- Another of the new 'Basic Skills' family of short videos, this one covers how to wire up a 12v accessory plug. These are becoming more & more popular given the increasing number of accessories we are 'plugging into' our cars these days.
Items like fridges, heated cups, fans, heaters, laptops & CB radios to list but a few.
This video covers which kind of accessory plugs are best to buy, how to wire them up and what to watch out for too...
Its an easy task but one that is often done poorly resulting in short circuits and ultimately blowing the fuse on the car's circuit.
Getting the wires the wrong way round can also cause serious damage to electronic components too...
These 'Basic Skills' videos are NOT meant to be a decisive, all encompassing, training video on teaching you all the various aspects of professional skills, no, not in the slightest!
Its a short video showing the basics giving you a starting point on how its done, the tools you need and a few tips along the way...

Thank you. This video was exactly what I needed. I have a tire (tyre downunder?) inflator pump on which the plug broke. I have had the thing forever and it works great. I didn't want to buy a new pump just wanted to change the plug. But the wire cable is all black and I didn't know how to tell positive from neg. Now I do, thanks to you.

Great video, but my cooler box does not have sleeved red and black coloured cables, just twin core cable. Any idea which one I should connect to the positive, fuse connection, on my Carpoint plug please?

Do you have a short video of a 12V cigarette plug? Also I need some advice, I want to install one in the rear of my. 91 Chevy Silverado/Suburban 5.7 LR 1 ton truck. In the rear of the vehicle somewhere useful but semi covert & out of the way uasable. Got any ideas?
How do you do fix the ones that you have to solder?
Can we use it for fog lamp installation? I want to connect fog lamp wires directly to the socket and plug and play whenever required. I won't void the car warranty too. Please help me if it can be used?

Good delivery but I wish you had covered an old style socket. Mine appears to have only one positive and I don't know if the neutral's going through the ground or what's going on? it's on a atv bayou Kawasaki. I imagine most people doing rewiring are seeking with old style of sockets thank you sir keep up your videos

I wish I saw this yesterday. I had tried to splice a 12V adaptor into the wiring at the rear of the socket. I assumed the marked cable was negative, but some genius decided to put indicators on the positive terminals wire. started the car and saw smoke so I ripped it out ASAP. The socket is fine but the adaptor was burned out
I want to do the opposite. I want to remove from plug and hook to switch. Do i just treat it like ground to ground and red wire power out

Hey Andy........great video ! Many thanks. I need your advice. I've set up a spraying rig for my tractor mower. The pump is 12 volts pulling 13 amps. Rather than connect up to an old car battery, I have the option of using an accessory plug on the mower as it's a built in option. My only concern would be the amps from the mower battery to the 12v lighter socket. Is there a standard rating that 's usually in place ? I don't want to carry out what you've shown in this video to find the wiring from battery to lighter socket isn't enough and it finally breaks.
Hi Dave, Thanks for the feedback. Yes, most accessory sockets are rated to 10 amps. You may be able to purchase a higher rated socket but you'd need to run heavier cables from the battery and don't forget to fit a fuse to the circuit too!

Thank you! Super simple, but the advice of a fuse, good idea! I live in my car, and boy does it get hot! So a fan is in order, but, homeless in a car, so it's gotta be cheapest possible. This could beat $10 which is like $4/$6 cheaper...

hello i need your advice i have installed rear view camera interface in my audi a6 i have connected red wire 12v to one of the fuse 5amp. its working but the problem when i turn on the head light in the night the device malfunction and if i switched off the head light its absolutely fine. please please tell me what i am missing. thanks
+Aamir Gondal Hmmmm....make sure the 12v feed from the 5 amp fuse remains once headlights are on. If not then source a permanent ignition live. Also make sure your earth wire is to ground rather than to what you think may be an earth as it may not be a permanent earth.

@andy mechanic can you please show me a video on how to wire a UK extension to a car battery. Attempting to build my own car washing trolly but my pressure washer has a UK plug. Please any advice. Hate running the hose through the house as I live in a terrace!!!
Sean, your pressure washer will be 240v AC, your car battery is 12v DC. You'd need an inverter to convert the output of the car battery to run the pressure washer. However, you would need a very large inverter as the washer will draw high amps plus it would discharge your car's battery very quickly
Basically it's just not a viable option.

Only just discovered this video. I’ve been looking at getting some small green light strips for my car but the wires it comes with have no connectors.
I’m looking to place them in the back side windows I’d my estate car, there is a 12v sock in the boot. Is this something I could do, connect the bare wires up to a 12v socket ?
Yes, be sure to get the polarity correct if they are LED lights. The centre pin is the positive.

Hi Andy, I’ve been powering a GPS on my motorcycle using a cable with a USB plug which is then plugged into a USB/Hella converter and then into the plug socket. To tidy things up I have tried to remove the USB plug from the cable and replace it with a Hella plug, like the one you’ve just demonstrated, and plug that directly into the socket. I’ve presumed that the centre pin is Positive and have used the red wire from the cable to attach to it. Sadly it’s not working. Do you have any helpful suggestions? Many thanks.
If you are using a USB adapter then it only gives out 5v DC. If you Eliminate this and just wire your GPS direct then you'll be supplying it 12v DC (and 14.5v DC when engine running). I think this may be an issue. Can you check on the GPS what the input voltage specs are.....

