How to Install a Freestanding Tub

  • In this video, home renovation brothers Dave and Rich show you how to install a freestanding tub. We also include how to install a freestanding tub faucet - also known as a tub filler. Before the task of mounting the freestanding tub can begin, the tub faucet must be installed as it is typically installed between the tub and wall.
    To install freestanding tub, complete the following steps.
    1. locate or install plumbing supply lines and drain “y” connection
    2. Install the tub filler and connect to the supply lines before finishing the floor.
    3. finish flooring leaving an open cavity over which the freestanding tub will be placed.
    4. connect the tub drain to the drain lines.
    5. test for leaks
    6. apply silicone to the tub base and / or tub feet
    7. place the tub and allow silicone to dry.
    The freestanding tub or its cousin, the slipper tub, add visual impact to what otherwise is a functional space. If you are looking to upgrade your master bathroom, installing a freestanding tub can go a long way toward making that happen.
    That's it, hope this helps!

      Building Code says in R308.4.5 that windows within 5 feet of a shower or tub need to be tempered glass unless that window is also 5 feet above the floor. So just adding a bathtub in front of a window might technically be illegal unless the window is tempered, which it often isn't if this is a new tub location.

      @@dennismiller9681 Including that light fixture, that too is illegal. Article 410 of the National Electrical Code covers luminaires (lights) suspended from the ceiling by cords, rods or chains, including chandeliers. They must be at least 8 feet above the top of the rim of the tub. A chandelier that is lower than 8 feet must be at least 3 feet away from the tub side. The chandelier must be designed for use in damp locations, or, if there’s a chance it will get wet from spray, it must be designed for use in wet locations. Thanks for the helpful video. I think you should have done the rough plumbing yourself too :-) The way the plumber put the wye in necessitated adding fittings going uphill to meet the outlet of the trap. That won't meet code; it created an "S" trap.

    Our bathroom has been on hold for the last few months. This was one of our setbacks. The drain setup we have, is just not working. The flexible hose seems so much easier! And putting wood under to check for leaks, thats great! Its an upstairs bathroom, i dont want a flood! I sent this to my husband to see if this is something we can do so we can finally finish this project! It looks simple enough, and our work space looks like enough. Crossing my fingers that this works!

      Hey Laura,
      Just fyi, all the plumbers HATE this as it is not to code. Yet the tub manufacturer sent that flexible hose. So it seems like manufacturers and plumbers don’t communicate.
      We will be doing another one of these this spring and will use a different setup - hopefully the plumbers will approve!😃

    Thanks for the video, beautiful tub and faucet. Btw, different tubs come with different connections. Mine came with a very cheap flex tube that the first second I saw it I knew I can not use it. Beside, I think water should drain more directly as possible. As for the faucet, I banged my head on the waterline valves for a long time. I see the way you did it, nothing wrong with that but if someone needs to change the faucet they will need to flip the tub. I placed mine within the same hole under the faucet. Hard to get to but doable with a 3-inch hole. After all done, looking back I wouldn't have valves for the faucet, because if someone need to change the faucet once in a blue-moon they can shut the main water line.

    Those accordion style drain pipes will clog / smell much quicker than the standard slick walled due to ribs, but it depends on the environment. It's good that's not a very heavy kind you have there so you can inspect it and work on it more easily.

      Our tub filler only had and inch or so room around it. If a repair is needed, the tub would have to moved anyway - so make it as close as you’d like to make it look and function right.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Рік тому

      Hey Sierra,
      Glad you liked it!
      We got a replacement from the manufacturer.
      The big problem is - they don’t fit well w/ existing plumbing. If the tub is manufactured in a different country it’s possible, if not likely, that they are in no way familiar with our plumbing code or sizing and won’t fit well or at all. So we had to “make it work” through modification. It now works fine but was a bit of a hassle.
      We are getting ready to install a new free standing tub at another house where the drain assembly ( a free standing tub rough in kit ) is MUCH different and avoids the hassles that come with flex pipe which isn’t code in the USA.
      So keep an eye of fit that video.

