Hi Bruce...I'm always amazed about the telling of the Glencoe massacre that its rarely if ever mentioned about the massive massacre of some 1200 plus men women and children by the McDonald's and other clans. This i believe happened about 20 years earlier and its frequently and conviently ignored?...both obviously not right but 1200 plus souls slaughtered verses i think about 38 souls. The link is there between the two massacres...it would be good and interesting to redress the telling with some facts showing the two incidents in comparison and the chronological connection.
Your all mixed up it was the campbells that did the slaughtering they fought with Cromwell and William off orange and George the hanoverian German king and his butcher son the Duke off Cumberland traitors to scotland and scotlands shame
As someone who comes from MacDonalds on both sides of my family, the massacre at Glencoe is particularly close to my heart. Thank you for covering the details so thoroughly Bruce. Appreciated!
MacIain is something like my 10th Great Grandfather we are descended from his surviving son John of Glencoe.... but you've got to remember that these families were all related to each other.. Robert Campbell of Glenlyon was related to MacIain of Glencoe through marriage. Aye Bruce, it's the old Intensive Care doctor in me that is piqued by this yarn. Anyone who has fractured their clavicle will tell yer, it is painful and takes many months to heal. I suspect the dear king probably had also fractured his upper ribs, a terrible injury that would kill many a young man in those days and a few older ones these days. I do hope the sweet man did not suffer too greatly. No, I do! Honest!
Let's hope you are not actually doctor, sneering at the suffering of others like that. William III was the first constitutional monarch, and held by people far brighter than you to have been our finest King.
Bruce, you should have mentioned that, after a wee skirmish in Ireland, Wullie also came out with a line of merchandise…..from big sheets on sticks, tae tea towels and polo shirts. He was a complete canute, but had a great marketing department….
For an excellent book on the subject, John Preebles "Massacre at Glencoe". Still in print. Also his whole catalogue of books dealing with Scottish is outstanding. I encourage anyone with an interest in History, to collect his books.
It has always struck me as very strange that Scotland went for union with England after Darien. I guess bribing MPs was even more rampant then than now as was being economical with the truth.
The Alien Act, confiscation of land owned by Scots in England, along with an implied threat of invasion from English forces just over the border and in Ireland, didn't help either.
The reason you find it strange is because you've taken Scottish lies as the truth. I admit the Scots aren't on the same level as the Irish & welsh when it comes to bullshit, but they do like to distort the truth. The portrayal of England vs Scotland only came about 20 or so years before the union, as before that, the Scots hated each other far more than the English. England or the rulers of England had no interest in Scotland or Ireland, they were only interested in stability, the only real invasions was by the church, any other conflict was in response of aggression. There's a reason they built 3 great walls to keep the Scots out(not that they worked)
@@chrissearle6176having lived in England for a number of years I can say without fear of contradiction as far as bullshite goes the English are hard to beat. I say that as someone who lived in France for nearly a decade and they have their own version of the truth on most things

No, nobody has ever been a monarch of Great Britain. The concept came in with the Union of Crowns in 1603 and James was VI of Scotland and I of England, Similarly his grandson James VII and II. The argument you put would be better made for the United Kingdom, but that wasn't till 1707 after William's death

And why do you think they asked King William in the first place, he had the Royal Stuart connections , his mother was Princess Mary, daughter of Charles 1 and he married his cousin Mary Stuart , daughter of James V11.