Great video ... I'm getting a compressor fridge and it comes with that cigar lighter fitting but I want to put it in the 12 volt fuse box of my camper ... I take it that's not a problem ????

Not sure if this is a dumb question but what is the limit of what you can ask of that cigarette lighter? Can't rewire a small electric heater or something like that can I?
10 amps is usually the maximum available on the cars socket.

K'leen Mary a small electric heater would draw too my h amperage, however, you can get an inverter to plug that into. Keep in mind, you will need to have the engine running or you will discharge you battery very fast.

Hi. I have convinced myself that I could top up a leisure 12v 6ah battery used for a diesel air heater using the cigar lighter while touring in my Citroen Jumpy van. Can someone confirm this please.

I use the same plugs as yours. What you forgot to mention that they are dual standard, if you leave the red gizmo off they are compatible with Hella DIN plugs used on trucks, motorbikes, quad bikes etc.

first of all, thank you for such a helpful and instructional video. I found in it right what I was looking for.
Now I have a doubt, because I am no expert in electronics (especially electrical components): I just bought a phone mount for my motorcycle, which carries a 5v 2A rated USB plug and a positive and a negative cable. I was planning to wire those cables to a cigarette socket (just like you did on your video), and I was wondering if I should get a fused socket, since my bike's plug is 12v 2A rated, or a normal one would do it (or even if a 12v cigarette socket can plug a 5v USB plug!).
Sorry about all of that, I'm just really confused when it comes to electronics 😅

IF it helps, MY rule of thumb, for 2 wire DC application(s), is the 'fused' (center in this case) is used as positive (+), but.
IF you cut a pair or wires, mark / tag them, beforehand.
I always 'attempt' to remember to cut my wires.. 'opposite' lengths.
Helps me to remember to pair them, correctly. PLUS, often makes connections easier (my experience), UNLESS the wires are VERY SHORT.
Short (STRIPPED) w/ long (STRIPPED) vice versa, when crimping / soldering, connections. Just my method.
IF, you have 'limited' space to 'jam' the wires back into something, like a small fuse panel this too.. may OR may NOT be helpful.. when 'folding' the wires into the box.

Why wouldn u just use an anderson plug ?? These vibrate in the socket and most often then not . Your appliance gets a bad connection and turns off
These sockets only carry up to 10 amps usually. I agree, some of the plugs are a poor fit but an Anderson plug/socket would be massive overkill as an accessory outlet on your dash board for most applications. I'm sure there are better alternatives available.

I've got a tyre pump with 2 black wires, one of which is ribbed. Do you know which is the positive? I've looked online and found conflicting answers.

+Michael B The plug goes on the accessory (work lamp, fridge etc) the power feed 12+ is the centre pin of the socket....usually mounted on the dash of the car - traditionally known as the cigarette lighter socket.

Unfortunately I wired an accessory socket up. Didn't realise wires matters (as in a 2 core light bulb). I connected positive to the negative terminal. Not only did a number of devices I tried not work but they did not work but when I discovered my error and fixed the wires. All my devices I tried to work seem to have burned out or something as they would not work on. When plugged in to electricity now in the house they do not with that either. Sometimes an led light can be seen but the device won't work anymore. Puzzled! Please help! Devices now not working, 3 of the items for charging phones. A portable DVD player, a set of speakers. An adapter that had 3 accessory socket and two USB ports. All gone!
Damn. It's critical you get the polarity correct when wiring up these accessory plugs/sockets. The items you list have been permanently damaged as a result & will require replacement unfortunately.
Best to double check next time.

Hi just trying wire up a horse float to the seven pin plug off back car to float; is there a live wire to hock into that’s nothing do brakes etc , can’t seen find one regards Bill
+Bill Edminstin on trailer red=brakes, brown=tail lights, white=ground, yellow & green=indicators (can't remember which is left &right) sorry. Car wiring could be anything you'll need a multimeter to work it out...or a test light. Hope this helps. Cheers Andy

+Bill Edminstin there is no permanent live to the rear unfortunately. You'll have to run a separate feed direct from the car battery. You can get accessory plugs for caravans so the fridge etc can be powered whilst driving etc.

Re the neon, you need to learn about it yourself from the sounds of it, the neon bridges the + & - inside the plug so why doesn't it cause a short?

Hi, you need a transformer to convert the AC voltage into DC 12v. Look on Amazon, they are pretty cheap. You cannot wire it direct to household wiring, this would not work and would be extremely dangerous. Stay safe Andy

@@AndyMechanic So sad that this system has become established. These sockets were designed over 70 years ago for stupid people who wanted to light up in their car. Now that they have been killed off with their addiction it's a shame that it can't be changed. USB sockets are now fitted in cars but I think they are only low powered.

If they did change there could be a big market for adapter plugs form cig lighter to 12v socket. Agricultural tractors have a 3 pin socket that powers control systems for balers, harvesters and all kinds of machinery. The 3rd pin is something to do with the starter contact. It would be too much to expect this standard to be adopted, they would probably all design their own hideous abortions with limited use.
