add the onions and peppers and cheese it's almost indistinguishable, the biggest difference is the texture really.
In the late '80s we had steakumms in Canada then they were discontinued... I recently had one when I was in America and it did not taste very good I'm wondering if they changed the recipe since the '80s or if my taste buds have changed
Great experiment. I just did some Cheesesteaks on the griddle tonight, but didn't use frozen. I agree with you, probably can't tell the difference between them if blind folded, but fresh is so much better.
Spot on...to me it was all about the texture or the lack of....just no chew...no bite..just blah. Many other options I can choose after having this, heck even ground beef
The difference is there's no 'fight' / variation from bite to bite in processed meats (ground up then 'glued' and pressed back together) and even if you don't noticeably realize it every other part of your process does. I hope that makes sense. With processed foods every single bite is the same (normally, unless you got the batch made from maintenance scrapings LOL) where Ma Nature thrives on minute variations of texture, flavor, fat content...
My family was from Philly. We visited Philly on regular basis. However we live in Oklahoma and Texas. You could not get a good Philly cheesesteak anywhere (at least in the 80’s and early 90’s). My dad (who grew up and Philly) would use steak ums because of the time saving not because it tasted like it. Worked all day and didn’t have time to do the prep or the money to buy the steak.
Chris this might sound lame but its the truth...thanks for taking time out to comment on something like that...I have found that during this crazy UA-cam adventure I have found that some of the cooking I do will lead down to great memory lane either for me or for viewers...thanks for taking time out..
Being from PA, I have to tell you this meat was called Chip or Chipped Steak and was readily available in our local stores. None of these taste as good, but they are passable substitutes for the real thing.
@@TheFlatTopKing Honestly, since my parents died I don't have anyone with a connection in my old hometown so I can't find them anywhere. The meat used to be available in local stores, but not in the chain stores. I do not know of any local stores still in business so I do not have any connections.
Growing up poor, other than an occasional treat from the local sub shop, my only Philly cheesesteak experience was Steakumm. Like you said, it’s about people’s budget for sure. Definitely agree with you as an adult now and having my own money for fresh ribeye on my Blackstone now. Good video
yeah i think after comments run through it seems like people with history with these can have a place with them and brings back memories...I have never had them that I know of and being this far down the life road I completely understand, fresh is hands down another level. Plus I would rather have a chopped cheese or poor mans cheesesteak than these
Another great vid! Grew up with the Steak-ums, but haven't had them in 20+ years. Gonna have to give this a try. Thanks for bringing us another great griddle test!
Just got a Blackstone for Christmas and this is the first thing I’m gonna cook on it. I love cheesesteaks and have not had a steak Um in probably 20 years.
Grew up on steal-umms like others have said. Sure, it' snot a traditional cut you would get in a philly cheese steak, but I'm good with that. It makes great sandwiches and it's quick! So yes, I'm with the Flat Top Queen, I could eat that all day for lunch. Now, I've had some really bad traditional philly cheese steaks where they used cuts with way too much fat and it's chewy and I just don't like that at all. But I totally get what the King thinks of it, too. But, I'll keep using my steak-umms. Fast tasty meals. :D
I've grown up and have lived my whole life in the Metro Detroit area and there is a sub shop called Tubby's that has been around since 1968. They're signature sub is the steak and cheese. But they make it with steam-umm style sheets of meat (well, with lettuce, tomato and italian dressing but again, it's a different sub). Now, this was all I new about steak and cheese growing up (although my favorite is the pizza steak and cheese ; same sammich with some pizza sauce ; trust me, it's great!). I found out about philly steak and cheese a little later in life but they are 2 different subs. You can't top freshly slice lean meat grilled up like that, but good ones are very limited (in my humble opinion) in this area. But I really like Tubby's steak and cheese. I know what they are and I enjoy them for what they are. But the "this way or no way at all" camps are really only hurting themselves by missing out on things that can also be good, just in a different way. I like differences so I can appreciate something in multiple ways. Just means I have more options. :D Keep making these videos! Really like and appreciate them!
