Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Happy new year when it comes Bruce 🍻. Thanks very much for all your excellent videos in 2024 and I look forward to many more in 2025.
😘
Another great wee film of Scottish history 👍
So much information packed into 12 minutes. Whatever you may think of the man, he had amazing fortune!
Happy Hogmanay Bruce! Thanks for another great story unfortunately I had a busy morning so I'm late getting to watch, but I'm enjoying it just the same. 💙🏴
😘
Hope you had a great Christmas and have a happy Hogmanay/New Year too mate!😊
What's not to like? 🥳
When I was a young girl in Edinburgh, the children would sing a song, " the Campbells are coming, I ken by the smell". Scots have long memories.
I remember it well
I think that "The Campbells Are Coming" was written about a different event. The Battle of Altimarlach, 1672.The last battle between clans in Scotland between Sinclairs and Campbells over rights to estates in Caithness. The Sinclairs got drunk on whisky the night before and lost the battle and the estate which was returned after a legal case. Some people think the loss of the battle and estate is why there are/were Sinclairs in Argyll around Inveraray and Glenorchy.
It's a lesson in not taking strong drink when about to have a battle especially with the Campbells. 😮
I’ve read the troops weren’t campbells…another Jacobite lie ….

Happy New Year Bruce! And Thank You! Such a breathtaking place.
Another fantastic lesson. I personally love this little spot you patron when you’re telling tales from that part of your beautiful country. Thank you, Mr Bruce! Happy New Year.
Are u married
A'reyt Bruce. Such a sad tale from such a beautiful location, as I commented before. Enjoy those chips. Have a Happy New Year or Hogmanay to you and anyone reading this.
😜
Hogmanay is 31 December, so you should have separate congratulations for Hogmanay and New Year which are on consecutive days! Our way of saying it, is Happy New Year, when it comes.
@@DenisShields I was used to starting celebrations for New Year on New Years Eve and it all melting into one somewhere in the pub crawl, so had never really thought of this as separate. One year two of us ended up for a drink at another pals new flat. He had a new bottle of whisky and said we should help ourselves to a drink. We woke him up, handed the drop we left him in the bottle back and wished him good morning before heading off for breakfast, assuring him we had enjoyed his most generous offer.
@ that is an appropriate response. Joining in I call it. That approach is very welcome in Scotland. We like people who say it like it is and do things the same way! While I accurately separated Hogmanay and New Years Day, I was merely correcting the initial comment that confused them. You, on the other hand, seem to understand that one bleeds seamlessly into the other.
Blessed Happy New Years Bruce family / crew + family.
Thanks for sharing 👍 and Happy New Year to you and your family 😊
Thanks!
Thanks so much
Merry Christmas mate!
...and a Happy new year
Very informative, thanks Bruce, happy new year

Happy new year from South Africa Bruce! Please come visit some time!
We're not quite there yet😜
Bruce that is one longest pints I have ever seen. Lol, I know this vid is in parts. Huggies Fummeys' and Crew too!!
Thanks for that story Bruce I was aware that Glencoe and the Act Of Union were down to the same man and both involved a lot of dirty work at the cross roads.
I'll watch the other video now👍
Thanks. I'm currently sitting writing one that will come later in the series. I hope you like conspiracy theories
Not related to this as such, but here in Finland, I just watched "The Lost King" on telly. A familiar face in it. ✊️ Good film.

I think that second statement means Dalrymple presented well...that he appeared at first to be exactly what he wasn't.
(He'd have fared splendidly as a politician now...)
Indeed
Of course you are perfectly correct. Bruce was just misrepresenting his own understanding purely so as not to alienate those not so quick on the uptake.