    Nice; been considering one of these, but concerned about tight space in the back side might be too tight of a squeeze to reach by hand for cleaning. Even if I can reach back there, can you see what you’re doing or is it by feel/trust your arm is reaching the dirty spots? Did you make a follow-up vid for cleaning the back side? Traditional tubs has only front side so this feels like twice the work to clean, just curious. Thx

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  3 роки тому +1

      Hey patimuse,
      Because the tub filler / faucet is behind the tub, there really seems to be plenty of room to get back there. And as the tub is curved, you can see quite easily along the back side of the tub. Maybe a little more work than a regular tub, but they really add to the look of the room. Trade-offs I guess. Thx for watching!

      Hey Growler...,
      There is a ring surrounding the shaft of the tub filler/faucet that is about an inch deep. So that becomes the clearance issue. You may also need to check the under-floor structure as that may have something to say about running plumbing to your perfect spot. Short answer in our case - an inch or two.

    Installing my soaker tub tomorrow. I wont have any plumbing issues because its a garage under the bathroom and all the ceiling drywall was removed for full access to everything. I was wondering... when you test fitted with the 2 pieces of wood and videod with your phone, the flexible hose goes down from the bath drain hole then up quite a bit then down to the P trap. Does that part of the flexible going up cause a problem or just acts like a first p trap?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Eric,
      Ideally, that’s not the best way. But we did what we could. If it forms an “s-trap” you could run into issues. These days they make better ways to connect - search “ free standing tub drain connect “. It’s like a coupling device. Much better than flexible house. But you still will use a p-trap.
      Hope it goes well!

The silicone was applied to the legs under the bathtub but the border of the bathtub does not touch the floor and it has no silicone. Is this a big problem or will it hold nicely? Hope you can help. Thanks in advanced.

      @Housebarons  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Mariel,
      We’ve never had that particular issue.
      But one thing is true: Tubs get pretty heavy with water in them. With the silicone caulk or some rubberized pad at the feet, that would seem to offer more resistance to slipping.
      All you can do is try and see what happens. Hopefully it stays in place.
      Thx for watching,

    • @xungngo
      @xungngo Рік тому

      Just a feedback: I don't think having all the 'legs' propping up the tub looks good. Flat on the floor looks a lot better. Just use the legs to account for leveling only. IOW, you probably only need one or two legs to level it, the rest should be flat. Then you add a little more caulk/silicone for that space. Not only under the tub but also around it to finish off. It will be super tight and look nice.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Рік тому

      Hey Elsa,
      Not sure if your tub has adjustable “legs” (typically used for getting it level) or if the spray foam expanded and lifted the tub.
      Minimum - the gap should be covered. Or the tub gets lowered. The gap isn’t normal on a freestanding tub.
      Hope that helps.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  2 роки тому

      Hey AMJolene,
      You could simply place some small pieces of wood under the leg/ foot that isn’t touching the floor. The big box home stores sell packs of wood door & window shims which are made of view thin wood. The could be cut smaller and used without being too obvious.
      Or, maybe try some clear silicone in a tube squirted under the leg/ foot. Let it dry fully before using the tub. Once dry it will fill that gap and make the tub more stable.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Suzanne,
      The main concern is your drain for the water and supply for the hot and cold water.
      Somehow you need to know where you main bathroom drain runs. You’ll have to connect to that and that can be anywhere in the floor or walls leading to the floor below if upstairs.
      No - Workman don’t have to do it if you want to learn and do.
      In our case we had a plumber run the drain before we tiled the floor. We ran the supply because we re-plumbed the whole house.
      It could be expensive, but I guess all that is relative to your circumstance.

    Hi HouseBarons, thanks for the video. I'm planning to install a similar-appearing tub filler from American Standard. My question is what gap did you provide from your filler vertical pipe to the outer edge of the tub? And how much overhang into the tub did that produce on the filler neck? Are you getting any water not going into the tub? Thanks. This is one fact that isn't well explained in any instruction, so your experience would be helpful.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Keith,
      The verticle pipe is only about one inch from the outside of the tub. The neck is able to swivel out of the way, so interference when getting in the tub is no issue. In the end, it depends on preference and function. There is leeway.