It looks like Steak-Umms have changed since I last had them 40 years ago. I didn't even know they were still around. I may get some and give it a try. I remember when they first came out and I saw the commercial and talked my Mom into getting some. It wound up being something we ate semi-regularly for a bit. It was one of the first things I was allowed to cook on my own, right after I mastered heating up Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup. It seems like I used to make 2 "steaks" and fold them in half between 2 pieces of white bread (I hated cheese at this time in my life and still hate most condiments). But I remember them being more like actual sliced steaks piled up and not as processed, but I was a stupid kid at the time and didn't know any better.
I use them with no problem. Not as good as a thin sliced ribeye but for convenience I like them. Just season them well and they can be tolerated. Good video.
Back in the mid 70's my first wife ( New Jersey native) introduced me to Steak-umm. However, I have not made this on my Blackstone, yet. Is it possable for you place a link for the seasonings that you used?
His wife is trying her damndest to help him do the video properly, getting to all of the points of an informational video. Kudos to her for being patient and helpful.
Amen...its a struggle for me...I can teach with no problems....but have me remember and recite.....absolutely not...wish it was not like that...but its my biggest weakness...cheers and Honestly thanks for calling it like it is vs others who put us down....
You guys cooked it up just how I like em. Green pepper, onion, White America with the Steak ums brand. I'm from Philly. This was a STAPLE in the freezer.
I finally broke down last summer and did frozen beef patties. They were great. But what I liked mostly was I could quickly without forethought make burgers. I see this frozen meat video having the same benefit. It's another way of keeping your "pantry" stocked up. It doesn't have to be the best. But when you're jonesing for something it will save you from having to go to the grocery store for ingredients. And that's a good thing. Especially if you see frozen items on sale. Stock up and save some money. Have a great day 🌤 😀.
@@TheFlatTopKing Thank You .... maybe because of high fat content and high salt . Not sure . We enjoy shopping in Buffalo NY food stores like Wegmans . Take Care .
Fire and smoke society seasoning is where it's at.... "SHAKE TASTY" is my favorite...red, white and blue container...Mmmmm.... best smash burgers ever!!!
I usually get my local grocery’s shaved steak that’s fresh, but when they’re out, steak umms are a perfect replacement. I got them recently on sale and they’re just as good as I remember from being a kid.
I bought Steak-Eze from Sam's Club (Costco has a version) and they were good. It's a different type of frozen steak, they're frozen patties that break into strips when heated.
I was born and raised in Philly. Make them however you like them! However, a traditional Philly cheesesteak that was made everywhere when I was growing up 50 years ago was steak and American cheese. Most people would get fried onions and ketchup. (Yes, I said ketchup!). Never saw anyone get peppers on them back then. Cooper brand sharp American cheese is the best cheese for a cheesesteak. it has the best flavor and easily melts into the beef. Cheese whiz is for tourists! It’s getting harder and harder to get a good cheesesteak anymore, and the newer places in the last 20+ years make them with different combinations like you made. Fried Pepper and egg on a hoagie roll was the go to on meatless Fridays.
I grew up with steakums as a regular meal in the rotation. When my wife and I got our flat top, she bought them and they were tasty but brought me back to those days of excruciating indigestion. Recently, our Wal Mart order subbed out the Great Value brand. To my surprise, it was SO much better. I just checked the label and the ingredients are more than just “beef”. Definitely update this video and try the Great Valu brand.
i keep steak ums in the freezer. walmart great value frozen ones too. they make great cheesesteaks, just get good bread. bread is like 80% of the game, and get some cooper sharp sliced cheese. Mix it in with fried onions, hit it with hot sauce as a condiment and side of cherry peppers you good
All i have is a stove and a pan but still love watching the videos! I love steakums! I make breakfast burritos, sandwiches or whatever else i think up and its good. I even make my version of a McDonald's steak bagel, just put some Montreal steak seasoning and it tastes just like the McDonald's version.
Ohhhhhh..... bagel steak and cheese!! Yum. Gonna make me some. I make breakfast sandwiches and burritos for my son's construction crew. They love them especially on a cold Maine morning working outside!!! Brrrr. Now they are giving me suggestions! Lol 😅😅😅❤
Love the experiment guys!! I have another brand at my Jewel that is not too bad. I will buy fresh and freeze it then slice and cook it to see the difference.