Love my my country. Love my history.
Worked in Glencoe on the land, spoke to some of older generations that have been in that Glen for 100s of years.
One thing I was shocked by. There was work getting done where I stayed, out on Rannoch... and as the 14ton digger took a good bucket full... up came an old Field Plow with it.
The old Bothy (renewed) for me moving into... had a musket ball found 4ft away from the front door.
Love Scotland, absolutely LOVE IT ❤❤🏴🏴🏴

Merry Christmas Bruce, and a very happy Hogmanay - May yer lum reek
Extirpate is a word rarely used today but I was surprised you stated it meant a stern ticking off or somesuch. It means exterminate, deracinate, kill off. James I and VI used it when he asked the Marquis of Huntly to deal with the ‘barbarous, people of the Hebrides.
Ah Sir, if you watch again with a ready wit and sense of humour it will all make sense.😎
I can always tell when you 're going to talk about something serious Bruce. Your voice goes so low that I actually have to turn up the volume on my computer! Once I put my earpods in, what you said definitely caught my attention. The Massacre of Glencoe is something that is taught worldwide. Even my Japanese friends knew about it well when we talked history the first time! It stands as one of the most vile things that a man could do to sully other men and wipe out an entire family. Yet, as popular as the history is, we've still learned nothing from it over three hundred years later, something that you drive home with this video. When it ended, the first thing that popped into my head were the last lines of a John McCutcheon song:
That the ones who call the shots won't be among the dead and lame,
And on each end of the rifle, we're the same.
I've been a history student all of my life and didn't know about the facts you talk about here. I believe if we finally learn this lesson, it would be the best slap in the face that we could give to folks like Dalrymple! I hope we learn it one day.
On a brighter note, I hope that you and yours have a grand Hogmanay! Many wishes for happiness and health in 2025! 😊
Voice goes down low... Massacre of Glencoe... voice comes up Happy Holidays 🥳

Another great video, Bruce. I've known about John Dalrymple's involvement in the Glencoe massacres but not the depth of his treachery. As the late Hunter S. Thompson, one of America's funniest political writers wrote, "The scum also rises".
Happy Hogmanay to you and your family! 🎉
😜Aye turer today than at any time
I do believe they were saying he may have passed for human. Although he was hardly human at all.
Greetings esteemed colleague, "One cannot help but ponder the veracity of prima noctis, ostensibly imposed upon the Scottish populace, and wonder whether this notion is rooted in historical fact or merely a product of cinematic embellishment."
"Does prima noctis constitute an authentic historical artifact or a fabrication born of cinematic license?"
That looks a very fine beer
Don't forget the Darién-project, the failed scottish colony in Panama in 1699. Many families had invested hugh amounts of money in this project and faced bankruptcy afterwards. So Queen Anne saw the opportunity to end the scottish independency by offering the scots to pay all obligations from the Darién-project if Scotland would became a part of the United Kingdom. Many common people in Scotland were against this treaty but, as often, money controlled politics and also politicians such as John Dalrymple.
Don't worry I didn't forget about Darien
Tell me if you'd hear this before......."An aging American starts to learn about his ancestry that finds itself in Scotland, and Northern England"....haha!! Yep, that is my story too, excuse the pun. Mr. Fummey, I absolutely love your videos sir! I wonder, seeing you sitting at that pub, if you would talk this way to a visiting American? What if my mother was a Campbell, which she is. This is a serious question that I have been curious about how it would play out. IF, I were lucky enough to be able to book a visit to Scotland, would it be best if kept my mouth shut? I would think so. Many years ago I moved to the southern part of the US, as I am from Ohio. To this day, the southerners are still upset about the damn yankees, and it was in my best interest to watch and learn, and to keep my mouth shut.
In my experience it's only North Americans who bear this grudge towars Campbells. Go figure
Seems that large bags of cash always caused more in trouble than the said bag of cash was actually worth.
True
My wife, who had MacDonalds in her family had a friend who was a Campbell. they used to laugh about how they were supposed to be enemies. Later I worked with a Campbell from a family not locally known for their neighborliness. Ya, they were all a bunch of ...
thank goodness we dont live back then

Another brilliant telling of a piece of history that us Southerners know the bare skeleton of the affair, but none of the details. Thanks
Thank YOU for following
“mastermind” - weird word choice.
I disagree
@ In my opinion, the word "mastermind" has a positive connotation which is not merited for someone who sought to "extirpate that bunch of thieves".
