I just came back from a vacation in the Buffalo/Niagara area. A very nice city and area it indeed is! The Falls were AMAZING! And I really loved the Buffalo River History Tour! And the Naval ships were really cool too! I highly recommend anyone to visit this place!

I lived in Buffalo from birth until 2008, I now live in Las Vegas. Growing up, it's all I knew, blue collar town, two major auto factories, GM and Ford, Bethlehem Steel which closed down and remained an eye sore along the lakeshore for years because only part of the plant was still operating. I left because I was sick of high taxes, income tax, high gas prices, the winters, miserable people, and lack of development to make the city better. I mean, I was in high school when the Aud closed and they were talking about making it a Bass Pro Shop. Never happened, I graduated college and they were still talking about it, but nothing was being done, it just sat as an empty abandoned building. I move in 2008 and they demolish it shortly after and develop the harborcenter, and canalside. Great improvements so far. I've been back about twice since this time and the entire waterfront area is impressive with the grain elevators, Riverworks, paddleboats, ice skating on the "canals" downtown. How much fun is that!? The winters....everyone who lives in Buffalo will rave about the summers and how great they are, but all my life, the weather is cold until mid/end of June. Then you have warm weather up until about Labor Day and it's like someone turns the switch off and it's fall. Now, there are some times where you get a warm fall week but for the most part, winter is coming. Being an athlete all my life, my joints hurt in cold weather and I have trouble moving around, so I need warm weather. I also noticed growing up there and this could be just because of the time I was there....I lived a very sheltered life. People in the suburbs didn't associate with city kids, white kids hung out with white kids, blacks with blacks, and we never knew what being gay was. Everyone stayed in their area of town. Culturally, Buffalo sucked in the 80's and 90's. We had a couple Polish restaurants, but other than that, it was bar food, pizza, and italian. The best italian food in the 'burbs was Olive Garden or Buca Di Beppo. I came to Vegas saying things like I don't eat that, I don't hang out with people like that, that's weird, and people looked at me like I was strange. Buffalo never had the culture we needed to learn what it's like to be out in the real world. I told people I was homophobic because I didn't want my parents getting mad at me for hanging out with gay people. Things have definitely changed for me living in a bigger city, but it's comical watching social media and seeing my friends back home acting the same way I did before I moved....still today! It's quite sad actually. Everyone complains about the winters, it's so cold, first day of nice weather, OMG YAY everyone's happy, two weeks later, OMG IT's so hot, I need Air Conditioning. lol It's hysterical. I do love my hometown and the sports teams have my heart for life, but I wish the city would have improved a lot earlier as I think a lot more people like myself would have stayed. I'm proud of what Buffalo has done and hope they continue down that path.

Buffalo is a cousin of New York City in the state of New York, and they have Buffalo Bills for NFL, and Buffalo Sabres for NHL. New York City is much bigger than Buffalo and it is on the southeast corner of the state and it border with New Jersey and nearby Connecticut, and Buffalo is located on the northwest of New York which border Ontario in Canada. The distance from New York City to Buffalo is more than 400 miles.

clean but absolutely baron. I spent 2 hours walking around during the day-time and encountered maybe like 30 people. There are a ton of parking lots and they were all empty. All the bars and restaurants were empty... maybe I am just used to NYC where every place is crowded, no matter where and what time of day, but it still felt like a ghost town to me. When night rolled around I managed to find one area that became pretty lively; not sure what street this was but it's the one with the cable-car, right beside the theater with the huge 'Buffalo' sign. I had parked like 15 minutes by foot away from downtown, as I didn't want to pay $20 for parking. The area I parked in looked really rundown and kind of resembled Detroit or East Chicago. There was trash on the streets and the buildings looked kind of like projects. No one bothered me while I was there, but there was quite a bit of poor people roaming about. Idk if they were homeless or just on welfare, but they looked a bit disconcerting. The number of homeless people is nothing like the number in NYC or San Francisco, but during the day it feels like they are the only people you see.

      @t.g.3500 5 років тому

Sax and Phone Downtown isn’t where you want to hang in Buffalo as a visitor. As you now know, there’s not much there. The street you’re referring to is Main and that’s pretty dull. You want to visit Allen, Elmwood, and Hertel, which are all north of where you were.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Buffalo.
    Wegmans is great.
Plenty of theaters and museums to go to, Sheas gets super expensive but there are so many others.
6-7 month winters suck, November-April is the usual.
Great selection of higher education programs nearby, never had to worry about having to go away.
Very hard to find parking in the city, you’ll end up walking a few blocks.
Cost of living is very cheap.
Chicken wings and beef on weck are not as life changing as you’d think.
If you’re not into sports, the sports fans are exceedingly irritating. All anyone talks about is sports and they do so with great intensity.
Overall, the winters are so damn brutal that it is not worth it. We spend half our year digging out cars out of snow banks and it’s absolutely miserable, not to mention the summers get to be mid 90s which is pretty miserable too.

    • @damencurrie4490

I recommend staying away from Buffalo. It's got pretty architecture, sure... But nobody tells you it reeks of urine and the roads are liable to eat your car with their potholes. Plus, if you take one wrong turn, you may end up in the ghetto. That is no fun. My advice? If you wanna see a historical town that isn't dangerous, check out Lockport, NY or East Aurora, NY. Lockport is about 15 minutes north of Buffalo on the Erie Canal. You can still ride on the canal too, which is quite fun. East Aurora is 15 minutes south of the city and has some awesome architecture as well. I'd recommend the Roycroft Hotel and Millard Fillmore's house. (He was a US President in the mid 1800's.) They are much better options than Buffalo, and in the same general area.

Now we see cops beating people that look exactly like us. We will not go to Buffalo again. We will encourage everyone we know to also not go. As seniors we will spend our money and time somewhere where human life is respected and the police are not rogues and protected by antiquated laws, unions and politicians! All because of bad cops!

Jim Asimenios Hell, I have only been gone for 20 years. And I bet it was far worse than it was 50 years ago. Ugly, cold and boring. I cannot understand why anyone would voluntarily live in that garbage can.

The Truth I love when boring people claim that a place they lived was boring.
Totally, it’s the place and not just that you’re a loser.

@@t.g.3500 Loser? Is that why I make 200k a year? Have a multitude of vehicles to choose from? Have a house , while you live in mommy's basement? Ok. Whatever you say, fella. I have things and happiness that you could NEVER have in the garbage can known as Buffalo.