FTK, First off your wife is an angel and brings so much to the video. I rarely comment on a video and by. My humble opinion, very cheeky comment. That stuff is frat party drunk eating, but the first cheese steak I ever had was steakum and it was so good. Its like an unrolled hot dog consistently. Video made me smile after a hard day at work. Keep the great videos coming. Merry Christmas and peace Luke T
I usually try to pick up some frozen shaved steaks but when i cant get those, these are actually pretty tasty. Not the best thing in the world but you can make something pretty tasty with it without spending a small fortune.
Watch the Pats cheese steak video on you tube cooking on the huge flat top . The slicer portion is cool believe me they make plenty of money to cover that rib eye and pay that army of servers .I was born in Philly and Too much attitude there for me . All the frozen steaks look like they were run through a chipper but taste ok. good vid !
Im with your wife i like the frozen steakum brand or the other alternatives and yes i have had a cheese steak from philly and would eat these brands and be happy. Im a first time viewer
@@TheFlatTopKingthese were pretty good taste especially the cost some these subs shops are charging $19.99 a sub sandwich (with french fries) that's crazy. . but like you say, I'm thinking not high quality meat. I would say it's gets a Grade C+ 😮
Interesting...i knew places used different cuts etc...it's nice to have someone say hey your right vs i don't know crap and I live there and the ONLY steak used is ribeye blah blah....
Neil you are OCD like me! It would make me so nervous to stand there while my griddle was still dirty. I don’t even take the food in so that I can stay behind and clean the last part of griddle. 😂
Thanks for doing the research. I had never considered this option, and thanks to you, I won’t have to. The packaged, processed, meat “simulation” just didn’t look that appetizing compared to the real thing.
I have not had a roast but have used sirloin steaks I have taken home and thinly sliced My honest opinion is this...it gets hard to eat because it stringy,. it pulls and not tears. I would balance that with an extra few cuts...slice thin the rough chop...that way when you take a bite the ingredients aren't falling out and you have a better chance to get a clean bite. Flavor wise its all about seasoning...when done correctly its hard to tell the difference minus the moisture you miss from ribeyes..
Another style of frozen steak sandwich meat is called a "breakaway" steak, I used to find them at Sam's... they'd be similar to what you'll find in, say, a sports bar... it's literally like shaved steak formed in a cryovac package that you throw on the griddle and break it in to pieces. I'd say they fall firmly between these sheet-style steaks and fresh shaved meat... worth looking for & trying IMO
a lot of places in the tri-state area use frozen steaks. It can come packaged like you have or in 30lb blocks that you put on the griddle and rotate to scrap off the partially cooked steak.. or I should say "did" because it was 30+ years ago that I was making those deliveries and about that long since I moved to Florida.. I dont recognize the center box but I use either the steak-ums, philly gourmet or the great value style from walmart/sams.. while they can all be cooked and served whole I like to break up the frozen steaks before cooking them.. People DO get steak sandwiches without cheese... the roll really makes the sandwich, a bun like you used is ok but a crusty torpedo roll is better, I would use a tortilla before a bread bun but thats just my opinion . I will admit I wouldnt turn down any of the ones you made
Grew up on steakums. While its not the as fresh beef if you treat them right they will make a fantastic sub. We also use hots on our subs which is a game changer!
I have never brought myself to trying steakums before. Sounds like all three of these are just about the same. It's great that you tried them. I figure why the heck not. LOL great video again Neal!
As a man who knows his way around a steak and who appreciates good Wagyu. I can honestly say for a budget meal, if done right and paired well it'll be excellent. The best cooks can take the cheapest ingredients and make it taste like it deserves a Michelin star or at least one AA Rosette. At least I know now that doesn't matter what brand I buy I'm just a stickler for labels. Thank you for sharing this.
I love Steak-ums. But I consider them in a different category for steak sandwiches/cheese steaks. Fresh taste different, that's all. Do I like fresh better? I don't know, I don't think about it when I'm having one or the other.
If you’re poor in on a budget, Stake umm is a really good choice if you can’t afford a ribeye, shaved from your local butcher in the translucent slices💯they work ok for the cash amount
This one was too much fun man!!! Gotta say tho....I'm with Amy!! I kinda like SteakUmms!!! They remind me of gyro meat, and while they do not stack up at all to fresh shaved rib-eye, they're just kinda like their own thing, like hot dogs or something! We have a pizza place here in town where they make sub rolls out of their pizza dough and stuff them with what I know are SteakUmms, cheese, iceberg, Italian dressing and mayo and I can't lie, it's soooo good!! And you made them look killer as always!!
After the video later that day thats exactly what we said...taste like frozen gyro meat. Thats what we said to use the rest...season differently and good to go...I dont doubt its has its place. It was completely my fault how the ending happened but I could not get what a good one tastes like out of my head...I was trying not to compare the 2 and it just kept pushing me that way
I think “worth it” is definitely subjective. There is no way that frozen budget meat will be as good as a cheesesteak made from a good fresh ribeye but I think this could totally be “worth it”, especially considering an individuals situation. I’ve never tried steak umms but another recent video had me questioning whether or not they could be “worth it” and it seems like in a pinch, the answer would be yes for me. I’m excited to try them but as far as a great cheesesteak goes, I’m holding off my expectations. For a quick, cheap, easy meal, I think this will hit 100%.
Ok so there's a level of nostalgia here... Grew up with Steak-Umms. Part of me loves that flavor! The Philly Gourmet is what my local spot has, and it's good to keep in the freezer. This is a weeknight cook, not meant to be gourmet cheese steaks. Everything has its place, just like the burgers.
Man although I do 100 agree..maybe because I dont have history with it I cant...now Amy and both girls like em but I could not eat it and think about a good one...it was extremely hard for me to separate the 2...
The serving size is definitely small on these. I like Steak-eze from Sam's Club better than the Philly Gourmet or Steak-umm. You're right the brands you have are pretty interchangeable. Most people that have had the frozen cheesesteaks when I've cooked them agree with your wife, they'd eat them all day. We use smoked provolone and top with Cheez Wiz.
Steak-eze is definitely the way to go if you're using frozen. I gave a box to my babysitter and it turns out her daughter worked at a local pizza & sub place. The daughter said that what they used looked exactly like the Steak-eze and this place had a pretty good reputation.
Just watched the steakum video, i agree with your wife, i truly prefer the these frozen steakum over the so called fresh, because of the tenderness, only i cook them in a cast iron skillet with all the ingredients mixed in with the meat, only i add a shot of worcestershire sauce and sweet and hot peppers, put on a amoroso bun , with american yellow or provolon cheese, with the cheese tucked inside the bun, and all the meat and ingredients added on top.
I like your porch set up. What kind of ceiling do you have? I'm thinking of putting my griddle on my enclosed porch but worried about the grease ruining the ceiling
@@TheFlatTopKing lol I first had one years ago watching the Michigan Ohio St game at a viewing party, this dude just keep pumping them out. Lol he called them Heart Attacks
I second this. I had something similar at a Buc-ees and it was incredible. I think it was just brisket, egg, and cheese. I think it could be even better with some more stuff thrown in.
@@irwfcm the local place had cheese, skillet potatoes, grilled onions and peppers as options for the taco. The salsa could be added to the eggs being scrambled.
Thanks for posting. There's a box of steak umms in my freezer. I bought them for use on my indoor griddle, but have been hesitant to try them. Now I might. I have some au jus mix in the pantry. Would that be good, do you think?
I used to buy these, but lately the refrigerated version of shaved, chopped steak is cheaper at Aldi's. Granted you need to use it in a few days, but if you're preparing it that night it doesn't matter. Having eaten all of those 3 brands you have for this video, I will say the quality of the roll has a bigger factor in taste and quality of the cheesesteak than which of those brands you use.
After watching the whole video, I agree fresh is better with a quality cut of meat. I’ve had a traditional Philly at Tony Luke’s as well. Wasn’t really impressed though. I personally prefer my homemade with steakums on a toasted bun. For your cheese on top try putting it in a metal sauce cup on the side and pouring it on. Good job brother.
I am glad that you did this steak video. I was always wondering how to cook it.I subscribed to your website, thanks for your time and effort that you put in your video.
I am relatively close to Philly and I am not a fan of the two that are across the street from each other, of which I have had both. The other joints throughout the city and region I have not had but, in videos, they seem to be what I eat near me. The frozen have always been my go to at home on my stove or griddle due to cost and that we enjoy them. Thanks for sharing.
thanks for commenting...just curious if you don't mind. Can you go back and forth. Being from there would or do you consider using other cuts of meats.
@@TheFlatTopKing If you are asking have I or would I consider a fresh cut of beef, ribeye etc., to make homemade. I would every once in a while if I didn't have the tastebuds of a billy goat😃 and if the economy wasn't in the condition that it is. I can eat fresh or frozen and like both but, I lean towards the frozen probably only because I am making it my way while a cheesesteak shop only has so many options and etc. I hope that answers your question.

@@LumberjackPa no its cool. I’m just trying to get from a legit vs a blah. Yeah I did both. See to me i think it was more about texture. When you get a different cut it gives you chew or pull effect. Just my 2 cents. I appreciate it
So I both grew up 30 mins outside Center City Philly - and Cheesesteaks are *everywhere* (the best ones are from the worst-looking, strip-mall, Mom & Pop pizzerias & sandwich-shops...) - and I also grew up having Steak'umms probably once a week. My Dad was a single, hardworking father, and this was quick, cheap, easy, and everyone liked it. Just FYI- the Philly Gourmet is literally the same thing as Steak'umm - I mean it's *the same thing* - it's their value-brand label. Look at the box ... you mentioned it you just didn't pick up on it, the addresses are the same as is the nutritional info. I *believe* The Philly Steak is their "value value" brand- like you get at 'discount grocers' - for me that would be like Save-a-Lot ... whereas in premium stores like Publix, you have Steakumms right now to Philly Gourmet, just half the price. They certainly *LOOKED* different - maybe they use the scraps lol? But while I agree it's not ribeye steak , it's good to me - and BTW *NOBODY* in the Tri-State Area calls it a "Philly" ... the #1 way to show someone you've never been to Philly is to call a Cheesesteak a Philly.
I agree with your wife. Steak Umms are tasty for a quick and easy cheesesteak! Grilled mushrooms are a great addition as well. Provolone is my wife’s go to cheese, while I like it paired with Cheese Whiz.

Great tip Jason...honestly great insight..thanks for commenting
@@TheFlatTopKing yes I watched it. Rolling out dough is hard the first time but like everything there are little tricks to it. Thanks
Love your videos, you guys are the best. You too seem to make decisions together and respect both. GJ
With the price of ribeye and everything else in the grocery store as of lately, I and my family are more than willing to sacrifice a little flavor. They looked fantastic and I'm sure they tasted great, I would eat these all day every day.
I love frozen steak-umms. I grew up eating them a lot, as long as it tastes good, I'll eat it lol
I did a quick break down for prices around my area for this
Steakumms -- $9 for 15oz we needed roughly 3oz for 1 sandwich
2 slabs of meat = 6 oz and roughly $2 for one Sandwich
Ribeye at Publix $5.79 a lb Yes i know it on sale but...
Ground Beef $4 a lb typical price
Choice Sirloin runs around $6
I think the idea of them being cheap compared to what is available when you can use anything to replace it gets overlooked..Once cooked the amount of grease that comes out from them is alarming..
They’re still terrible. But they always have been
Great experiment.
Now that a great insight tip..completely understand the idea,.thanks Carl
Fuck mother nature

How do you order yours. Whats your secret
Plus I would rather have a chopped cheese or poor mans cheesesteak than these
Gary's available at the big warehouse stores is much different. It's also tastes the same as any chain philly place and is easy to cook.
I will look out for em, Thanks
Another great vid! Grew up with the Steak-ums, but haven't had them in 20+ years. Gonna have to give this a try. Thanks for bringing us another great griddle test!
Thanks for watching Brian...will be interesting to see your thoughts after so long
Just got a Blackstone for Christmas and this is the first thing I’m gonna cook on it. I love cheesesteaks and have not had a steak Um in probably 20 years.

Made this as my third cook. It was awesome and quick!
How did you like it..have you had legit ones...can you compare it to other ones
@@TheFlatTopKing I have never eaten anything but frozen. Every time I buy ribeye I end up grilling it. With cajun seasoning and garlic butter.
You know I really appreciate that comment...the ability to see both sides and have a fair and balanced response based on both feelings and truth...
@@Oddzilla51 well I really appreciate that perspective. It’s how I feel as well. Thanks bud.
But I remember them being more like actual sliced steaks piled up and not as processed, but I was a stupid kid at the time and didn't know any better.
ahhahaah seems like a ton of people have memories with these..I personally haven’t this was my first taste...thanks for commenting
I agree with you on the diced peppers and onion
Hey now there are two of us....Amazing how many people say how bad I am Because of diced vs sliced.....hahahahahaha
Put the cheese on the meat then put the bun on top? White American melts real fast.
yeah....
you have that cheesesteak action down
I use them with no problem. Not as good as a thin sliced ribeye but for convenience I like them. Just season them well and they can be tolerated. Good video.
Thanks Bud...
Back in the mid 70's my first wife ( New Jersey native) introduced me to Steak-umm. However, I have not made this on my Blackstone, yet. Is it possable for you place a link for the seasonings that you used?

I finally broke down last summer and did frozen beef patties. They were great. But what I liked mostly was I could quickly without forethought make burgers. I see this frozen meat video having the same benefit. It's another way of keeping your "pantry" stocked up. It doesn't have to be the best. But when you're jonesing for something it will save you from having to go to the grocery store for ingredients. And that's a good thing. Especially if you see frozen items on sale.
I appreciate your comment
I grew up with steakums as a regular meal in the rotation. When my wife and I got our flat top, she bought them and they were tasty but brought me back to those days of excruciating indigestion. Recently, our Wal Mart order subbed out the Great Value brand. To my surprise, it was SO much better. I just checked the label and the ingredients are more than just “beef”. Definitely update this video and try the Great Valu brand.
I think we could do that...
i keep steak ums in the freezer. walmart great value frozen ones too. they make great cheesesteaks, just get good bread. bread is like 80% of the game, and get some cooper sharp sliced cheese. Mix it in with fried onions, hit it with hot sauce as a condiment and side of cherry peppers you good

Have you ever took a sirloin roast and had it thinly sliced wonder if that would good
I have not had a roast but have used sirloin steaks I have taken home and thinly sliced
My honest opinion is this...it gets hard to eat because it stringy,. it pulls and not tears.
Good evening from Whistler MS. I prefer fresh but would use frozen in a pinch!!
Another style of frozen steak sandwich meat is called a "breakaway" steak, I used to find them at Sam's... they'd be similar to what you'll find in, say, a sports bar... it's literally like shaved steak formed in a cryovac package that you throw on the griddle and break it in to pieces. I'd say they fall firmly between these sheet-style steaks and fresh shaved meat... worth looking for & trying IMO
good to know....thank you
a lot of places in the tri-state area use frozen steaks.

Awesome let us know what you think
I used to buy these, but lately the refrigerated version of shaved, chopped steak is cheaper at Aldi's. Granted you need to use it in a few days, but if you're preparing it that night it doesn't matter. Having eaten all of those 3 brands you have for this video, I will say the quality of the roll has a bigger factor in taste and quality of the cheesesteak than which of those brands you use.
Yeah I can see that point...it all matters for sure
After watching the whole video, I agree fresh is better with a quality cut of meat. I’ve had a traditional Philly at Tony Luke’s as well. Wasn’t really impressed though. I personally prefer my homemade with steakums on a toasted bun. For your cheese on top try putting it in a metal sauce cup on the side and pouring it on. Good job brother.
Yeah not impressed by those as well...alot of hype for me to look at it and think...thats it...
Tony Luke’s is not good. They were at one time but have really gone downhill in probably the past 5-6 years.

Hey thanks so much for the support...

@@TheFlatTopKing yes! On the order of a chopped cheese I suppose but better. Didn't you make something like that or was it someone else? I have so many subscriptions that I can't remember. My apologies.
I appreciate that…..
The great value one is pretty good
Wow!!! Will definitely have to try this.
Absolutely...when you do let us know what you think
I love steak-ums. I’ll grill up some steak-ums with some peppers, onions, and mushrooms, then put them in an omelette, with lots of cheese!
Hey thats a great alternative...
